"Being brilliant is NOT enough, young man. You have to work hard. Intelligence is NOT a privilege, it is a gift. You use for the good of all mankind". ~ Doctor Otto Octavius

Hard and troubled pasts are important in a villain’s backstory, Doc Ock is no exception. Marvel really knows how to go in depth with character backstories and they are good at it.

There's another piece of his backstory explored in Spider-Man Unlimited #3 where he falls in love with somebody, and then his widowed mother guilt trips him into believing that he's abandoning her by moving on with his fiance, so her leaves her. Then he finds out that his mother is dating again ater his father's death despite forbidding him, and he unleashes into a furious rage on her causing her to have a heart attack and die.

I feel for Doctor Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus because he has been through harsh and horribly painful life from childhood to teenage years. I really tell everyone this: bullying is evil alongside with hate.

To me, I think that one of the reasons why Otto hates Peter, despite respecting him, is because Pete is kinda like what Otto imagined himself to be. Powerful, intelligent (despite Otto being superiorly smarter than Peter), and resourceful like himself minus Pete’s puns, jokes, and quips as Spider-Man that always got to Otto’s nerves (maybe because when Spidey mocks Ock, he gets flashbacks from him getting bullied). Furthermore, despite Spider-Man sometimes being viewed as a menace by people like JJ, he’s still recognized by many for his accomplishments as a hero who fights for the little man, while Ock deeply wishes that the only person who could recognize his amazing talent for Science was his abusive dad who never did acknowledge his son’s talents and looked down on him because of it.

Peter was able to lead past his pain better than Doc Ock.

Otto can be seen as embodying the sort of person Peter could have been if he allowed his power to go to his head. In a way, Otto is the embodiment of how Peter started out before being Spiderman: selfish, arrogant and only caring about being famous.

This can tie in to how he handles being superior Spider-Man, where he now has the chance to fully explore his dreams as someone he respects and along with his brilliant mind, thanks for the new perspective! Makes me appreciate Ottos character and his time as The Superior Spider-Man

Gotta respect Otto for his dedication to stick to the same hair style for all those years.

My kid reaction: “what a nasty and mean man! Get ‘im, Peter!” My adult reaction: to hug and cry. With so many fictional assholes, from Snape to Skinner, to hug and cry….

You know, in the spectacular Spider-Man episode Doc Ock created, Where Otto is trapped and before he gets zapped (that rhymed) he says “I’ve been good” and the first time I saw that it made me think something happened to this character in the past
