What are the benefits of driving a big van and 12 tonne truck? We look at why you shouldn't buy a 7.5-tonner.

As others have said, the 7.5t is way better than the van for urban multi-drop as you can turn them on a sixpence where the big van turns like an ocean liner. Also, you're sitting high enough in the cab to see over the top of parked cars which makes pulling out from side roads much easier. Add to that air brakes and the fact that other road users are much more likely to treat you well, as you're in a truck and you have no contest.

The 7.2 Iveco with the Hi-Matic gearbox is a bit of a nightmare. Sure it is nice to have an auto in London, but show this gearbox a downhill gradient, and it drops to the lowest gear ratio available and screams its nuts off. It also holds on to gears far too long when accelerating.

That 7.2 Iveco is a nightmare to drive in London, no turning circle & to many blind spots 7.5 daff is far superior

This is interesting to me, I spend 5 days a week doing collections in a 3.5t LoLoader. 3 days in this week I weighed myself at 3600kg without me in it! So 2 days work down the pan while I drive back and unload. Work are paying for my class 2, but I do a lot of city centre multidrop collections so 7.5t is much less clumsy than our Merc 18t. I had my heart set on an iveco van, but I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise by other drivers!

I drive an 18t truck but quite often have to take a 7.5 into the City Centre of York and also the pedestrianised area. It’s a godsend, great at getting around the small narrow streets, dodging cafe tables and chairs etc while it also carries far more than that 7.w Van. I’d hate to think I was navigating those packed and tiny streets without the mirrors that the truck has, overhanging shop signs, pedestrians, cyclists, other trucks and now those daft electric scooters all around you. I don’t know how the presenter has managed to form his opinion but in my experience he couldn’t be more wrong!

What I hate about van types is the hood, its just like on a regular car. Real trucks on the other hand have their engines under the cabin so the front end of the car is in line with the windshield, also you sit at a higher position meaning you actually see more of the road and thus feel safer, interior is bigger, it's much more comfy overall I think.
@Pilot1806 Жыл бұрын
Thats because the van type with the hood IS A VAN. Nobody claims it to be a truck.

I love driving my 7.5 ton Merc Atego Sleeper cab. Before I drove an Iveco 7.2 tons and it was shit. Never gona go for anything else, but for 7.5 ton trucks. Love them. They feel much nicer to drive also, far better looking than the Iveco Daily. Used to drive an Iveco Eurocargo nothing like the Daily. So yeah, I like 7.5 ton trucks more than those stupid 7.2 ton or whatever vans. No need for them. The 7.5 ton truck is the best. Atleast I love driving them.

Diver a 7.2 would swap it for a proper 7.5 lorry any day. Mirrors are use less on the 7.2. Not wide enough can see rear corner when pulling in after a over take on motorways. Or when baking up. Van engine that is not made to drive at a top speed of 56mph.

Why trash talk other trucks?, it all boils down to what one wants. All these trucks have a purpose in the industry. My opinion.
@no-damn-alias3 жыл бұрын
The 7.2t is shit to drive. The rear is very saggy when loaded and you can feel the frame flex horribly. Just don't ask about the power. Qay underpowered and all round visibility is poor and no comfort in the cab. The Daily 7.2 is the worst with a big trailer. Just no power what so ever. Driving up 5% incline anywhere you will be overtaken by any truck left and right and any college will hate you when you're driving in front. You only have the foot brake and no additional brakes like in a big lorry. Maybe in flat areas only on the highway it might be ok but here in the Alpes it's horrible. Don't talk about brake fade or brake wear. The engine is way too small for engine braking. At least the DPF will be never clogged as you drive full throttle almost all the time
