I picked a doggie daycare / boarding facility and started with just day care for a few times and then gradually expanded to one night and two and three night stays. I just came back from a 9 day vacation and she is fine. Zoe gets excited on the day to Paradise for Dogs and is always happy to be home - exhibiting no ill effects. The staff loves her because she plays with all of the dogs. I think that the key is finding a place that she is happy to stay.

I kept a friend's doberman while she went on vacation. The dog knew me well. She was great,my grandkids wore her out. She didn't tell me the dog wasn't allowed on the furniture. She refused to get off her bed after spending two weeks with us. We had fun.

Another option is to leave them with your trainer, if you work with a trainer who can board. I've done this with many if the dobermans I have trained and it works it great.

Thanks John for touching on this subject. We found a good home dog sitter in town, and we keep putting our Doberman on Saturday play date first to see how they get along, and things doing well, we start having them stay one night then two nights and finally , seeing them getting so comfortable then we finally book our vacation. This things take time, and definitely so worth it. We are also lucky to find a good dog home sitter too who keep us posted on everything and keep us update with pictures, videos everyday including playing time, napping time, and eating time. We brought their crates, blankets, toys and treats every single time too.

Both of my Dobies would pout and go on hunger strike. They would also retaliate by destroying throw rugs and "tell" us, "This is the price for going on vacation." And they developed separation anxiety; they stuck to us like glue. We soon learned that DOBIES NEED VACATION TOO!

We had no vacation issues with our first doberman that we had for 13 years. We typically visited with my parents, who were in their 70s, at their home two or three times every month. Our dog had good bonds with them and was completely familiar with their home and some of their routines. It was as much of a vacation for our dog as it was for us and no issues when we all returned to our home. Our second doberman, we had for 10 years, was a different matter. My parents, now in their 80s couldn't fulfill the boarding function. We chose a boarding kennel, based on the recommendation of a close friend and it was on the way to our one week vacation destination. She was fine when she met her temporary caregivers, until we left and they led her into the kennel enclosure. There she transformed into the tenant from HELL. She must have felt abandoned to a place that she did not want to be. She became incredibly aggressive to all the attendants, growling, snarling, baring her teeth in full attack mode. They were unable to walk and exercise her and highly challenged to even feed her or clean up the kennel. This was a time before cell phones and the kennel could not contact us. On our 4th day of vacation, I phoned the kennel to check up on our sweat baby to learn that she had become the worst demonic hell raiser that they had ever encountered. Forced to end our vacation early, we returned to the kennel by about 9 pm. Our girl was ecstatic to see us returned and the realization that we were not gone forever. When the excitement calmed down, she was absolutely fine with the manager of the kennel, letting the manger pet her and licking her hand and the manager stated; "This is a completely different dog". Luckily, no behavioral after affects when we returned home, except she became a "super-velcro" dog for about two weeks.

Nyx was with us basically 24/7 as she was also a trucker dog. If we ever needed to leave she and our Lab would go to a pets hotel that had full day day camps. Our Lab was like, okay bye, Nyx would always look back, but was totally fine during her time there. It was an exciting time when we returned though lol She did not pick up any bad habits...that we noticed, and it was straight back to her normal routine like clockwork. Cheers

Blade travels with us all the time. We dont have family here to watch him, so we found a great luxury pet lodge where he has a tv and a nice bed there. They send pictures, and we can even tell he enjoys being there. The last time he didn't come, he had a little anxiety the first day bc his baby human sister wasn't near. We were only gone for 2 days. Then, he perked up and started eating and playing with other doggies.

As someone who's had petite and gran mal since I was 3 1/2 years old, I'm fine with the Velcro dog thing (plus my 3 year old Goliath sized Josie makes sure I don't feel alone). Even though my family's had her for since she was 2 years old, she literally bonded with me in so quick (probably because she KNOWS she's needed even before seeing my first seizure). She's an amazing watchdog, VERY protected of me (never had intruders); she's scared away a fully grown doe, one of my Karen neighbors cats, other neighbors dogs, and tried to go after a couple of baby snakes which I protected because 1:they weren't poisonous, and 2:they were "pest control" snakes not bad snakes like water moccasins. She barks at neighbors walking by who are with their dogs, but she stays with me (her barking is probably a warning to them). My dad works at home as a Mechanic for classic cars, so when customers drive up to one of his work garages, she barks but when out near them, she's all friendly (customers compliment her on that and how beautiful she is). But I know if the intruder situation ever happens, she will step up. It's funny how she's views land squirrels as enemy #1 in the animal world, but flying squirrels? She ignores wild ones and looks at Koko with curiosity (but no barking) with head tilting. Josie's a sweetheart, but her playfulness can be overwhelming for a lot for other people and other pets (she knows who to be gentle with thanks to her brains). Sorry for talking so long about my Josie.😅

I am so glad you made this video because my husband and I are going overseas for one week this summer and my 2 year old Doberman is going to stay in our home with my teenage daughter. She is bonded to my daughter and in-laws who will be in my house with her but I have been so anxious about leaving her that I almost told my friends we can’t make it to their wedding. Hello, so I started my doberman in doggy daycare this week with a family owned business that is run out of their house after quite a few people recommended her. They told us the reason they started this business was because most of these boarding places will keep them in a kennel and they hated that for their dog. They have activities throughout the day like dog parks, beach trips, mental stimulation games, etc. He went 3 times this week (Tuesday, Wednesday & today - friday). Tues and Wed went great, he came home super exhausted from all of the activities they had him doing throughout the day so he pretty much slept the whole day. Yesterday (thurs) he seemed a little more calmer than normal and when they picked him up this morning he seemed eager to leave. Well they ended up dropping him off early because they said he was being aggressive all day and he also started marking his territory inside. He's potty trained and neutered so this was a shock to us and almost unbelievable until he went potty in our living room. Then we started to notice he seemed depressed and kind of put 2 & 2 together that maybe he wasn't acting calm on Thursday or super exhausted Tuesday and Wednesday but maybe he was extremely stressed out. Huge and hard lesson on our part and this Dobie mom is completely emotional and feeling like I have failed my baby. My question is how to I get him back to being happy again? Or did I ruin him for life? Any help you can suggest would be greatly appreciated. 😭😭😭😭

About a year ago, when our Dobermann was a bit over 4 years of age, I had to go to hospital by ambulance. Hubby stayed home with her (because of her, really); until that time, the longest I’d been away from home (leaving her with hubby) was 8 hours. Apparently she lay inside the front window until I came home by taxi, 10 hours later. At first she barked her box off at me as I was walking down the driveway (it was night still) until she realised it was me. She was so happy to see me, but very gentle in her happiness; she must’ve known I wasn’t well. But we don’t have any friends where we live, and the only family are elderly ones, or ones that live at least an hour’s drive away. I need to find someone with whom we can have puppy play-dates, so they come around often enough to get to know our dog’s temperament and likes/dislikes, and who our Princess shows us that she trusts… just in case of an emergency 😉

I was gone for 10 days this month, I had a fabulous house sitter who even let my Doberman sleep with her in the bed and spoiled my dog absolutely rotten. But when I walked in the door from my trip, I could clearly see that my girl had a nothing but desperation on her face. It was as if she was in shock and thought I was never coming home ever again. She also licked her flank. It took her several days to get back on track mentally.

I was just thinking about vacations with dobermans! You know, for the dog I don't have yet 😅 I'm not much of a traveler though, I stick to places I can get to by car/ferry (I live on an island). But if there was an emergency situation where I had to be away for a few days this is a great list! My hope is that once I get a dobie, I can make friends at the dog park and we can cover each other's absences and arrange play dates and stuff.

Thank you. This is what I suspected. I'm traveling in a few weeks and was looking at certain options and just know that boarding or even leaving my girl with someone else could cause trauma. I am her world. Last time I left her in her home with family she wouldn't eat for 2 days. As a result, I made the decision she has to come with me. We had to leave recently and asked my husband’s father to live in our flat while we were away (Option 3 according to your list). We hired a dog walker to walk our dog twice a day. Our trip lasted three days, when we got back it turned out our Doberman having gone though some stress had contracted canine cough (she had never been sick up to that point). She is back to normal, thankfully!

The dog walker likely had another dog they were walking that had kennel cough (it is highly contagious). So sorry that you went through that, but am glad that your father in law could stay in your flat while you were away. That gave your Doberman good company, no doubt!

Was hit by a dui driver was from my house for two months and he got most of what you listed he is a changed dog, he was bonded to me he is my mobility service dog, he went from 89 pound dog to 51 pound dog he tried to starve him self so hubby started to bring him to the hospitable and long term care facility, he started to go around the long term and being a therapy dog which he started enjoying when i got home he was a changed dog was short tempered with the other doberman female nippy, he ok now still stayed changed now he shares his home with two female dobermans get along great, he goes everywhere with me one because he a trained mobility service dog

I usually just stay at Holiday Inn hotels. They're not fancy, but they're consistently decent hotels, and they allow dogs for an extra $25 with no weight limit

I take mine to doggie daycare, and they kennel them too, at least twice a month! if I am going on a trip i take them there 2 to 3 times before I leave, it works out great for them because they love going there and when I get home, they are happy to see me and no problems!

Consider also your vet, vets will often board your dog. My dobe vacations with me, but when I needed to board my dog because of an elderly parents health issues, my vet was amazing.

My Doberman was a rehome from original owners. They kept in kennel for 20+hrs everyday for beginning of his life! Took a yr to undo it! He doesn't eat until i hand feed him. He chews his stomach and paws as soon as i got him. So i have to really be with him all the time and im home 23hrs a day! The pitbull and chihuahuas have really help with this. He sleeps in my bed but now is ok to lay in his too. We dont go on vaca at all because im too sick. But an overnight dr test everyone is fine just no eating or drinking. So needless to say that scare prob at 16weeks to work through with confidence is gone! I have to really work to get him to move by something new like new cords to the tv or computer on the floor. He shuts down. But i get very excited and very loving to get him through it 4 times until he stops locking up. So you cant just pin them like a cat or pig! They need experience

When I was growing up my family always had Black Labradors. First one was a very sweet albeit dumb as a door nail guide dog school reject from some training facility in New York named Sam, we’re fairly certain he had an extra Chromosome, my dad taught special education his entire 35 plus year career in Boston so he certainly knew the signs lol, we called him U turn because you’d throw a stick in the water and every time without fail he’d get halfway to the stick and make a u turn and come back, never saw him retrieve once but he was a great dog. Our 2nd lab Casey we got from a local breeder and any time we went away and couldn’t take her with us she would always go back to the breeder and visit her mom Angel and her sister Holly. Casey was one of the smartest, quietest most well behaved Labrador I’ve met

Don't be afraid to take your Bully with you! Start small, camping out in the backyard, and build up to longer and deeper immersion in your vacation. Don't try going headlong in traveling right away! Build up to it! You will learn from it, and so will your Bully!

@@DobermanPlanet when I have a dobie absolutely. My American bully was a rescue, not socialised before I got him and treated really poorly. So altho I did everything right from the moment I got him, when he hit maturity he started hating on stranger dogs. I'm in the UK and Bull breeds are looked down on as dangerous dogs and I know that if he hurt another dog he'd be blamed regardless of fault. Bad people and poor ownership sadly.

I went to Europe for a week and I had my dobie with my grandparents, HE LOVES them, we used to share homes which is where he was raised. By the time we came back he was FAT and happy, it depends on the person you choose to have your doberman stay with.

I love how to see how strongly you are bonded with your Dobermann. I had one and I still think at him daily although the das he passed away was 20 years ago. The only thing I really hate is when people cut ears and tail of that poor dogs just to make them look more scary. Luckily this is forbidden in my country

I have kennelled my Dobers VERY RARELY after a disasterous kennelling. I thought it was the best situation as it was with my vets office but came back 3 days later to find my very nervous girl in a deep dark section completely away from all the other dogs and very stinky. After this, I do not go unless my DOG can go with me. Now this means that I will take a crate with me for the hotel room and never gone for more than a few hours at a time BUT it works for us. NEVER AGAIN will I trust my best friend in a strangers hands. We also had a home setter that would come and house set with the dogs that the dogs knew very well and enjoyed his company. People do not realize that when we have a DOBERMAN in our lives he or she is NOT just another DOG.

If you plan on using a friend or relative for events where you best friend can’t attend, would a routine quarterly overnight visit help? I had some friends who used to board their dog (not a Doberman) at least one day a month to create somewhat of a routine away from home. They had a very good relationship with the facility.

What about dog daycare and/or boarding for one night periodically? I am looking at getting a Doberman puppy, but I’m an EMT and frequently work 24 hour shifts. I have someone that lives with me who could look after the pup during most of those days. However, she will be gone this summer, so I would have to board the pup two out of seven days each week. I would spend the rest of the week playing with the pup, taking them to parks and on hikes, and doing lots of training. Is it feasible for a Doberman to have this lifestyle for eight weeks straight?

We had a family emergency right before covid hit and left us stranded at their house for several months. Even though my son who lives with us was there our Doby went into full on depression. She stopped eating and lost a lot of weight and nearly died. I managed to go pick her up and bring her to the family's house. She started eating again and now is back to normal weight. HOWEVER, she is more needy than she was before. Constantly whining even if I go in the next room to get a drink. I ALWAYS have to be touching her. I think she's afraid I'll never come back. My husband now works from home all the time but if I leave she goes into full on whining mode until I get back. This was 2 years ago and I don't know how to help her with this. Any ideas???

My Doberman died in essence from my leaving to help a friend with brain cancer. I left my beloved dog with my (evil) mother while I flew to help a friend who had surgery for brain cancer. She failed to tell me he refused to get up or eat for a week. When she finally said something, I jumped on the first flight I could get. By the time I got back, his back was so locked up and he hadn't urinated for days bc he was too good to go bathroom inside the house. I took him to the vet bc he couldn't walk even though he tried to get up on his front paws when he saw me. The vet put him down. I'll never forgive myself and her. Thankfully she died.

I left my boy for 3 days after we recently adopted him from his bad situation and when we got back he jumped into my arms and wanted me to hold him and wouldn't stop shaking! Since then he has become my trained service dog so he can come on ever vacation we are on ❤ once we left him at home with his own Grandma and we got back and he shuned us 😂 lol never again

The other point worth mentioning is how bloody expensive a really good boarding facility can be. Boarding our dogs often costs as much as the trip to Europe does!

Hi.. i've been watching u over and over for more than half year to learn about dobie. And now somebody offered me to adopt his 7 months old dobie, is it still okay? I mean dobie is really one man dog right? And what about his training? From what i know the previous owner have multiple type of breed and love dogs so much.

We always travel with my Doberman named Anchor. You know I refused to attend the marriage of a relative, the reason was simple. They are dog phobic and advised us to keep our dog in kennel. Means how can we just drop our baby to kennel. We travel together and we never leave our dog alone.

3 stories about my former Doberman and me. 1) My wife and I went on a holiday trip. We left him at my parents in law. When we came back he ran to me licked once over my hand and than ran to my wife. But it didn't took long until he was happy with me again. 2) He hated water, especially cold water. On vacation on a beach I ran into 14 degees cold water. He first followed me. As he realized how cold the water was he stopped following me, looked at me "saying": Are you crazy man. The water is f... cold ! 3) Another experience: Whan he was a puppy I made a walk with him whan it was cold and rainy. After some hundret meters he stopped, sat down under a tree (ears down) looking at me begging "please lets go home". I said: "Do your own business and we will return immediately". So he did and we returned home. :)))

I had to go out of state and there was no way to take my Doberman with me on a plane. I asked every airline and was told crated under my seat, or they have to be in crate with cargo. I even offered to pay for an entre row of seats for myself and the dog and was still told nope. It would have been a good 10 hours or so for my dog stuck in crate in cargo. Also had to switch planes and the holding areas for the animals are not climate controlled so I wasn't doing that. If someone knows a way to get the dog on a plane outside of a private jet or trying to claim emotional support animal let me know. would be nice to know in the future, but I couldn't find an airline around me to do it. I wound up paying my neighbor that the dog knew to come over 4 times a day and left the dog alone at home. I have Pet cams to log in and check on the dog when I'm not at home too. I didn't wanna lock her up in a boarding kennel either. Kennels and doggy day cares are not for me. I hear to many stories about animals being abused by the people that work there. Figured my best option was let her be home and just pay to have her watched, but I hated her being alone that much. Plus with my cameras, I get an alert of any activity in my place, so when the neighbor would come over I could observe everything the entire time. I had to cut the trip to 4 days. Only once in her life I've done this I just don't go away and I'm ok with that

Haven't had a dob, but I do have a malamute that you can leave by himself all day if I'm working in the house but if I go to town for an hour he acts like he thought I was never coming back. Not really the same I guess. Dogs are weird people.

I do not go on vacation, period! unless I can take my dog with me! If what i want to go on vacation (or family wants to go on vacation) that cannot include my dog, then we do not do it So if this happens, we stay at home, and we/I find wonderful, and enjoyable things that we can do locally.

I’m very lucky that the people that look after her when I’m working do overnight stays. It’s like her second home - on acreage with lots of other medium size breeds. She just loves it 😊 However the training regression is something I need to be mindful of so she does need ‘retuning’ when I get home.

What about training camps? In a new kennel/boarding place. I will have more info on how long they get trained every day, play with dogs and etc. Would do you think that option would rank? Since it keeps them busy but are in a new environment that we’ve been to once
