CBSE scores are probably #1. You can be #1 in your class & not get an interview, at least for a dual degree program, if your CBSE is low. Externships are very important. Don't be annoying & work hard. Read about the cases you will see before you go to the OR. Research doesn't matter much and it is a drag unless you're a unique person. It pads the resume but I've never heard someone's research credentials discussed when making the rank list.

Congrats on wanting to specialize, oral surgery is pretty exciting if you could, go over ortho I’d really appreciate it because that’s where I believe I’d like to specialize in

This is for 6 year program only. Don't forget about your undergrad GPA, when you are interviewing with OMFS program, you are actually interviewed by both OMFS and med school admission. Some top programs don't even look at your app if you undergrad GPA is below certain number. Good luck!!!

Trevor West DDS I’m actually a senior at LSU in Baton Rouge. Applying in about a week when the cycle opens up! But from all of my family that have gone, they loved it. They were confident to practice right out of graduation and are doing well for themselves. And yeah, quite difficult to land interviews for OOS apps at LSU. But it looks like OSU is treating you amazing so I’m sure you aren’t too upset ha

Just my dime of opinion. I think CBSE is most important over GPA and rank. I'm not saying GPA is not important, you should get top 10% to be competitive, but for CBSE you need to be top 5%-2%, especially for OMFS residency

I have been wanting to go into dental for a while now to specialize in either oral surgery or orthodontics due to my own experience. I think that both of these options are so interesting.
@trevorwestdds55056 жыл бұрын
I though about Ortho too. It seems like an amazing lifestyle once you get established
@katieschweiger8836 жыл бұрын
Trevor West DDS : It does! I had braces for 6 years and then had jaw surgery because braces wasn't enough and the total bill for the surgery was like over $62k so it is a good field to go in to.

Do you usually have time to go to the gym, chill and watch some Netflix you know some “ me time “. Also, how do you manage to pay for you living expenses ? Loans ? Job?...
@trevorwestdds55056 жыл бұрын
So the amount of time you have depends on the week. I generally have a week or two without any tests where I have a ton of time to do whatever I want after class gets out. But then I have a week or two with multiple exams that gives me almost zero time because I have to study so much. Once you get used to taking advantage of the easy weeks, it's really not bad. I have way more time than I thought I would. Definitely not enough time for a job though unless it's like a shift on the weekends or something

Hi Trevor! I'm choosing between dental schools right now and am very interested in OMFS. Are schools like Columbia/UCLA/UCSF that are pass/fail and have high specialization rates worth the extra cost to do so? Also, what do you think of the pass/fail curriculum? Thanks in advance!
@PGKxNIGHTMARE6 жыл бұрын
How are grades determined in your courses? In my undergrad experience, some courses do it where the top 15% will get an A, 25% an A-, 35% a B+ and so on. However, some professors say "If you get an average of 90 or higher, you will receive an A no matter what." I was just wondering which method is most common in your dental school experience?
@chasesorenson404 жыл бұрын
I'll be attending Ohio State in the fall. I'm interested in Pediatric Dentistry. How competitive would you say that speciality is from what you've seen in your class? Also have you heard about OMFS residency yet?

Nothing personal, love your videos but yes I am an antidentite (Seinfeld) lol. I am in process of making a upper set of dentures and was wondering if you could go into any detail on how a $50,000 dollar set of dentures are priced. I hear better materials a little bit of titanium but were talking grams of materials. Implants, denture mounting studs, why it costs $150 to pull a molar out but thousands to drill a hole and screw in a stud? These aren't gold diamond encrusted dentures, just porcelain and/or acrylic with a thin titanium support molded inside.

What does your living situation look like?
@trevorwestdds55056 жыл бұрын
Coming from out of state I had to find a place to live online without ever seeing it...scary AF. Because of that I kind of chose a place on the nicer/more expensive side to make sure I enjoyed being home after a long day of class. I have a 1 bedroom place to myself that I love. My rent is 1150 with everything included except electricity. I could go cheaper for sure but I think I'll be ok with my loan situation
@chaffls87865 жыл бұрын
Trevor West DDS so before you even moved out of state (I live in FL too), your fafsa arranged your loans for your 4 yrs living expenses? Is someone allowed to live with you in dental school (I have a younger sister and don’t want to move without her)?

Can you talk about pediatric dentistry or periodontology competitiveness compared to oral surgery? Thanks!
@trevorwestdds55056 жыл бұрын
I believe all residencies are competitive. The higher your GPA and class rank are, the more interviews you will receive. However, from my knowledge, orthodontics is the most difficult to get into followed by Oral surgery second. I think pediatrics would be third or fourth I would wager.
@susanwheatley486 жыл бұрын
Actually it is spelled Paediatric Dentistry, and the world needs more Paediatric Dentists. You should specialize as that.

If someone fails to be a good competitive to dental residency by getting A grades, what do you suggest as plan B for him? I'm doing my best since class one but i feel year by year it's getting harder and harder to keep up with the A grades and the 3.75 - 4.00 GPA and there's nothing else i'd rather do for the rest of my life other than Oral and maxillofacial surgeries, but what's for plan B?
