I ran into a buddy at the dock and he had figured out how to catch the huge striped bass that were hanging around it. One is 40 pounds and the other is 30 pounds. Enjoy. Congratulations Ray.

These are the fish we should be making big tournaments about. Stripers are a great fish. Wish more people would view them as they do LMB and try to make something more of this species. Thanks for posting.

People think of striper as an open water fish but they feed a lot at night into early morning in the shallows pushing baitfish in the spring. My biggest striper I've caught so far hit my topwater plug in a foot of water at first light and scared the crap out of me! I thought something was coming after me!

That first fish was much more docile than the ocean stripers we catch here in the northeast. That big fella just rolled over and gave up when they had him at the dock.

What memories I had fishing for stripers with my grandfather back in the 50s. Back when they were plentiful on the west coast of California. Look at the numbers charts over the years and it's pretty depressing news. Anyway, the most fun I ever had was catching them off of any kind of surface, sand, rocky shores, anyplace if you were lucky to be around during a anchovy run. One day we were on highway 1 early in the morning when my grandfather decided to pull into a place called Montara Beach. It was a place about 40 miles south of San Francisco and at that time I recall the conditions were calm, where usually Montara Beach surf always seemed to be rougher than other areas. He spotted gulls diving about 300 yards off shore and that was the cue he needed to pull into the parking lot and unload our gear. I was amazed how calm the surf was, aided by a low tide I actually could walk out a ways on the sand, but then I spotted something that got the heart pumping, no, not a Great White Shark, but hugh schools of anchovies swimming past me, no further than ten yards away. I yelled out to my grandfather as I ran back to where we were setting up and I still remember him saying to the effect the bass will be following them. We were lucky to be two of the very few people on the beach at the time, Montara Beach had nice sand, but again the surf was considered dangerous and myself and a friend found that out 4 or 5 years later, but that's another story. We waited for the tide to turn and once it did the birds started moving in with it following the schools of anchovies. It was a blast just watching hundreds of them doing their thing, by this time they were joined by other sea birds, I look back on that now and I wish I had my current camera gear with me to record the action. When the birds got to the surf line my grandfather casted out his three hook leader set up using fresh anchovies as bait, yes, finding fresh anchovies for bait was easy back in the 50s, everything now is frozen and you know how crappy frozen bait can be, you need three hooks because one or two of the baits would fly off if you're surf casting for distance. My grandfather was old school when it came to bait choices, at the time I don't ever recall him using an artificial lure, but I do remember seeing one in his tackle box. Most of the time when we would go fishing, which was every day for two solid weeks every summer for ten years, we would fish for surf perch, the best tasting fried fillets in the world! So fresh bait was the gold standard for them. This time the situation in the surf changed that and it was then I decided to try the good old Hopkins lure. We didn't use spin reels, we used big Penn bait casters and as most of you know, not the best choice for throwing lures as far as you could, but I learned after repeated backlashes and tangles how to long cast with them, it's all in the thumb and in that sense I liked the bait caster reels better. I was using one of his hand built custom bamboo poles, with eyelets secured by hand wrapped silk line, the stock was also hand carved by him, the set up was a work of art. I believe it was on my second cast I hooked my first striper, I can't tell you how excited I was on the inside and I remember my grandfather coming up and reaching out to assist, but I told him I had it, that I was OK. Prior to that first strike, any previous stripers from caught on other days were hooked and landed by him. Most were one off stragglers while we were fishing for surf perch and being just a kid, I would fish for a period of time and then find something else to do for a while. But my grandfather stayed focused on the fishing all day, it was his passion for sure and he worked the bait while I would let my pole just sit there. I still remember the combined strength of the outgoing surf and the big fish on the end of the line and watching the line cut through the water left and right, you could pick up the sound of the monofilament line as it was being stretched to the max, it was music to my ears! I quickly learned to relax as the waves went out then reel like mad when the waves came in, this was the method I used until the fish revealed himself on the sand and that is when my grandfather reached down and picked him up by the gills, walking him back with an ear to ear grin. Well, his ears were different, both were damaged when he was a professional wrestler during the 30s and early 40s. What a great person he was and all of us remember him the same way, the great Thanksgiving dinners at his house and most of all the freshly prepared Abalone he free dived for, something he did into his 70s. He introduced all of his grand kids to fishing and the memories of that will last forever.

In Tennessee, its perfectly legal to use gamefish as bait as long as they meet one of two criteria. 1. You purchased them from a hatchery and have the receipt to prove it. 2. You caught them yourself and they meet all legal size limits. In both cases you can only have your daily creel limit per person available as bait. Rainbow trout are considered "striper candy" and they are used often for big stripes. Saw a 50lber caught on a 19" brown trout one time.

Striped bass in inland lakes do not breed. They seldom have a spawning run.
@snakeeyes92467 жыл бұрын
Overwatch118 still a smart idea to release bass that size. I release 100% of the sport fish I catch for two reasons: so they can breed, and so I can possibly catch them again when they get bigger.

They normally have torn aortas and bleed out slowly. They are found a few days later dead on the surface.

If you use live bass for bait in GA, don't get caught. Tell mr. game warden you caught the bass and the striper ate it. They are more sneaky than the cops. Our boat was boarded on Allatoona when a guy a couple hundred yards up asked what bait we were using and we told him the one that was just caught came off a rainbow trout. You can buy them from the bait store but still have to go by the rules as to how many you can have on you. Turns out he was the game warden. He counted each and every one of the trout. Be careful what bait you have.
