The parts to replace a crank are not so expensive. But if you don't have the ability to change it yourself, the Labour charge is very high. I think this poor guy won't do that again.

I like how you diss on the 'home' mechanic. I was given a SYM VS150 (150cc 4 valve cush mounted GY6 style engine) that had run just long enough to get home from the 'professional' scooter shop after having a new belt fitted. He couldn't be arsed taking it back and it sat in his garage for a couple of years until he gave it to me. Looks like they might've tightened the variator nut whilst the belt was down in the valley so it didn't actually get tightened metal to metal (i.e up against the boss and crank shoulder). Of course soon as the belt moved up the variator faces the nut is loose as. Destroyed the splines on the variator driven pulley and the crankshaft. There was about 1.5 - 2mm of crank spline left but the only way I could get the new variator driven pulley to go in far enough to engage with what spline was left was to machine the boss down 2.5mm. This now means the kickstart throw out gear no longer reaches the engagement dogs on the variator face and it has changed the gearing characteristics a little but it's up and running without a full stripdown to replace the crank. And all this because it was fixed by a 'professional'. I'm a neighbour BTW. LOL. Incidentally the driven pulley was all alloy, yes, even the centre spline section. Not sure if the shop fitted that too but the genuine SYM item I bought had a steel centre with the female spline. It alone cost 4x what a complete variator assembly can be bought for ebay. Go figure.

Wouldn’t it be possible to use a round die to re cut the crank threads to the next down sized nut and then purchase a matching nut of a softer steel just like the factory nut? I am not sure how successful re cutting the threads would be but it would save a lot of money not having to basically rebuild the engine. What do you guys think?
@Scooterswapshop
@Scooterswapshop 3 жыл бұрын
so put a nut on it that cant put any tq too.... how would that be helpful? it would snap off or strip those threads its not hard or expensive if you do it your self. to replace the crank.
@jamesesteban5973
@jamesesteban5973 3 жыл бұрын
@@Scooterswapshop I’m just saying to cut new threads to a slightly smaller size and use a slightly smaller nut with the same hardness as the stock nut. It would likely still handle the torque spec for the crank. It would also have a total cost of like $1 for a new nut? Is there some fatal mistake I’m missing. I’m just throwing out the idea as a possible low cost solution
@Berring1000
@Berring1000 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that here was problem caused bcs of using wrong thread pitch...most of the stores will have 1.50 "of the shelf" while crankshaft is 1.25.
@SthsdecowboyCowboy
@SthsdecowboyCowboy 21 күн бұрын
Yeah James.. what I did was rethread the shaft and drill a small hole through the shaft at the end, and then use a thinner nut, that will pass the the hole, and simply add a small cotter pin..

my motorcycle mechanic who I have been loyal to for 5 years destroyed my crankshaft because he had been using an impact gun to tighten the variator bolt. it cost over 1k to fix and put me out of work for a week and I lost 800 because I'm self employed. moral of the story don't trust anyone even the bike mechanic lol.
