Because you didnt have the internet and sites like Pornhub so porno mags were generally the most accessible way of getting porn. As with all things people would just throw them away in the streets and to an inquiring young boy you would take an interest in such things (thinking about it now it was disgusting but you take what you can get). Now with the internet no one buys porns and definitely not magazines from you local newsagent so you wont see these magazines floating about. Even if you did I don't anyone would take notice when they could just easily go online and find videos.
