I am the same way. Same with Cheers when Sam says, "Sorry, we're closed." Always gets to me. I think no matter how many times you watch a series, every time you get to the end it will always hit you hard. I have most of these series on dvd or blu ray so can watch them often. But every time it ends (even though I can restart it) it still gets me. Just shows how great the actors are and how great the writing is, that these characters seem real to you and a part of your life. :) Golden Girls was always a bit underrated and I hated how young people would say its' not funny just b/c the characters are older or men might say it's a show for women. But if a show is good (like GG and Designing women) it didn't matter who the main characters were or how old they are. Funny is funny, and great, well-written characters with great chemistry between the actors are timeless and should be watched by everyone.

Golden Girls was a revolutionary show for its time since it was about senior citizen women, The Bob Newhart Show had a running bit where Bob would wake up in the middle of the night and tell his wife about his weird dreams, so it was doubly awesome that they used that to end Newhart.

Richard Sanders looked in his 60's when WKRP in Cincinnati and even though he wasn't that old it's crazy to think that he's still alive. As for the Golden Girls Betty White was actually the oldest and lived the longest. The Golden Girls still holds up today. Same goes for Three's Company. Seen Marla Gibbs in an episode of Young Sheldon and it was nice to see her, brings back so much nostalgia from The Jeffersons to 227. As for the Cheers theme song always made me sad and would try and miss the opening.

@@alanvallazza9781 Yeah, I know I remember. Mama's Family went on hiatus for about two years and when they came back for a third season Betty and Rue were already on Golden Girls. Betty did several episodes of Mama's Family before the show first ended but she did one last episode in the third season but Rue did not because they killed her character off Aunt Fran at the beginning of the third season. Also Betty and Rue switched roles on The Golden Girls.

Now from I had read many a year ago!!!. Roseanne had seen the British show Ab Fab and wanted to make a U.S. version, with her playing the character of Eddie and Jackie playing the Patsy character. But all the networks turned her down, so she just turned the last season of her show into Ab Fab. And If I also remember, Both Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley made a cameo appearance on Roseanne as their Ab Fab characters.

When you think about it, Three's Company IS an 80s show. It just happened to start in the 70s. That said, the Chrissy seasons were It for me, I remember them most from the reruns and I had a special fondness for Suzanne Somers because of Step by Step. I watched The Golden Girls in full starting in 2021 and I kinda regret not getting into it sooner because it's as good as they say it is. Roseanne still holds a special place in my heart even with all the controversy surrounding the lead actress. John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and the rest are amazing.

So this is where the wiggle dance Ally asks George on Ally McBeal, came from? The only 80s sitcom I watched were Golden Girls, Who’s the Boss and Married with Children. Didn’t like Roseanne, and never heard of the rest.

I think the majority of the shows run or its best seasons are what decade it was in. Happy Days is a 70s sitcom, even though it ran until 1984

We lived in Vermont during the show. A friend and I were driving to Montpelier and we saw three guys in a pickup truck. We both exclaimed, 'Larry, Darrell and Darrell!' Teams play softball in the snow with the bases shoveled out and softballs are bright orange!

I read somewhere that the end theme on “WKRP In Cincinatti” was actually just a bunch of nonsense words and sounds and it was put together that way on purpose since they would not need to pay any royalties to use it.

The story I heard was the songwriter had written the music but didn't have the lyrics yet. He was asked to do a demo of the song and just made up jibberish. The powers that be thought that version worked and hence the closing music was born.

"Roseanne" to me is such a 90's show,I don't think it should belong on the list, although it did technically start in the 80's,it would be like calling "Seinfeld" an 80's show.

Agreed, coming out in late 1988 and lasting until the late 90s would not make it much of an 80s sitcom. Shouldn’t be on the list.

Newhart's finale was just iconic. And I agree with others, The Cosby Show really should have been on this list. WKRP is remembered as being very funny, but in actuality it wasn't that much. It was a great show with good characters and it touched on some important topics, but the actual comedy was scarcer than most sitcoms.

I hear you on WKRP. It had great fully formed characters right out of the box, whereas most shows need a few seasons to define and establish theirs. It was a well constructed workplace ensemble sitcom, perfectly acted, but the humor hasn't traveled all that well. I might be the wrong one to listen to, though, since there are only about 9 or 10 sitcoms from 1970-2000 that I think still hold up as funny. Some are interesting. Good time capsules, but not much else.

George in Newhart was also in the Bob Newhart Show a couple times playing an old friend of Bobs with the nickname The Peeper. They should have mentioned that. Would have made it more relatable and funny. Tom was hilarious on the Bob Newhart show too.

WKRP theme songs were Intro to represent the easy listening aspect of where it was to the rock and roll end theme of where it went. From the easyness of the beginning of the show to the ruff transition to the surviving rock and roll at the end of each episode.

You in the USA had so many good series, as a teenager in Germany you were unlucky, we had the "Schwarzwaldklinik" and "SOKO 5113" only late in the eighties when there was cable TV that came by private broadcasters to Germany, many American Series where dubbed and on Air. There were various series from the States like Bonanza, Colt Seavers, Magnum, Golden Girls), but many episodes were missing.

From watching Bea Arthur's real emotions in her final speech on "The Golden Girls," to (and I was not a fan of "Newhart") one of the BEST ever final scenes of any show (I was a HUGE fan of "The Bob Newhart Show") to what I thought was a weak ending to an absolute POWERHOUSE of a comedy ("We're closed" uttered from inside Cheers by Sam to a unknown pair of legs on the steps leading down to the bar - though Norm's speech about Sam really being there for his one TRUE love - the bar), the 1980s (I was born in 1971) I still will debate that it was the decade that had not only the best music EVER but the best TV shows ever!
