thanks! Just keep in mind that 4k renders take way longer to denoise if you're using openimagedenoise. Denoising took upto 10 seconds on some of the renders I did. Blender 4.1 is adding gpu accelerated openimagedenoise so that would be very helpful

The reason is pretty simple - If you take some small part of low-res render there's, let's say, 50% that it's covered by the "unlucky ray" and went completely black. But in high-res instead of some small shapes being covered and some not there are enough pixels to evenly cover them in "lucky" and "unlucky" rays, so the denoiser can "see" the shapes and be applied more effective

That is a very nice explanation, I have 1 question. how can you determine the number of samples in 4k so that it takes the same time as 1080p? is it just trial and error? or do you render 1 frame then calculate the time and do some formula? would be very kind of you to explain more, and maybe you could provide some links to the technical explanation, I'm very interested in knowing more about this. thank you!

It depends on the resolution ratio. 4k is 3840x2160 pixels (8.2 million pixels) in most cases. Since 1080p is only 1920x1080 pixels (2 million pixels) we can see that 4k is 4 times as many pixels as 1080p. This gives us a ratio of 4:1. So basically, if your 1080p render at 1000 samples takes 1 minute, a 4k renders at 250 samples will also take around 1 minute (1000/4 = 250) This is just an estimate however, not calculating in stuff such as denoising time, noise threshold and loading assets. This is just a starting point, and if you want something more accurate you'd have to do a bit of trial and error

@@JayM.-zf2lq I touched blender in august of 2021, so a little more than 2 years. this doesnt really mean I have 2 years of experience howeer, because there were a lot of months where I was busy with other projects that didnt require blender. so you could say I used blender on and off
