Do You REALLY Need To Use High Pass Filters??

Firstly, love that tee! Bottom is one of my all time favourite shows!! Rip Rick... The main reason I use a high pass filter on some stems is to bring down the low end so the dedicated bass stem and kick stems - plus other mid to low end stems can be heard more easily and not become hidden or muddy overall. I also do a low pass filter on the bassy stems to add oomf and lose the high end bits in there to add more punch. I do not do this for all my tracks, just on those that get in the way of others. I use no plug ins or compressors at all, never have! All my music is real, in usually one take all live in one room. Some the cymbals are just from the room mic that is a portable Zoom H2n in 150% M/S mode centred above the kick drum and the left/right aimed as best I could at the hi hat/snare on one side and on the other the ride. I have toms, snare and kick mics hooked up always but sometimes no overheads! So to remove the low end from this stereo track to make a fake overhead stereo stems I use a high pass filter on a copy of the original room mic stereo track whilst keeping the OG there very low in the mix for some mids, but usually have the high pass up higher in the front. It works well most of the time! I am fully self taught, all my tricks. I also am self taught in how to play drums, bass, guitar and keys. Plus ofc the recording of all these instruments, editing, mixing and all that other shet!

I mostly record live concerts, so I usually high and low pass everything to help with bleed.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I definitely hear a difference with the kick. It's very subtle, and I don't know if it's the phase shift, the fundamental being more focused, or the way it's affecting the compressor, but the unfiltered sounds a bit rounder in the low end, where the filtered has a spikier low end, and the fundamental comes through a little more on the latter

I usually ask myself, does it sound good after just basic tweaks, if I can play it back 3 times in a row and not cringe I know I am onto something, if I remove something and it stays that way and it sounds good great, I love music there are no real rules to a point

I'll use a hp filter if my ears tell me it sounds better, or if there is stuff in the low end that I don't need; and my ears tell me it's not sounding worse with the filter on.

One could argue that you should high pass at the lowest frequency your system is capable of reproducing on every channel.
