To whoever came to this video, you're on the right track. I have very severe GAD, and only recently started dealing with it. The biggest step that helped me calm my GAD is understanding what it is, why it happens, how the body responds to it and realizing that it does not pose any physical or psychological danger to you. You are not going to die, you are not going to end up in hospital, you are not losing your mind. Remember that. As much as it is extremely uncomfortable, it cannot hurt you. And the more you learn about it, and what triggers your anxiety, the less afraid you become, and the less afraid you become, the less anxious you are. You can do it. It is tough in the beginning, but by using CBT methods, tackling your catastrophic thoughts and realizing that all those fears you have only exist in your head and they are not truths, using exposure therapy and meditation and exercise you will learn to control it in a healthy way. As long as you want to get better and you are willing to put in the work even though you may not see results immediately, You can beat this. Most importantly, remember your anxiety is not evil, it's not harmful, in fact it is the opposite. Your emotional brain tries it's best to protect you, not to harm you. Unfortunately it is sometimes hyperactive, causing it to 'protect' you against non-existent dangers (fears that only exist as thoughts in your head), that is all anxiety is. So don't be hard on yourself. It takes time, but it is completely possible.

Cheers for the video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Patlarny Priceless minutes Principle (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for curing panic attacks minus the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my old buddy Taylor after a lifetime of fighting got cool results with it.

I broke down and cried after watching this video because I’ve been battling this for so long and had absolutely no idea that I was going through it I thought it was just my personality like when he said people with anxiety often struggle making decisions so they don’t make one at all, idk how many times I’ve been inside a gas station looking at snacks trying to decide which one I wanted just standing there for 20-30 minutes just staring because I can’t make up my mind just to turn around and walk out the store empty handed I feel relieved knowing that there is a reason I feel the way I feel.

Zack Williamson zack, you’re not alone dear. I’m 61 years old and a doctor just last week told me I have it. She put me on 5 mg. Buspirone, twice a day. Please find a doctor and get it. In two days it started working. God bless you.🙏🏻❤️

@@MsAquaDaffodil yes that's right and i know how u feel ive had them i know what its like but if you have cognitive behavioural therapy the key is to simply accept them,i know that sounds easier said than done but if you "accept" your thoughts and feelings and realise they are harmless and nothing to worry about they will soon go because eventually they become useless,if you dont realise nothing is wrong you will end up in a never decreasing circle of panic which becomes difficult to break out of,so next time remember accept it,there is nothing wrong and keep,if you can,thinking like that eventually they will go forever because you have broken out of the circle so they will not come back if they do u will not worry=life back to normal,remember accept dont worry and move on.

Mental health issues treated in Britain is a disgrace,i asked my doctor to be referred for CBT therapy and he said there is a too long waiting list,so he gave me all different kinds of tranquilizers i'm stoned most of the time but i'm scared to come off the fckn things.GAD is hell on earth,i hope and pray that other sufferers get all the help they need

Look into Pharma Gaba and Magnesium Gluconate. I refuse to be zombied out on meds and have been seeing a Naturopathic Psychiatrist here in the US. The PG chills me out pretty immediately and moves me out of panic. Anyway, just thought I would share what is working for me. Never know!

There are a few factors in reducing anxiety at home . One plan I found that succeeds in merging these is the Aghy Magic Method (check it out on google) it's the most helpful guide that I have ever seen. look at the unbelievable info .

Thank you so much, Dr. I had GAD, as a child, however, I was diagnosed recently, and it keeps triggering and keeps coming and going back, but mostly it's always the anxiousness and constant worry that's there in my mind. My mind never shuts up its been 27 years.

I've watched Dr Harry Barry's video four times today with interest.. I found what he said to make a lot of sense, and as I watched his video, my acute anxiety attack, started to subside slowly... Sadly I've had another three attacks since then..but thanks to Dr Barry I feel a lot more positive and stronger in myself, and will achieve a life panic free... The feelings are uncomfortable, but you are not in any danger..

Thank you, Dr. Barry. When I feel myself going into panic, I just remind myself that my Amygdala is kicking into overdrive and to just ride it out. It has abbreviated anxiety and panic significantly. Life-changing.

My GAD comes and goes, it gave me a wonderful life as I had a great education and worked in several countries. It comes and goes, especially when I have difficulties but it can disappear and life is great. Now it is back for a while, it will go though. It was in my early childhood as my parents were quite anxious. Very sad, my step-sisters had it too.

Omg my friends in high school used to point out that I sighed all the time and they thought I was depressed. I have a GAD diagnosis and what you said about not being able to take a deep enough breath is so accurate! I’ve never considered that was an anxiety thing, i feel so understood

CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) is a good way to start to get a grip on it and live a normal life. Don’t waste time suffering. Take action and try CBT.

the hardest part for me with GAD everyday is eating, I have almost no appetite for anything because my anxiety is always harnessed in my stomach and i cant put on any weight

God bless this man. He cares enough to explain to people suffering what is going on, i.e. why they have anxiety and the best way to go about getting help, managing the condition, and why. Most doctors are like here is your tranquilizer prescription, bye, see you in a month. It really really helps someone with a health problem to have a doctor explain things to them.

Hi, he might benefit from exposure therapy (ET) that a cognitive behavioral therapist can help with. I found out about ET treatment for my highway driving phobia. I thought I was really crazy and found out that these problems are not uncommon and that there are proven and scientific treatments through exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I ran across a book called Face Your Fears: A Proven Plan to Beat Panic, Anxiety, Phobias, and Obsessions by David F. Tolin. I contacted a CBT to help me and it wasn't overnight but I have made a great deal of progress. I had stopped driving on the highway and was beginning to avoid even smaller streets, but after 7 yrs. of no highway driving due to fear/panic and wanting to avoid the fear, I am back on the highways, at least close to home. What a difference. I don't think I could have done it on my own with the book, and am glad I sought professional help. But the book is what made me aware of what treatment I needed, and that I could be helped, and I've no doubt your son can be helped. I wish you luck in finding it for him. Sorry so long-winded, but I hope this helps and gives some hope.

I found all of this information very very soothing and understandable and am learning that if I reduce my stress and eat right and get sleep and accept the anxiety that I can control to a certain point , and if I do have a panic attack I will survive it and it will go away... ya your here..do your thing and then go away thank you Dr Harry Barry.

Anxiety, in whichever form is literally hell on earth. I’ve tried to fight it for so many years. It’s exhausting to both the mind and body. It always feels like someone placed the world on your shoulders and you can’t move. And then living in a country where mental health and proper medical care is so damn expensive for the average person. Sigh. Waiting for my financial situation to improve so that I can buy this book.

Omg…this describes me perfectly. Ended up with cancer and while recovering as a part of my treatments started receiving cbt. Such hard work after all the years I’ve had GAD, probably since birth….it is not at all easy or rapid for me! But does help!

Taryn Nieves It's not a mental health problem, it's a habbit that you have learned and your brain is used to being anxious. Basically what I did was totally change my life. before I had no college degree and was working in a dead end shop for a living, and one day my anxieties got so bad that I just decided to do EVERYTHING that I ever wanted to do,thus retraining my brain. I now am doing my masters degree in translation I have lived all around the world, I'm married and I work as a freelance translator. You just need to go out and live your life. In fact I'm glad I had terrible anxiety because it pushed me to change myself. there is also something do called the linden method, that's basically what I did. you can google it, it's really good stuff.

Boy if this ain't me!?!! A panic attack brought me here...I was diagnosed with GAD in my early 20s, this doctor first put me on visteril? And later 3 other antidepressants each try ended up making things worse- I stopped taking all meds. It took me many years to recognize the signs before it would come on as well as what could help it stop a little quicker- but now at 34 I have far less often. This is the first one I've had in months, used to have them several times a week. Meditation, being in nature and exercising/breathing deeply help me tremendously. You kind of learn to just live with it somehow.

I can't thank you enough for these tips on dealing with Anxiety throughout all your videos. For a time i was able to control my anxiety but because of adjusting to a new life out of college and dealing with new responsibilities it got to the point where I was having uncontrollable crying fits and feelings of dread every single day. For two days now Xanax felt like the only fix-all for those moments to stop. Thank you. Just thank you. I wish i could give you a hug because you helped me realize that with patience i can overcome this monster. If anything, i need to hug it as well to tell it everything is ok when those episodes happen again. Thank you.

By the way, hard exercise works really well. It is remarkably effective and explains my sporty childhood - now I know why - I was struggling. It is really sad as my parents were the issue but couldn’t see it.

I have a GAD diagnosis myself and have taken SSRI's for many years. As it was explained to me, SSRI's treat symptoms, not the root cause of GAD itself. The Catastrophic thinking patterns, the desire for control at all times and destructive behaviors are at the core of GAD. With Dr. Barry's book, I've made progress and have reduced my Anti-depressant from 15 mg. per day down to 5mg. per day. I've still got a ways to go but, I'm better! (BTW, DON'T stop taking Anti-depressants without medical supervision! You must taper off SSRI's slowly or you may go into withdrawal - which can be VERY unpleasant!)

I am in panic attacks and nobody helps me including my family ignore me and nobody talks me and when I wanna talk them they ignore me and there is no doctor who understand this and I dont know what to do I wanna cry but I can't cry no one helps me otherwise they do our rude behavior I pray God no one suffered this 😔😭🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️

excellent advice Dr Barry. I've been on medication for 17 years with chronic depression and anxiety and after 7 years of talk therapy I'm starting CBT. You've given me hope for the future with your advice. God bless ya!

The meds are too help you cope. They're very helpful when you're overwhelmed. The kinda keep things at bay. But they don't address the problem. Dr. Harry Barry, and the DARE book/app by Barry McDonagh have been extremely helpful in finding a way out. Both present such an incredibly simple explanation and practice. After 40yrs (!) Of dealing with this, it was definitely a "no shit?!" feeling reading the explanation and approach.

I used to get scared and sad, but I've been dealing with this for almost 20 years. Now I tend to get angry and frustrated, but I do worry most about attacks. I used to have them on an all day daily basis. They are pretty seldom now...just when things start getting hectic.

Brilliant.. I grew up with an alcoholic father and a mother who had a personality disorder so now I have anxiety.. And now my son suffers with anxiety the toxic cycle needs to be broken. Its definitely passed down but now that you have made that known hopefully people can take some peace knowing its not someone we are but someone we have become due to our parents. Now it's time to untangle our minds and live in freedom ty doctor x🙏👍

Hit on the head about avoiding jobs, things that need to be done because of the worry of the outcome and just hold off and it builds up. My Problem is having Afib and some hear conditions when the heart will suddenly speed up..and then there's the effect of anxiety and heart racing, difficult.

I got beta blockers to keep my heart rate stable, and it’s really helped. I know my heartbeat isn’t abnormal, and that in itself calms me a lot.

I have it. Just found out this past week. I have it bad. Thank God a doctor finally knew. She put me on buspirone. It’s a miracle. I suggest get on this and then start therapy.

I never knew about this disorder until now, I could never related to the symptoms of people with social anxiety but still felt like I had some sort of anxiety. I get huge amounts of GAD relating to my job or employment in general and it has led me to become depressed as well. I’m glad I found the actual name for the disorder at least.

I'm almost 80 yrs old. Always knew something was wrong with me, didn't know what except a pattern of about every 5 wks I learned to feel it coming on for bout 1 week, each day getting worse day by day till it reached a head. All the worst symptoms lasting 4 another wk. Uncontrollable crying, then another wk, going away a little everyday until the next time. I could never finish anything. I learned not to start anything. I was aware! It has ruined my entire life. Mother was mentally ill and no father. No love. I don't think I know how it feels. My Son also suffered with it. He's dead...

@DrHarryBarry Could you please make a video on someone who has General Anxiety Disorder but specifically the type that have a cold and harsh interaction style. Seemingly they come across as unemotional, devoid of empathy and do not like to talk about feelings. They burn bridges and build walls.. but really they are just protecting themselves. Pushing of buttons to get a reaction etc. And how it can seem they are covertly narcissistic but really it is their anxiety disorder because a lot of people self diagnose and label. And also how this can effect relationships.

I believe i have GAD and i am doing my own self-cbt online to learn and manage my anxiety, soon, i will get the official diagnosis of GAD. CBT saves lives.

I used to get many panic attacks but now been struggling with gad. Constant underlying anxiety. Started after a trauma in January 2020. I can't exercise much right now due to a multiple sclerosis flare. Exercise would help.

Great video. To me it literally feels like a monster jumping on my back when I am distracted and insecure about something. And then it does its magic and augments the insecurity to exorbitant levels, making me see confirmation of the threat everywhere. I can 100% confirm that cbt is a great way to deal with it.

Amazing description of symptoms from a medical/behavioral standpoint. Would greatly appreciate if you could do a video regarding DPDR/mindblankness/mindblindness.There are plenty of KZbinrs capitalizing on the number of people going through an episode of derealization/depersonalization but very few people with any kind of formal background in anxiety treatment. I have GAD and 1 of my symptoms is it feels like theres a ball in my throat that gets bigger, and it feels like I'm choking to breath. I always tell myself it's in my head and itl pass and I'm not dying, my symptoms cant last forever. It sucks with the symptoms and its a hard fight, what's worse is how people dont see it is a big deal and think its somthing you can control.

I have been suffering from GAD for 15 years now ! I was 13 when I noticed it . I am 28 now , I am high functioning. However I am always anxious and it is scary . It’s been times I have cancelled plans with friends just so I wouldn’t freak them or myself out due to anxiety. It breaks my heart because I am a poet , writer, fashion stylist and I dabble into acting and I am suffering tremendously. I hide this mental illness greatly . I get way too excited and anxious about highs and lows in life . Alcohol has helped calm my nerves for 13 years of my life , it’s no longer working . Please someone help me , I want to live and not just exist

Also look into an elimination diet while cutting out sugar, preservative chemicals and processed foods. Sometimes these problems can be caused or worsened by diet and inflammation. I hope some of this helps. All the best to you in your fight.

I wish I could find a good therapist to help me. I approached a cognitive analytical therapist and had an assessment with her, and when I asked her about whether she will be providing me with some strategies and tools to help with my everyday feelings of dread and guilt, she told me to use google. I understand I have a lot of issues that require a psychodynamic approach, but hearing a therapist to whom you just confided saying use google creates a lot of feelings of helplessness.

He explains general anxiety disorder so well. I find that taking a nice warm bath and drinking green tea and medication helps me a lot. Also, finding things to do and practicing cbt has helped me more than anything.

Caffeine is not good for anxiety whatever the amount of caffeine it is, it’s not good for anxiety. Try to quit tea and coffee at all cost.
