Well there ya go!! I always thought that it was Lurch from the Addams Family who popularized the "You Rang" trope
@19king144 ай бұрын
The actor that played Lurch said it in copying Maynard. Lurch was to always be speachles. But the film crew heard Lurch copying Maynard and allowed it in. Lurch started having more speaking parts after that.

I've been watching this on Tubi (free app); I hadn't seen it since the 1960's. Outraged PTA's demanded the writers drop the "I gotta kill that boy" line during the second season.

I can't remember how old I was. A TV channel was playing these in the morning before school
@jons.62164 ай бұрын
I had to go look it up, but Dobie also had an older brother Davey in the first season that went off to college a la Chuck Cunningham! Haha! He was played by Dwayne Hickman's real life brother Daryl! A funny thing I noticed when the Decades Channel was showing blocks of episodes was that right around 1962-63 the same time June Cleaver got bouffant hair, so did Florida Freibus that played Mrs Gillis!
@tvcrazyman4 ай бұрын
There was another interesting bit of trivia I didn't get a chance to add to the video, both Hickman brothers played on the Lone Ranger, once as the same character at different points in the character's life.

I love Bob Denver as Maynard more than Gilligan. I think it's one of the greatest TV characters of all time. And Zelda was great with her wit and nose wrinkles. She would have been my pick if I was Dobie. Same way I preferred Mary Ann to Ginger.

I saw Gilligan first in the 70s, and was a big fan of that show. That's probably what got me watching Dobie, then Dobie became one of my all time favorites as well.

I wonder if the catch phrase you rang? uttered by Lurch on The Addams Family was inspired by Maynard G. Krebs?

Yep, I think the producer made him go blond. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere he was forced to do that which is why he went to his natural color later on.

Along with Scooby-Doo, I firmly believe that The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis was the inspiration for Saved by the Bell. Dobie talked to the audience in front of The Thinker statue, Zak Morris spoke to the audience in front of the school lockers. Screech is Maynard, Kelly is Thalia, Slater is Milton. Saved by the Bell began as Good Morning Miss Bliss. It was later reworked to focus on the kids. I believe the creators looked to Dobie to for inspiration.
@tvcrazyman4 ай бұрын
You're probably right. There's probably a few other teen shows that drew inspiration from Dobie as well.

By the second season the censors banned Dobie's father from saying the threatening "I gotta kill that boy - I just gotta." So in a second season episode, for the last time, he turned to the camera in his usual way and frustratingly said; "Ooooh, I just can't say it." A tease to the censors.
