Same on my 22 Performance…. 15k miles with tons of chips from snow runs (pebbles) and scratches based on Teslas uber cheap paint. Never thought I would have a nearly $80k daily but thats life. Here in CA they wanted $5-8k for full PPF so I said no.

They are not as expensive as PPF and they actually protect the area direct behind the tires where most stones hit the car. So Mudflaps Jep👍 PPF no 👎

I did get ppf and it has stopped a fair number of bumper and bonnet chips as the ppf does show the impact mark. The one big positive for me is the way it stops washing swirls and scratches and makes keeping my midnight silver colour looking amazing. My 3 has done 10k in 17 months in the hardness of the Scottish weather.

We had a White 2021 Model Y purchased in Jan 2021 that we put 18K miles and did not do PPF. The front bumper as you pointed out just takes abuse with a Tesla compared to other cars. The Y is our roadtrip car and we had quite a few paint chips on the front end especially on the bumper. The paint chips show up as black under the white paint so definitely noticeable. We sold that car a few weeks ago (for $12K higher than we purchased new!) with the arrival of our new 2022 Model Y Performance - also white. The MYP came with PPF on the rear door panels at delivery which is nice. I decided to put PPF on the front bumper and front mirrors from the detail shop I use for a total of $850. To do the full front would have ran another $1000 and would be nice, but decided not to go there. $850 seemed smart given the abuse that bumper takes on Tesla's. I then had the car ceramic coated to make protect the paint from sun/stains and make cleaning a breeze. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here but this is what I decided to do after owning one for a decent time and then purchasing a new one.

I have the same midnight silver. I'm convinced I'm going to get it at least on the front and the mirrors. I think the other thing to note is I believe the rep is a much more premium paint with more coats or something like that. So the midnight silver may be a much softer paint. Most people in the forums say it's not necessary to get PPF but I still feel as though some is better than none. For me, yes it's just a car but I kinda want to protect want to protect the overall look as best I can. I not thinking it's going to stay pristine looking forever but also don't want 2 years down the road for it to look like a 5 year old car either.

Great video! However, we have a similar story, but made a different choice ... so here's a consideration for any of your viewers to think about: We got our Model Y in October of 2020 and I decided early on I wanted to protect the front of the car - so I took it to a highly recommended shop to get PPF put on the front of the car and they highly recommended that we also put a ceramic coating over the PPF and they had another shop that specialized in properly applying ceramic coating ... so why do this? Because applying ceramic coating over the PPF offers better protection from the sun ... UV rays can cause PPF to slowly degrade overtime and this can cause cracking, yellowing, and peeling. So, by applying ceramic coating over your PPF, you can prolong its lifespan ... and this is exactly what we did - and today, after 2 years, the car looks virtually the same as it did on day one! Was it worth spending about $2500 to have the entire front of the car protected, including the hood and side mirrors? On our $60K investment (we got both FSD for $8K and performance boost for $2K on our long-range Model Y at the time), it was totally worth it! Nobody believes our car now has almost 40K miles on it and looks virtually brand new ... also, I totally hate dirty cars ... and another huge plus is that it is SO easy to clean the front of the car - especially splatted bugs in the bumper area - those bugs splats just slide right off with a damp sponge or cloth with essentially no effort ... on a long road trip, I have a small bucket and a gallon of water sitting in the back trunk storage area - and while the car is charging, I can easily clean off the front of the car in less than 2 minutes - so when we arrive at our destination, the car STILL looks like I just drove it out of the showroom ... but that's just me and my 2 cents ...

Thanks for your review. 1st time seeing one of your videos. Absolutely right it’s a personal choice. I have a 2022 model 3 LR. I went with the full body ppf in matte white and LOVE, love love it. Looks great! Sure it was $5500 to get it done and that’s a lot of dough. I’m in Minnesota and we have a lot of sand and salt in the winter time. Also I am planning on keeping it for a long time. If that’s what a car is like after 2 years and 35k miles it’s safe to say the amount of chips, dings and scratches will be double after 4 years and 70k miles. My other car is a 2011 and the front end and along the side runners is just beat up from road debris. I have zero regrets getting it done

I think the dilemma whether to or not is applicable to a lot of car owners. I picked up my Genesis GV60 premium RWD (North East, England, UK) in June 2022 and while it was on order wrestled with the idea of paying the several thousand required for PPF or ceramic coating. I decided against it after a thorough inspection of my departing car and the damage or lack of it suffered in 5 years and 30K miles. I have a good hand wash regime multiple buckets and leaf blower drying and microfibre glove washing and drying in straight lines in one direction only. After 4 months and several summer road trips it is still looking great. Alas the black plastic exterior trim around the A, B and C pillars and the Spoiler seem impossible to clean and not scratch which is a little upsetting. As winter approaches though I wonder how much of a battering the front will take from road salt/grit and have found myself contemplating PPF again. The GV60 being rear wheel drive is less prone to chips on the rear flanks as no power to spin the front wheels when accelerating however it won’t stop other cars I’m driving behind throwing road debris! Great video. Thanks. My deliberation continues😂

I've had the same conundrum here since we brought home our used 2022 Model 3 RWD. Because of it only having 8k miles when we bought it a few months ago, it's relatively undamaged and the red color is amazing in the sun. That being said, I've gone back and forth on investing in PPF for the front end, hood and mirror caps. I also wash it by hand and while that's a good thing to prevent automated car wash damage, it gets a guy up close and personal to new and as yet undiscovered road damage from driving the car. I'm seeing tiny flecks, dings, chips and overall damage every time I wash this car. I'm in the same boat as you in the end tho. As much as I absolutely love this EV, in the end it's really just a car. Something to use and enjoy daily and that's what we're gonna do. Care for it as best as we can but just use and enjoy it. Now, if I were seeking maximum resale value and looking forward to selling the car soon/looked at the car more as an investment, my perspective would have been the opposite. We wouldn't be daily driving it, it'd have PPF and stay in the garage. We're not doing that so it is what it is at this point. Great video and it really helps to see something I was thinking about quite a bit in video form and made as well as you made it. Thank you...

I had a 3M PPF clear "bra" installed on my two-week old VW ID.4. It covers the front bumper area, headlights, paintwork around the headlights, front 1/3 of the hood and front of the side mirrors. The cost was $1160. It would probably have prevented a lot of the small marks you showed on your Model Y, but the larger scratch nearer to the windshield and the large mark on the lower front bumper wouldn't have been prevented. For me, even if it just avoids lots of the smaller marks and prevents the headlights from getting frosted and yellowed it's probably worth it. But at the end of the day, PPF is plastic and there are definite limits to its ability to protect your paintwork.

Great informative video. I had 2 model Y's. I originally bought a 2020 model y long range, which I put PPF on the front end, side view mirrors, the rear passenger doors and rear panels by the rear doors, where rock chips usually occurs. I sold the car in August of 2021 for 12,600 more than I paid, because the car was very clean. I bought the model y performance in October 2021 and did the exact same thing. The cleaning of the car is so easy with the ppf, it's ridiculous. The areas that I don't have ppf, I ceramic coated it, including my windows and rims. After I wash it I just use a leaf blower to dry it up to 90 percent than I just used a dry towel to finalize it. It saves so much time and bugs and dirt don't stick to the cars. It's an investment to protect my paint. If the ppf scratches, it heals in the sun, where the wrap doesn't. Now you can get ppf in various colors. Enjoy your new Y.

Everyone sold their barely used cars for way more money in 2021. In fact I bought 5 cars in 2021/22 because of the market and shopped to only pay MSRP and never lost money because of trade values higher than new cars. So I don’t attribute your $12K more solely because of the PPF but it prevented the dealer or buyer from using a tactic to not pay you KBB value.

Agree with you on bug gut problem. With PPF, I’ll wipe off with waterless cleaner and it’s good as new. Price-wise, shop around, PPF costs vary wildly

I was really conflicted on getting a PPF at first. It’s so expensive and also requires some maintenance. But bec my car is a gift from my grandpa, i just went for it so I can keep it protected. It’s a brand new ford everest and there’s so much sentimental value to it. So i went for it.

We found this video very informative. having now done about 300 miles in our white model 3 and are considering ppf treatment. About half our mileage in the course of a year is on Motorways where damage from debris is most likely to occur. We have Tesla supplied mud flaps all round but having received the cost estimate, as we were considering a full wrap, it is probably not cost effectine in terms of damage limitation. Having watched the video we will probably only have the most vulnerable areas ppf treated.

I PPF'd and ceramic coated my 2022 White Model 3 LR immediately after pickup. 2 years on it still looks like showroom new. I only did the front facing panels, and it only cost CAD$3000 including the paint correction, side and back window tint and XPEL 7mm PPF by a certified installer, with a bit of a discount from my Tesla Owner's Club as they are a sponsor of the club. My wife picked up her red Model Y dec 29 and it already has two rock chips on the hood. I think it's a lot of painted surfaces to not protect... especially driving in Canadian winters. I am VERY picky, hand wash only and like it to look new for as long as possible. Now I have to wait for the warmer weather to try to use the paint repair kit, but it will never be perfect again. I will then have it ceramic coated, as it really helps when it comes to cleaning the car... so much easier with ceramic coat applied. She's ok with it though as 'its just a car' to her, so as you say, to each their own. For what its worth, i think repairing the paint on the red car will be easier than the pearlescent white as the paint repair kit even says it cannot replicate the exact look of that pearlescent white.

You Sir, did very well in explaining the utilitarian aspect of an automobile. Unlike a home renovation/upgrade that many improve the value of your asset, spending $5K+ on paint protection is not an investment. That said, there could be a happy medium to protect only the front if possible, at a reasonable cost.

Then I bought a new metaloc blue 2022 MYP that went straight to Tint Pros here in Minnesota to get the STEK Prisamtic PPF all over the body for $7K. Now it has $7K with *no* paint chips. I think that where you live and what kind of driving you do is the main factor in getting ppf or not. Every car I've ever driven had rock chips in the hood.

A car is a tool to get from point A to point B. Wear and tear is inevitable. After paying $58K for a Y, I wouldn’t spend $5-$10K additional for some superficial protection. Consider the money spent on the car purchase a sunk cost and invest the money instead. Maybe the money invested could recoup the car purchase price.

@justwatchingdoom
@justwatchingdoom Ай бұрын
Depends where you live is my opinion. Arizona freeways are unearthing and half the vehicles on the road are lifted trucks. No mud flaps anywhere. Several windshields have been lost to airborne particles and the front is shredded in no time. New vehicles get them but there’s no point if a used vehicle has lost its perfect finish. Also, how long do you plan to keep? It can look new for a long time if you take care of it. However if you go to sell it 5 years later, you aren’t getting any money back for appearance as normal road wear is already considered. I’ve gotten several done for the $1K range. Maybe consider going to a high volume installer on a trip to have it done over local if it is that expensive. Will it stop everything? No but it’s far better than taking the impacts if you are keen to blemishes and plan on keeping the car for 10 years.
