@@keithgardner9537 I understand your optimism and concerns. Being that Brees can be out for 4-6 weeks is possible for a 40 year old to heal from. Relying on Bridgewater and having Payton re-draw up schemes around Teddy isnt easy with so little time. Perhaps maybe not too complex if payton just has him play basic football. Payton has mastered the Art of Brees-ology 108. Thats why the duo has reached an Elite status. I do believe Teddy has the fundamentals on being a great QB. That is if Payton is confident enough to share his secrets. As of now Taysum is his golden ticket. But thanks for your response

This is the same injury I had. I had a complete tear of the UCL of the right thumb. The way Drew described how he could not grip the football is typical of this injury. He also said he has had jammed fingers before but this felt different. That was exactly my experience. I just knew something was wrong even though at the time I did not know anything about the UCL of the thumb. It’s sad to say, but he will probably need surgery. The way he described his pain, the fact that he could not grip the football after, and the way his thumb moved when the doctor did the thumb deflection test all points towards that. That means a cast for at least 3 weeks after surgery and then therapy. But knowing Brees, he will be back before the end of the season. One other note. Because the UCL is so small, sometimes a tear will not show up on an MRI. It did not show up on mine. But the doctor was pretty confident that it was torn and when he went in it was completely torn off the bone. They had to take piece of tendon from my wrist to fuse into the joint. Immediate surgery is probably the quickest route to recovery for Brees. If it is torn, just casting it for 3 weeks is no guarantee of healing and then he is back to ground zero.

@@brandonsylvia6214 I had the reconstruction. Tendon from my wrist grafted in. I guess Brees had the brace done because they say the recovery time is faster. My recovery was 2 weeks soft cast, 3 weeks hard cast, then 2 months of therapy.

I can move the thumb fine. I have pain if I grab a door handle. Hold guitar neck. Tender from middle of inside of thumb and Tender on top of thumb going up arm. Don’t recall any sudden injury except had hair tie on wrist along with Apple Watch that I wear all the time except when charging. Could compression on the ligament cause this?

The moment I saw this and the tests they did, I knew it looked like a UCL injury. Not a doctor or anything, just speaking from personal experience. I was unfortunate enough to completely tear my left thumb's UCL with an avulsion just over a year ago. Needed surgery and was out for 3 months, but I wasn't normal until at least 6 months I'd say in terms of flexibility and strength. I was able to get away with jumping back into activity without actually being 100% because the sport I play doesn't require extensive use of my thumb. But as a quarterback, if Drew Brees does in fact have a UCL tear, that's gonna be a long and hard road. After surgery I couldn't manage to bring my thumb to my index finger let alone grip something until after weeks of being in a brace and undergoing therapy. Even today my thumb still is not the same and I still sport a cool scar. Hopefully it's just a sprain and he gets back to playing soon. He sure looked like he took the pain better than I did.

@Jimmy M....I thought the same thing when I saw the doctors perform the test. I was telling everybody this is a real possibility. Fortunately I only had an avulsion fracture on my non-dominate hand and was back playing baseball in just under three weeks, but I did it during a game and I tried to play through it thinking I just jammed it. It wasn't until I got up to bat and connected on a pitch when I realized something is seriously wrong.

I tore my UCL 6 months ago. I was defending a soccer penalty kick; the ball slammed into my thumb bending it backwards and tearing through all the ligaments. I have since regained some mobility but still is painful daily and I fear I will not regain full use. Do I need surgery?

I never knew how intricate the hand is until I injured my middle finger when I mistakenly severed my tendon with a box cutter. The tip of my finger was completely limp. I think I went into shock by the optics of it all.
