Foot orthotics are used to take stress off of tissue that is injured or painful. Sometimes this tissue is under stress because a foot has structure or function that always puts a certain tendon, ligament, bone or other structure under stress. This person might need to always wear foot orthotics to be pain free and avoid injury.
Other times, however, an injury occurs due to a training error - usually doing too much too soon without proper strengthening. Those people may use the orthotics to take force off the tissue so it can heal, but once it is healed and after proper strengthening they may very well find that they no longer need orthotics.
