It scares me that people always seem to mention having panic attacks out in public. But, I get them at home for absolutely no reason.

My first panic attack was at home my Mum asked me to hang up my clothes and in the middle of doing so I suddenly had a panic attack I hage them at school as well and at home but no where else thankfully. Don't worry that you only have them at home xx

My problem is that my panic attacks don't last a mere 10-20 minutes. They last hours. I recently learned that these 'multi-hour' panic attacks are actually a wave of separate panic attacks, one after another - rather than one panic attack. The symptoms of a panic attack are very hard to simply accept and ignore when the extreme discomfort lasts for up to 3-5 hours. I wish it was as easy as this doctor explains.

This video changed my life indefinitely. Anyone going through this, please take the Doc's advice to heart. You must break these associations that a certain place or activity is scary. Next time you have a panic attack, sit there and accept it, reminding yourself that you're safe. If you do this right and don't run, there's a good chance you will never have one again. I know that despite not having another panic attack after this life-changing one, you may still think and worry about them (this is panic disorder after all). However, the trauma and worry goes away eventually, I can promise you this. Eventually one day, you will go to a place that you were scared of before and walk out realizing that the entire time the thought of a panic attack didn't cross your mind. From then on, you kicked its ass. Best of luck to all.

Thank you doctor Barry. Found your video 6 years ago when I had horrible panic disorder. Your 10 min KZbin video changed my life. With a little practice I haven’t had a panic attack since I started practicing taking the fear out of panic attacks. To others struggling, you can do this! You will beat your anxiety and panic disorder the same way I did, just using Dr. Barry’s words for diffusing the fear of panic.

The doctor says it's as simple as reminding yourself "it's uncomfortable but not dangerous". This is true but not sure how it really helps those with panic. I'm not afraid of dying, or danger, I'm afraid of the symptoms, can't breathe, shaky, can't think, embarrassment, etc. Anyone who has a panic disorder knows it's not deadly, we have all been through dozens of panics, what we fear are the symptoms.

I accepted it and it sucked for a few moments but then it a part of the panic was gone. I m saying to myself "Anxiety and panic attacks are my best friends" "I accept this, let s see how bad can it go" and then im feeling better. I also go to the shop and think "what s the worst that could happen? Let s see" and that helps me a lot. Just accept it. I had a very hard 2 weeks but this shit helped pe A LOT. It s almost gone.

Very good Dr. Harry. I had my anxiety for about 12 years..sometimes its been hell, but the last year or two I learned to accept it. And as I did the bastard went away. I never had drugs for this or even therapy, I thought I could treat myself...and in a way I did. I won the battle.

I have mixed reviews about this. I went without meds and consistent help for almost a year. I tried managing my panic attacks for so long without meds that I became severely depressed. After so long I opted to take meds for both anxiety and depression. Panic attacks were gone for over a decade. I stopped taking anti anxiety meds 8 months ago. The panic attacks have returned and with all of my prior understanding of what they are, nothing seemed to help. So opted back on meds and am also in therapy. People like me can only go so long with solely talking ourselves through events and then our bodies react regardless of what we attempt to rationalize. For me, it took more help. I've no regrets opting to take medication that has helped me remain calm and allowed me my life back.

After doing 4 years in psychology and another 4 years specializing in Anxiety and its counter-part, Depression, I can really agree with this information. Allowing your mindset to tease your current state is beyond essential. Para-s N system activation is simply done by not being impressed. "Really Mr.Heart, is that the quickest you can beat? I can tap my fingers quicker then you, what kind of muscle are you, a bone is beating you, cmon, beat faster" Chewing also does a similar phenomena. Ever notice people chewing gum simply don't look like they give a S*** about whats going on? Well, parasympathetic systems go wild when you chew. Your body knows its safe since you wouldn't be eating if a tiger was chasing you. "Death smiles at us, all we can do... is smile back" A nice quote to ponder when you enter the "doom death, leaving body, shaking, stage". If your about to die, its going to happen, smile, you don't want your last few moments to be crying like a child. And what do you know, the panic attack ends. Make anxiety your bitch, and remember, beyond all...your body can sure take a beating.

since i moved to Europe iv'e been getting these heart pains and shortnesses of breath. I went to the Emergency room numerous times to get a blood test, AKG, you name it and they can't find ANYTHING! it came down to the conclusion that i had very strong and recurrent Panic Disorder. i was in the Emergency room just 3 days ago again. it's Horrible, i feel like i am having a heart attack, i feel like my breathing completely stops and that im chocking, i even simulate the infamous heart attack "Left arm pain", i get dizzy too. its really horrible, when i have those attacks, i can't sit down or lay... i have to keep moving or else it starts again. but 3 days ago was the worst, even standing and moving around i couldn't shake it off. the results came back once more perfect. im healthy as a bull, no heart problem! Nothing! not even an allergy! so today i have been looking on youtube and this video was really helpful. i feel great right now, and i think im going to beat it and get rid of this horrible experience. The thing that makes my Panic Disorder worst is that i am a very strong minded person, far from stupid if i may say so and i just wouldn't accept the fact that my mind was playing tricks on me! to me it HAD to be a real sickness because the fact that i didn't have control of something within myself was inconceivable. but retrospecting on how those panic attacks start and the fact that im perfectly healthy only leads me to accepting that somewhere in my subconscious, there was a crack or glitch, and it took a lot for myself to say, Ok, i am not immune to weakness, there are things that i do not control, and i need to understand them in order for me to get rid of them.... its been 2 days since the last attack, ill update this post as time goes. I typically get attacks in the middle of the night. The first time i had a panic attack it was shortly after waking up to go to the bathroom. I'm walking back to bed and my mind was telling me i was going to die. I ended up calling 911 thinking that I was going to pass out.

I can have mine around others ( social) or out of a dead sleep! That one scares the hell out of me! What do you do or anyone do?? Simply accept the rush of adrenaline, it's uncomfortable but it will go away. It's not dangerous and you don't need medication to treat the panic attacks. I mean, this is life changing for me. I was riding a bus to my band festival when a classmate suddenly began having a severe panic attack. I sat with her, gave her water, held her head up, and talked about other topics until the ambulance arrived. Her eyes rolled back at one point so I made her look me in the eyes. Hey guys, I’ve been suffering from health anxiety past 2 years, I’ve got all kind of reassurances. I even tried out meds, it did help me out initially and then I stopped. My anxiety came back with a bang the last two months was horrible I had 7-8 ER visits and with 10 EKGS, dozens of blood tests and CT angiogram it proved that the only thing wrong with me was my head !! I’ve started to accept anxiety as it is. Past 20-25 days the intensity has been less but not gone! I had a small tip for you guys, go out if you are anxious, walk or go to grocery store if it triggers you, let it trigger you, be uncomfortable with it the more you let it be without interfering the faster it goes away. I’m pushing my body to uncomfortable situations, it does give me a great deal of anxiety but I do it anyway! Hope you guys recover soon, praying for you guys !

I think for me the difficulty here is not being entirely sure that it IS an anxiety attack. Certainly there is anxiety, but I feel their may be an underlying medical issue. In my case, it's a sense of difficulty breathing, heaviness of the chest, knotted stomach, etc. Pretty standard -- but even when I'm pretty relaxed, hanging with friends or something, I still feel like my breathing is a bit laboured, and this worsens at night.

I haven't. I've got an appointment with a GI next month. Because breathing was involved, I thought it was heart/lung-related, but I think that was a red herring. I'm often bloated and my guts are uncomfortable if I'm just eaten or am hungry. Antacids don't seem to help. My life has calmed considerably, but this issue persists. So, hopefully I can get some answers.

+Mia Calciano You must recognize that your heart rate is high purely from panic and anxiety. Anxiety disorders don't cause heart attacks. Think about all the times your heart rate has gone to 135. What was the net result? Did anything physical happen to you? Nope. Nothing happens. You must remind yourself that it's not dangerous. Once you accept this, your symptoms will subside. I had times when I had a resting heart rate of over 160. Now my symptoms are gone. If I can do it, you can. I hope this helps

exercise alone can easily get your heart rate that high for a while. Your heart can handle that for awhile but you will not die.

+Mia Calciano During my major panic attacks, my heart rate escalates to around that number, too, and it is scary because this could cause a heart attack. The way to stop this and to calm yourself down is to just close your eyes, take a minute to try to bring your breathing back to normal (you're most likely hyperventilating during your attacks), and just keep thinking things like "I'm having a panic attack, but that's ok. I know I'm not dying, my mind just wants me to believe I am. I just have to accept that I'm having an attack, chill out for a minute, and wait for it to pass." Panic attacks always end, but don't focus on them ending. You can't make them end, because trying to force them to end will make them worse. Just relax and pretend to enjoy them, take note of all the feelings you're having and try to understand them. When the attack ends, you'll be fine, and you'll know what to do when the next one happens. Just be careful to remember this when you have them. They're really scary, and sometimes this can make you freak out when you shouldn't be, so remembering to calm yourself is key to getting through them. Hope this helps :)

+Mia Calciano remind yourself that when you exercise your heart goes up to 180 bpm. so 135 is considered as a moderate workout. the fight or flight system was designed to keep us alive when we face danger. if it was dangerous to us, our ancestors wouldn't have survived and able to run away from lions and bears. they would have had heart attacks if the fight or flight system was dangerous. accept that fact and you will start to realize that it is all in your mind

Watching this video sincerely changed *everything* for me. My anxiety had become so overwhelming that I believed I would never feel normal again. It took all of my energy and will power to get through each work day. The hardest part was having to pretend to be fine when I was falling apart inside. But the idea of being "stuck to the ground" and facing a panic attacked head on was TERRIFYING. But, one day, I was just too d*** tired to fight the attack coming; I accepted it and let it happen. And rather than materializing, the attack literally disintegrated. Like a shudder of adrenaline that ran through my body and then disappeared. It was shocking. A year later, I still feel anxious sensations on occasion but they never last or take over. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this video. ❤️

youve taught yourself to be afraid and to react negatively during your episode. you can teach yourself to not be afraid by learning to react and see the situation differetly in your mind. fear and panic are not your enemy and it will never kill or hurt you. in all honesty, all its trying to do is keep you safe. its giving you the energy and strength you need to run or fight the danger you think your in. youve just confused that in a time of your life where you was to stressed and didnt understand what was happening. but you can change that by changing your perception of fear and how you react to it. just takes some time. face your fears,theyre not even real. just in your mind.

Excellent advice. I've struggled with panic disorder and agoraphobia for 30+ years. It hasn't killed me yet. Been to the ER, had all the testing, etc. I'm still here. Nobody knows what it's like unless you experience it, so when I do I am usually very vocal about it. I tell whomever is around that I'm having one, how to help me, and how not to. I'm 60 years old and I feel that educating others goes a long way in coping with that feeling that I had when I was younger...feeling like a burden or strange, etc. The energy I used trying to hide what I was going through just made the panic more intense. I am not ashamed. We are all extremely strong, intelligent, sensitive people who have gone through hell and back with this disorder. Just because they can't see it, doesn't mean we don't deserve compassion, understanding, and resources to cope and live our lives. This video made sense to me. The feelings that make us feel like we're dying are actually a survival response, brought on by our specific stressors. The one thing I disagree with is the comment about breathing. You may be breathing high up in your chest and not realize, as that is probably second nature to many of us. So a slow, steady breathing technique is crucial to get it under control and stop the other symptoms from multiplying. One of, if not THE, best video I've seen on panic attacks and how to deal with them. Personally, I've dealt with mine by altering my diet and making some lifestyle changes but one of the things that really helped me along the way was this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt "We gain strength, and courage and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face... we must do that which we think we cannot"

First I started slowly eating a more plant-based diet so I ate less meat and dairy and more plant foods. Lots of pasta, rice, potatoes, beans, cereal (rice milk instead of 'normal' milk) fruit, veg etc. After 6 months of doing that, I found I had more energy so yes, I started doing a bit of exercise, walking more and sometimes going for a jog. Just whatever I felt like, I didn't really push myself or try to hard! Anyways, I continued with the dietary changes and moving more and now I'm eating a high carb, low fat plant-based diet (not too strict about it though ;) and my fitness has built up. I've not had a panic attack in over eighteen months. Sorry for the long reply but yes, I did exercise but not until I actually felt like exercising, I was never able to exercise before, it always felt like hard work so I thank the plant-based diet for giving me the energy to actually FEEL like exercising..!

Never had anxiety in my life, until when last year in a period of strong stress i had my first panic attack and i run to the hospital. Since that i had 3 episodes and a few moments of very unconfortable anxiety without a proper attack. What i've learned: sleep deprivation and being tired are my main triggers. Other life problems that might worry me (even if totally unrelated) increase the possibility of an attack, as much as marijuana and alchool in high quantities (a glass of wine doesn't harm me at all). If the three get combined there's the real deal. This video will really help my personal journey in understanding and dealing with attacks. Thanks.

My anxiety is where i always fixate on my body say i workout next day im sore i panic that i have a blood clot. I obsess that i am dying that i have a bad heart or a blod clot. Headaches mean tumor and twinges or cramping is clots and i wake up at night panicking

I've been "dealing " with panic disorder for thirty years. During that time I've gone through numerous behavioral therapy treatments, countless medications, and even been a participant in a world wide clinical study. I think the sooner you deal with anxiety, the better chance of eliminating panic attacks. Do not wait, and push to get a professional to properly help. Having said that, I wonder if the doctor has ever experienced full blown panic attacks that come in wave after wave for hours, with each wave increasing in strength. Uncomfortable is one thing, but immediate soaking of sweat and a heart rate of 140 and choking and numbness and fear and worst of all the severe depersonalization goes far beyond being uncomfortable. There is nothing even close to a depersonalization experience; well, perhaps a "bad LSD trip” is similar. I know I won't die, but the "uncomfortable" feeling is unlike any other negative human experience. It's orders of magnitude worse than anxiety symptoms. In my opinion, once the brain is wired and experiences a feeling or emotion, the memory is there and it's a lot easier to experience again. If the memory could be eliminated, I think that would help a lot in dealing with long term sufferers. Just my two cents worth.

I tried everything as I've suffered from panic attacks for twenty years. I still use all these techniques but medication finally helped. I now live without back to back panic attacks. I know he said no medication but I think in some cases like mine it is totally necessary. The last three years of being on meds and practicing the self talk and relaxation techniques have changed my life. I believe the depression was caused by my panic attacks. I no longer suffer from that deep depression.

I’m a performer on stage and I have had anxiety and panic attacks since I was a child, I’m in my 30s now and I absolutely love performing and I can’t imagine giving it up. I have recently got off medication and my anxiety has been really high. I find it hard enjoying performing when all I’m doing is battling anxiety while performing. I beat it every time but it is very uncomfortable for me. I know that I will get through this. Thank you for sharing this video, it is very hard and lonely even though this is very common.

Your breathing is essential to stopping your panic attack. Since it is much more difficult to stop your thoughts during a panic attack, you have control over your breathing. This has helped me tremendously. Try it, everyone is different but it worked for me.

this is the ONLY thing that has helped me. i put this video on during anxious times like first waking up and during panic attacks. the last two ive had i sat with using this "attitude" and the first was 10 mins, the second was 3mins and over with. got on with my day. whereas before i would go omg i'm dying and completely feed it and it would go on and on. thank you so much. i really wish i could meet with you! i love that you strip the fear from these events and lay it out so simple and straightforward. i think i've also trained myself to know when i hear the start of this video, it's like a clear voice that can get in there amongst the crazy and it brings me back. it reminds my brain somehow. try it if you haven't even if it seems silly.

Anxiety & panic have ruined so many day trips / car rides/ visits to friends/ shopping trips. Apparently it wont hurt you . It just makes you feel like shit 24/7. It makes me cry . Its ruins eveything. It never stops. I cannot accept it. When the attack comes , your irrational brain takes over. Thinking i am going to die is not something you can shrug off that easily.

Be more straightforward about what you're describing and it will help you to overcome it. You can't fight the enemy if you don't know who it is. What's a meltdown? A nuclear meltdown involves a nuclear reactor core, which I presume you don't have. So use less fluffy language and say what you were afraid of happening.. Were you afraid you'd start to sweat profusely in the restaurant? Were you afraid you'd have difficulty breathing? As Dr. Barry said, the symptoms will be uncomfortable but not dangerous i.e. if you walked into the restaurant you wouldn't have died. If you went in and just observed yourself, for example, breathing heavily while there but kept saying to yourself, "this is just a harmless side-effect of my overly-active danger responses but I know it won't harm me" Maybe this helps, maybe not. I'm not a professional....

ZeroSumJ1 demand more from your panic attack. Insist that it makes your heart race faster! I promise you It won't. Decide you are excited by the feeling and ask your heart to beat faster. It will not be able to do so because You will call its bluff and it will subside. When you decide you aren't scared anymore, you unmask the panic for what it really is: a fraud.

I used to have major panic attacks, at least five or six a day, and I was always afraid of them. After about three years, however, I stopped having them. I have no idea why. I had the same amount of stress and depression I'd always had, and I hadn't changed anything about my lifestyle. I just thought they stopped because my brain fixed itself. But just three nights ago they started again, which really freaked me out. Thankfully I had studied panic attacks and panic disorder for years, so I knew what to do when I had it. My mind was making my body feel like it was having a heart attack and a stroke all at once, and I was close to passing out. I didn't let it take full control over me, though, and even though I was afraid of it I forced myself to not be. I logically knew that I wasn't dying, and that what I was feeling was just a manifestation of my brain. Instead of freaking out, I turned on some music, closed my eyes, and tried to even out my breathing (hyperventilation always came with the panic attacks for me, and they usually do for most people, as well). I didn't try to fight my panic attack, but instead I accepted it, and allowed it to happen. If you fight against it, it will only fight back harder and make it worse for you. Just accept it, and tell your brain that you're not afraid and that it's ok for it to panic every now and then. This will help you lessen your fear of them, and also help lessen the physical manifestations of the attacks when you have them. You should know that there is absolutely no cure for a panic disorder, and that panic attacks can happen for literally no reason at all. Mine from three nights ago happened for no reason. I was just playing a game online with some friends, and during the game I started feeling my attack coming on. There was no stresser like there is with an anxiety attack, and there was nothing I was worrying about. I was completely happy and healthy, but it just happened. Just know that these can be random, but that doesn't mean you have to be afraid of them. If they happen in public, say you're talking with friends, continue to talk with your friends. People often times feel like they can't breath during them, but if you can talk you can breath, so you'll know that the feeling of not being able to breath is all mental, not physical, and therefor it is not dangerous.

When the weather is cold, I almost forgot I have social anxiety disorder... Then one day it catches me of guide and maybe for a month or two, I would love through hell of constant panic attack before it stabilize to only social events. In a year, their are at least 2 months I taste.

I feel like I got control over my panic disorder. There’s only agoraphobia I have to work with. I tried to find right tools. And for me it was yoga every day, Outside with the people every day, and of course doctor Harry Barry. And healthy lifestyle. Minimum of stress. No coffee. A lot of water 💧 and yoga minimum 1 hour daily. I feel better now. I can say I’m on the way to embrace my old myself again. I was struggling with panic and anxiety disorder over 10 years. I was having panic attacks on a weekly basis, I quit drinking coffee a little over a year ago and I have since had just two minor panic attacks that I was quickly able to ward off. I now drink tea about three times daily, which has a lot less caffeine in it.Coffee was definitely a anxiety and panic attack trigger in my case.I can also advise that if you are having a severe panic attack that exercise for at least ten minutes or more, like walking or weight lifting, push ups etc. will make it quit.

I’ve had panic attacks for over a year now and they are the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. My counselor basically said it was because of child hood trauma but I don’t know what caused it. I always get panic attacks In the car and they last for about 2-3 mins but they feel like forever. For a while I felt like they were taking over my life but I am learning more about them and it’s helps so much. I will get through this!

Thank you for this video. This is the first advice of this kind I see. I faced Panic attack in all my presentations in my class in the first 2-3 minutes. You are right we should just accept and embarrass it. Every time I practiced breath techniques before presentations, I got more and more nervous and charged. But there were times which I just did nothing and accept it and said like whatever, i do not care what will happen and I though positive, I was better, more comfortable, and ready to present. I will keep this way for the rest of my presentations and just accept it and think positive and will never again practice such stupid many deep breath, push ups, ....etc.

Had 4 very bad attacks in the last 6 months. The racing heartbeat is the worst for me as I feel like its just going to keep getting quicker and quicker until it bursts or collapses. Just knowing there are people out there that understand what I'm going through is a help. I've been to the doc's twice and come away with more questions than answers. They'd just say "its nothing to worry about" and look at me as if I'm wasting their time. Thanks for this video, I'll try and 'stand up to it' next time but probably easier said than done though.

I hear you mate ive had anxiety twice In my life and the first time I had severe chest pain / heart palpitations / numbness loss of breath ect. The best thing is magnesium capsules. Aim for 1000mg untill you get better. Split the dosages evenly during the day. Also stress b complex / a good multivitamin / and good clean diet ( no processed foods ) and exercise.

Amazing advice, and so very true based on my experiences with panic attacks. The more deep breathing and more acknowledgement you give it the worse it gets. Once you acknowledge it and do your best to carry on with what you're doing it goes away a lot faster.

I had a my first intense panic attack last night it was brought on by my growing hypochondria. I could not get off the hamster wheel of obsessively thinking something is/was wrong with me after googling my symptoms of course they give you the worst case scenario which sent my hypochondria into over drive. This video saved me and brought my obsessive thoughts and pounding heart rate back to normalcy. I finally overcame that panic attack and fell right to sleep after watching this. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I wouldn't wish that feeling apon my worst enemy. I will use these techniques in the future and embrace feeling uncomfortable.

Hi Barry, I have been using techniques from Panic Away for the last year with great progress with my anxiety! Thank you for that so much! But I have one specific instance that I could use some advice. I suffer from Panic Attacks mostly due to past trauma and abuse, most often when traveling, and although Panic Away helps to quell the symptoms tremendously, I tend to get an upset stomach to the point where I have to pull over and use the restroom when traveling...even though the panic begins to dissipate, it is difficult to control my physical symptoms of stomach upset once they have started. I completely agree with allowing the anxiety to manifest as it wishes, but when it manifests itself in the form of stomach upset it is a bit harder to handle during travel or when I MUST be somewhere at a certain time...any thoughts or should I just allow it to come up when it needs to and use anti stomach upset medicines to help keep it in check? Thank you in advance! :)

He talks quite a lot of sense and his advice may work for a lot of people. I suffer from manic depression, panic disorder and an overactive mind. This never works for me and had to be sent home from work as had the panic attack from hell. It ruins your life and kills any day of happiness. Only fellow sufferers know what we go through on a day to day basis. I have found no cure so far but am open and thankful for any advice from those who have cured. their extreme panic attacks.

i wish that these doctors would give us people with real anxiety a prescription pad to take care of ourselves. i go to group meetings everyweek drug free and let me tell you its horrible i still have anxiety as bad as always. personally id rather be drugged up and enjoying life rather than being miserable and having to scrape thru life at the lowest level working tiny hours at a shitty job. quit honestly id rather be dead.

The second I heard the sentence "the symptoms of a panic attack are uncomfortable but not dangerous", I immediately felt a huge rock lifted off my shoulders. He mentions how he has people write that phrase down, so I did the same. It's made me feel a whole lot better, and I'm currently undergoing CBT therapy. Here's to having a happier, anxiety free life.

I look in the mirror and get a grip of myself i used to get it real bad a few years ago. Now i have it under control.
