It was pretty bittersweet, when you think about it. While i was happy to see him alive and well, i was also somewhat disheartened to realize this was likely the last time we would see of him and everyone else to that matter. But it was a good ending to the series. He did not cease to exist alone, he went with Ubbe and the rest of the crew.

Those gates could mean anything really as its not just Valhalla has a gate to enter. the other three religions he knew about all have gates as well. Christianity has the gates of haven, budism has the gates of the Jade palice, and paganism had the gates to the summerlands
