You know what I like about the Onion? The fact that you can make it through an entire article of theirs without seeing a single grammar or spelling mistake. Seriously, I try to read the news when I can on my breaks at work and...ho man. Especially in the last two years, news articles from actual websites are all just filled with grammar and spelling mistakes.

I have not read an Onion article yet but I'm going to after reading your comment! The grammar errors in news articles are so frustrating. The mistakes are really bad too. An example of a common mistake is using the wrong they're, their or there. I found myself wondering 'where have all the editors gone,' and now I know, they all went to work at Onion!

It drives me crazy when legitimate and respectable sources have grammatical errors. If your business is publishing, have a good editor. If your job is writing, proofread your work. It's similar to commercials and ads that are so bad or annoying that I actually hate the product: If you want me to value what you're offering, convince me you know what you're doing.

I started noticing the grammatical errors in newspapers 20 or so years ago. That’s when I also took notice that “feel” was being used when a thought was being expressed. That is so prominent now and it drives me nuts.

But if they pay copyeditors to catch the spelling and grammar errors, then that means slightly less money for the shareholders 🫠 But on a more serious note, newspapers generally (at least in my country, but I assume it's a global phenomenon) have been struggling to earn enough money to stay afloat since the switch to digital and the steady decline in revenue per ad. They might legitimately have had to lay off the copyeditors to keep as many reporters on staff as possible. Which is another reason why I'm glad my country has a national broadcaster that pays journalists to report the news. I'm _very_ happy for my tax dollars to go towards paying for good, independent journalism, since there's such a struggle to stay afloat in the commercial journalism industry. Journalism _shouldn't_ be tied to a profit motive; it should be all about informing the public and shining a light on our institutions to keep them (slightly more) honest!

I love that Dr. Mike brought up how there need to be more pain relief options for gyno visits. All of it hurts (at least for me). They do give some meds sometimes if you ask beforehand, but there needs to be some way to locally numb things if possible. After I had a copper IUD put in, I thought I was ok but then I stood up. Almost passed out. Had cramps for days; bad ones. We shouldn't have to feel that much pain for relatively simple and routine things like pap smears either. I dread every appointment, but I care about my health. It shouldn't be this way.

The difference between a chrysalis and a cocoon is that: A chrysalis is the life stage of a butterfly when it transforms from a caterpillar to a butterfly. A cocoon is the silk casing of a moth that it spins around itself to protect its pupa stage.
@PanthereaLeonis
@PanthereaLeonis 4 ай бұрын
They perform relatively similar purposes though, encasing and protecting the insect while it transforms into its adult stage. My way to tell them apart is that "chrysalis" sounds like "crystal", and is hard. The cocoon, being the other one, is soft and fluffy. Either way, unless you know what you're doing and you got a good reason to, don't touch either, just let them be.

@@PanthereaLeonis Forbidden Secret! Insects that undergo such metamorphic pupation hatch from eggs with _two_ embryos. One stays dormant while the larval stage gathers resources and gets juiceyplump, then it spins up the protective casing and almost fully _liquifies_ in a horrific self-digestion process kicked off by the other embryo, which becomes the adult insect. Which is to say, a caterpillar in a chrysalis is being consumed whole by its evil twin! This has been *Horrors of the Insect World* .

About the chrysalis (3:00 +), when a catherpillar turns into one, it's whole body transforms into a gooey mass. Only realtively long into the metamorphosis process do all the cells re-assemble before the animal cracks the chrysalis and comes out as butterly (or moth). I really don't think that sounds particulary tempting... And yes, of course I know it's satire and I love it, but as an entom,ologist I just just can't help but think how the human in that chrysalis is going to melt like in a body horror movie.... 3:35 high blood cell count caused by smoking/high alt/steroids etc is not called polycythemia vera, instead its being called secondary polychythemia. Main polycythemia or polycythemia vera is usually treated as a blood cancer, caused by mutations in the bone marrow ( jak2), polycythemia vera is not cureable while seconadry can be cured most of the times by eliminating the cause. I feel like its a real important distinction since pv patients go through chemo alot of the time blood lettings and have other health problems including high risk to develop leukemia at more advance stages (or other mpn's)
@SeuOu
@SeuOu 4 ай бұрын
Another important difference is secondary polycythemia doesn't have the same association with negative health outcomes. Read an interesting paper on secondary polycythemia in high altitude populations where there was NO increase in adverse cardiac events compared to the surrounding low altitude communities. Primary polycythemia changes more than just red blood cell count, it also affects the properties of the cells themselves which isn't the case for secondary polycythemia.

Since regular blood letting was too risky and complicated at his age, I had to give him chemo for the rest of his days until the side effects were too much for him and he went across the rainbow bridge. @doctormike..... Got a nair story for you. I was on the high school swim team, and for conference championships we held a "shave down party" where both the mens and womens teams did their shavedowns before the big day. Typical swimming tradition. We had a male swimmer who was Persian and was VERY furry; we even called him "The Persian Rug". Rather than shaving, he said "f*** that, I'll be right back". He leaves the house that was hosting the party, goes to CVS, and gets several bottles of Nair. He then fills a bathrub half-full of wam water, dumps the bottles of Nair into the water, closes the door, and climbs in. The scream that was emitted from the bathroom a few moments later was nothing short of horror-film material. He bursts out of the bathroom, runs naked through the living room to the patio door, flings it open and jumps into the swimming pool in the backyard. The next day, he did the shaving, but the damage was done. He had red chemical burn splotches all over his body, and looked like a nightmare so much so that the opposing swimmers were visibly disturbed by his appearance when he would take off his parka and go up on the blocks for his events. We still give him grief about it to this day, nearly 25 years later.

Industrial hygienist here, ear plugs have a higher Noise Reduction Rating than ear muffs that you see on ground crews at airports.
@PanthereaLeonis
@PanthereaLeonis 4 ай бұрын
So "ear muffs are a thing, but the plugs simply are better at their job". I have had the same experience, that ear muffs just don't work as well. Ear muffs also look really dumb on concerts, compared to the subtle ear plugs, and if you move too violently, you will shake the muffs off of your head and hit your neighbor and spill his beer. They are, on the other hand, much quicker and easier to remove and reapply, you don't risk shoving your ear wax deep into your ear canal, and you can incorporate radios for entertainment or communication into ear muffs that you can't in ear plugs.

The funny or not funny thing is my insurance does not cover anything related to ED. Such as they will cover T level tests for other things, but if it is labeled as for ED, they will deny it. How messed up is that? Just something I learned when chatting with an agent about another issue with an EOB.
@adamcravets5408
@adamcravets5408 4 ай бұрын
WHAT?! An insurance company denies something that every human outside of that company, and most inside that company, think is something that should obviously be covered? No way! On another note of stupidity by insurance companies: My insurance likes to prescribe before diagnosing. I had back pain. So they denied the MRI and required PT. If my pain had been a growth, torn ligament/tendon, cracked vertebra, deep tissue bruise… almost anything other than a pulled muscle, PT would have made it worse.

I will forever be grateful to Dr Mike. My daughter had a post fossa astrocytoma removed two months okay and was recovering at home. I was not very satisfied with her progress so I decided to take her back for a checkup. I stopped in front of the hospital and asked my sister to go grab a wheelchair. I was struggling to get her out of the front seat and realized she stopped breathing. I immediately remembered Dr Mike's advice. So I pointed at my sister and told her to run and get help. I ripped her out of the car placed her on the sidewalk and started chest compressions. I managed to get her breathing, shallow but breathing, before the nurses got there. I truly believe Dr Mike is the reason my daughter is alive. It happened yesterday so I'm crying while typing. But soooo grateful that she's recovering in hospital i shudder to think how bad it could've been❤❤😢😢 Edit to add. Doctor suspects VP shunt might be blocked which might have put to much stress on her already weakened state.

Actually In some industries The area of operation is so loud that you are required to have two layers of ear protection: Internal ear protection (those things you put inside your ears) External ear protection Where one reduces noise with maybe 25 dB, together they reduce noise by maybe 50 dB Also On a different topic People with autism sometimes need to block noise outside Maybe even when talking to others Ear buds can block out noise, yet still be stealthy This can be very beneficial for people on the spectrum
