Today we look at Homer's plastic surgery and gastric bypass, Homer pinning his skin back from that famous meme, Homer and Bart jumping the Springfield Gorge, Bart injuring his coccyx on a bowling ball, Homer performing CPR on Moe, looking at an eclipse, Grandpa Abe's exploding kidney's and homer providing a transplant, organ transplants on your driver's license, and so much more. Fun fact, one of the reasons Homer survives so many head injuries is because the fluid surrounding his skull is a lot thicker than usual, comparable to a football helmet.

Technically homer did sign off on the kidney transplant. He just ran away before they could start but he never actually told them not to do it. Sounds like a legal gray zone, especially if they didn’t have time for him to wake back up

I love how people always say that ''if they see you are an organ donor in the ER, they won't take good care of you". Having worked in the ER for five years and running over a hundred traumas in that time, I don't even know your first name until we get you stabilized and I actually get to talk to your family. Until then you are either "honey, ma'am, sir, or buddy" to me.

Fun thing about organ donation, here in the Netherlands everyone is registered as an organ donor unless specified otherwise when you turn 16 (or maybe 18 not sure about that one) and there's also an option that you can get your family to decide for you when you died. There's also an option to only donate your body to science if you want to. I think it's an amazing system, to make sure that more organs are available for people who need them. It also makes more people think about what they want to happen with their organs after they die

I fractured my coccyx at 13, and it was one of the worst pains I've ever felt! Happened in gym class, and the teacher told me to just walk it off, it wasn't that bad 🙄 But I couldn't sit straight without screaming in pain. My homeroom teacher sent me over to the office, and they called my mom. Immediately went to the doctor, and guess what? It *was* bad! It fractured, and I had to sit on a rubber donut for two months. I also had to take that time out of gym class, and my teacher was convinced I was being overly dramatic and tried to fail me. She was the WORST. It was because of that injury that I had to stop playing soccer, and that absolutely crushed me. Believe your kids when they tell you something is wrong!

Kinda the same thing, but when I was 14 or 15, I started having spams in my arms where they would twitch and I dropped stuff. My mom shrugged it off until I dropped to the floor in front of her. Turns out I have epilepsy and those were mini seizures (layman's terms)

actually happened to me too. I don't know if it was actually fractured, but now I think so. I fell on the stairs and it hurt for months, but not at the point of not being able to walk (it must have been really really small). it hurt especially when I got up from the chair. I never had it checked out because it wasn't that bad and I believed it was because I was growing

I was on dialysis for 10 years (I'm 36) and finally got my transplant on 10/01/2019 (3 years this Saturday!!) And every single thing Doctor Mike is saying, I've experienced. I was diagnosed with FSGS when I was 19, totally random, no one else in my family had kidney problems. I was actually just talking to someone about my transplant experience and it brought so much joy to my heart! PLEASE take care of your kidneys, people, the best you can!! Dialysis is NOT fun, I missed out on a LOT of life and it's STILL a struggle trying to enjoy it some days, but I'm very grateful.

Yeah, I'm 17 and just recently had a kidney transplant 6 months ago, although I wasn't on dialysis nearly as long as you, dialysis sucks, I even had my time extended by an hour because my kidneys just couldn't do anything, was drinking like a bottle of water like every other day, had no energy for anything, was sleeping all the time, but I finally got the transplant and taking all the pills is a small price to pay for the freedom I have received

Fun fact, in my country everyone is automatically an organ donor. So if someone is in an incident and suffers fatal injuries someone actually gets their organs if there is a need and they are a match.

10:20 in the Netherlands, by default you are a donor. You get a letter at age 18 informing you that you can change that. I personally think that is a good system. ( For context, you aren't considered a donor before the age of 18)

For the solar eclipse one, me and a friend made a mistake of looking directly at it in highschool, if didn't do severe damage to our eyes but we saw reddish splotches for a solid few minutes before our vision went completely back to normal

I went through the same thing in 2010. Repeated anxiety and full blown panic attacks that sent me to the er. I went at least a half dozen times and everything was fine. Heart, lungs... nothing was wrong, physically. It literally was 'all in my head', so to speak. I've suffered from anxiety since 1994 but this was the worst it had ever been. Turns out I was on the wrong medication. I had been DX w depression when I actually had BPII due to untreated ADHD. I'm 49 now and doing much better now that I'm on the correct meds. Anyway, just thought I'd share in hopes it eases your mind in some way. Be well 💛

I actually donated my kidney to my father and when Homer ran away (made me laugh) it was how I felt the whole morning of the operation. I do not regret the operation at all, but I was nervous, “what does this mean for the rest of my life?” “will I be able to take care of my kidney?” “Do I actually want to go through with this?” I was scared and nervous even though every single detail was explained to me. Funny moment, but for some people, that is how we felt. I refuse to tell my parents because that was the gift of life. If he knew my mental state, my father would have refused the surgery, that is just the kinda man he is. “For all of the things he has done do us, I don’t have to think about it, it is the least we can do.” That is what my brother said when my father asked us to CONSIDER donating.

We 100% knew who the heart donor was for my cousin's husband. We have kept in contact with his parents and send pictures of the kids that still have their dad because of their tragedy. They say it has helped them in their grief. Their son was only 17 when he passed, so sad. And it has been 16 years since the transplant

When I was a kid my grandma needed dialysis but the constant need to be in and out of the hospital for it took a huge toll on her. So my grandpa transformed a room in their house into a dialysis center and got trained on how to do it at home. He had a sink installed so everything was done in this clean room. They were together over 50 years at this point and he did everything he could to keep her home as long as possible. After she passed the room became his gardening room. He would sit in his wheelchair at his little table planting seeds, line them up on the shelves by the window and watch them grow. I spent many many years in that room talking and just listening to his stories. As an adult now I can’t even begin to imagine the struggle he went thru to make that room happen, all just to bring my grandma a little happiness and stay together a little longer. It’s too sweet and has always stuck with me.

About 30 years ago a friend of a friend was in a freak accident. The way it was told to me was that he appeared to be brain dead and so “they” started harvesting his organs before he was pronounced dead, and didn’t treat him. This terrified me for many years into not becoming an organ donor. Fortunately, I finally decided that it must’ve been BS and now I am one. Lord only know what actually happened, but these stories do get around.

Definitely was complete bs. The final test for brain death involves taking a patient off ventilation while still supplying oxygen (they sound similar but ventilation is inflating/deflating your lungs while providing oxygen is simply pumping O2 into your lungs oxygen). If your brainstem still has activity, you will metabolize it. If you aren't metabolizing it, you aren't coming back short of a true miracle

When my father passed away the family of the girl who received his corneas in a transplant reached out to us and invited us to a dinner in his honor. Somehow they did know where the corneas came from. I was a teenager at the time so maybe there were some extra steps in the process my mother never shared, but yeah, they knew who we were and thanked us.

In High School, about twenty years ago, we watched a Solar Eclipse for science class. We used special dark thick glass to view it, similar to the type of glass in wielding helmets/goggles. It was cool to see the eclipse that way versus the indirect method with the box. I still think Lunar Eclipses are better because you can see them without needing any protection and they last longer.

There's one where he manages to use just his belly ( _literally_ just his belly..ok, and his mouth if you want to get pedantic) to drink a beer and crush the can. Also, in a halloween episode he's force fed all of the doughnuts in the world and not only does he survive, he demands more when he's on the last 20 or so and relatively speaking doesn't put on that much weight (yeah he gets ridiculously fat but not to the point where he looks like he has eaten all of the doughnuts in the world).

The episode where Grandpa's kidneys blew up has really traumatised me since I watched it as a child. Like, I knew it was a cartoon and that it wouldn't happen like that...but that doesn't mean that one of my kidneys couldn't explode because I didn't go to the toilet quickly enough!!! I still think about it and I'm nearly thirty now.

I read a Katharine Hepburn’s biography, her dad was an urologist, & it didn’t matter if she knew you or not, upon greeting you, she always inquired if you needed to use the restroom. It was her understanding that if you held your bladder, it would stretch, causing wrinkles where bacteria would breed.

I learned in school about Tycho Brahe dying from a bladder explosion from holding his pee too long at a party. It's gone back and forth over the years whether or not it's a myth. Not sure where they are with that one currently.

@@Claubuza I have also heard that, and that is another thing that weighs heavily on my mind as a very anxious person. I remember my mum telling me it when I was younger (but older than when I watched this Simpsons episode) and I refused to believe it until I googled it. Bladders and kidneys can be surprisingly scary if you have a neurotic mindset.

I’ve been a registered organ donor since first getting my drivers license in high school because my parents were so I didn’t think anything of it until my uncle unexpectedly dropped dead mid conversation at work and became a tissue donor and that’s when the reality set in for me about what it really means to help others after you’re gone. Losing my uncle completely unexpectedly was a total shock that was really hard to wrap my head around but knowing that he helped others in the process was comforting so it totally solidified for me why to be an organ donor.

You know what, I would love to see you do an educational video on the different kinds of Kidney desease and the different kinds of dyalisis avalible for those undergoing treatment. This Simpson's episode is a pretty good highlight for the start of such a conversation I think. As someone who's lived in close proximity to a renal patient for most of my life (she is not able to be put on the transplant list for multiple reasons), it amazes me how little the average joe, and even hospital staff actually know and understand what goes into it all. It leads to a lot of missunderstanding when it comes to symptom expression, treatment, and even medicinal avalibility. Hell, where I live, if something happens to this person, the paramedics have to rely on her, myself or my siblings to be able to hook or unhook her from her at home peritoneum dyalisis machine because they dont have the training for it (rural area, nearest renal unit is about a 3 hour drive away, and you can imagine how not ideal this lack of training could be in an emergency situation). I think last time I referred to her dyalisis fluid when telling doctors how it worked, I called it 'Organ soup' and cracked up the doctors at the local hospital. PS. For those interested, 'Organ soup' in this context is from the process of peritoneum dyalisis. Glucos based mixture is pumped into the peritoneal sack, your organs sit in it for anywhere between 4-12 hours, depending on your particular form of treatment, and then is drained out again. The resulting fluid, if there is no infections, comes out looking yellow-ish or clear, like pee, and clear of any floaty bits (if theres floaty bits, your in trouble because you shouldnt have binding protines in your dyalisis fluid). It also smells sweet, but its a weird off sweet that no one really wants to sniff.

As someone who has received two kidney transplants, and whose father, who donated the kidney is still alive almost 40 years later, that line Marge says really pisses me off. The only way in which donating a kidney would shorten your life significantly is if you die in surgery or while healing from surgery. Otherwise, you're less likely to die of renal failure than the general population. Granted, this is probably because the kidney you donate needs to be healthy. BTW, thank you for being an organ donor Dr. Mike. You're a hero for doing so, and for making a video that may encourage some people to donate organs who may not have otherwise. I'm an organ donor too... I just can't donate a kidney for obvious reasons. But, if someone needs a piece of my liver, it should be pristine considering I drank maybe 2 ounces of alcoholic beverages collectively in my life.

One of my favorite memories, my friends and I were driving around Nova Scotia, and we ended up on the hill at cheese factory corner. There was an eclipse going on and this group of older people were there to check it out. Dude let us use his welding mask to look. It was amazing.

I actually got a tailbone injury and I bruised my coccyx pretty bad. I was thrown off my horse and landed bottom first. I have pain if I sit down for more than an hour. Took physical therapy and had electroshock therapy. Took away some of the pain (I used to have pain almost 24/7 if I sat down), but I now only have pain if I sit down for more than an hour.

The coccyx one reminds me of 2nd grade when a girl in our class fell on the concrete stairs as we were all walking outside, and she landed right on her tailbone. The teacher was right by her and almost caught her but missed sadly. She cried so hard and everyone was all quiet and sad, because she was like the nicest girl in the whole class, we felt so bad for her. I think she was okay because she came back the next day and seemed fine, just sore. But it must have hurt a lot, we were all bummed out for the rest of the day. It's a really vivid memory still to this day and I'm 32 now.
