Sylvester Stallone actually received some major injuries during filming of rocky 4. Dolph hit Sylvester for real into the chest and doctors thought he was hit by a car the damage to his heart and lungs were so bad.

Fun follow up, the insurance company refused to initially pay out for the injury due to the doctors actually thinking he was in a car accident due to the type of injury. And stunt driving wasn't listed on his movie health insurance. They only agreed to pay after the film director showed them the video of him being hit. And fun fact that clip made it into the movie! It's one of the First hits of the fight when Rocky takes a chest/gut punch and kinda curls up

The scene with the chicken. My husband pointed out something outside of physical exercise that the chicken exercise does that other standard exercises won't. Increasing speed, endurance, and muscle is important in boxing but so is strategizing and being able to anticipate movements. Chasing a chicken around allows real time training in that aspect. It exercises the brain he says more so than it does the body in that regard, or rather combines the two with muscle memory movements in regards to certain anticipated movements in order to successfully capture the chicken or in the ring, defeat his opponents. They always like to say there is method to the madness lolol.

Interesting fact: the introduction of boxing gloves have had a huge negative impact on the number of deaths and injuries in boxing (as opposed to bare-knuckle boxing) because fighters are able to punch and punch and punch without hurting their hands.
@Groundlord
@Groundlord 2 жыл бұрын
Precisely. The human body naturally limits itself to avoid self-harm, so any time you punch without the extra padding (or the training to negate that limit) you're going to be subconsciously pulling that punch. Once the gloves are on, though? Your subconscious limiters get reduced since you're thinking "Sweet, now I don't have to worry about injuring myself," and you end up punching *harder* as a result.

It's just cool to think about an actor who is so dedicated to his craft that he was willing to actually square up with a professional fighter who fought at heavyweight and won light heavyweight and cruiserweight world titles. I have always wondered if some people are just genetically gifted in that area. Granted, Rocky is fictional, but take someone like George Foreman. Never the quickest fighter, but could always take punch after punch after punch with much less effect than most boxers. And to this day he doesn't seem the least bit affected by it. It has to be genetic, right?

@@MiddleAgedBob Dude named every one of his sons 'George' - I wouldn't say he's unaffected by it. ;) Seriously though, we know the science - literally every time you get punched in the head it's a brain injury. The most significant factor in CTE seems to be repeated sub-concussive impacts, not a few major ones. I.e., it's literally every punch to the head (or every collision in football or even every header in soccer - pro soccer players show a lot of CTE). Yeah, there's certain to be some people less predisposed to the injury, or less predisposed to developing Tau protein build up, or less predisposed to tau proteins causing cognitive dysfunction - but anatomy is anatomy and physics is physics: bop the head around, the brain is going to bounce inside the skull. There's no way around that (at least until *massive* advances in biotechnology).

Another life lesson: I hope that Mike realizes that the rationale about boxers choosing to accept the risks associated with head trauma also applies to people using potentially dangerous drugs. He bristled recently at Ryan Marino’s suggestion of legalizing *all* drugs, but it’s the same concept: you can choose to smoke, drink and box. There’s no drug he mentioned which kills more people than cigarettes, so let adults decide for themselves.

I'm sure someone has pointed this out already, but oh well. The scene when Rocky is punching the side of beef, and Paulie says "You're breaking the ribs!" is foreshadowing. 10:35 When Stallone was making Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6), one of the things fans asked him was how he'd be able to box again after having that diagnosis. My absolute favorite movie series of all time. I know it's not medically accurate but it's all about the story and what he's been through to get where he's at. The true heart of a fighter. His last line in Rocky 6 is more so referring to life. When life knocks you down, you've got two choices: stay down or get the hell back up. I watched these movies with my daddy who has passed away and I feel that quote in my soul. But if you take that quote literally when referred to boxing then yes, you are not supposed to get hit essentially lol.

I’ve heard of a different type of “blood doping”. Some athletes go live (and maybe train) in the mountains, where air is rarer. It forces the body to produce more red blood cells to increase oxygen transport efficiency. Then they come back down to compete in sports with that advantage, without having to take drugs that might show up on tests.

You are a Rocky fan, Dr. Mike!? I like you even more now. This character changed my life. I went from a skinny kid with pectus excavatum carrying around a rescue inhaler to an amateur boxer and later a certified personal trainer thanks to Sly in general and Rocky in particular. Thanks, Sly, for the incredible motivation. 💪😎

Something that always impressed me was that it genuinely looks like Sly is doing all this work. So many movies these days have a stunt double or some kind of jump cut. You never know if the actor can actually do the things the movie shows.

So much of Rocky's training is accurate for the time period and beyond. Raw eggs are protein, build muscles. Punching raw meat toughens your knuckles. Slapping during sit ups get you used to getting hit. I like your vids Dr Mike, but, any dr would say, don't get hit, don't do this, don't do that. I studied martial arts in the 80s-90s, and did alot of things to toughen my body that Drs would not recommend. 60 years old, and can do alot of things my contemporaries cannot.

OMG, that eye cut scene!! I saw this in the theater when I was 10 and it freaked me out, and then I asked my mom what was actually going on, and I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t look at this. This fight in the original Rocky should have been stopped way before the last round, in my opinion.

So the thing about getting hit or tanking a little in other fighting sports is, on a national fighter level ain't no one prepared for that. I've seen those Athletes training with some "harder" dudes getting really worked up because they lead by points but there knockout hits didnt seem to do anything.

When that guy mentioned the AMA'S new report saying boxing should be banned he asked Rocky if he agreed with the doctors... ... Rocky jokingly responded "yeah, absolutely, I think doctors should never fight" he didn't say "the doctors told me to stop fighting". I cant believe this got past everyone involved in making this video, especially with Dr. Mike going on and on about it 😃. I'm going to listen to it one more time to be sure, but I know I'm right. Edit = I changed what I wrote Rocky saying to the reporter so it would be correct. If I caught and am letting him know about his mistake (I know this won't be read) I best make sure I'm not making one too because then I'll look like a complete idiot, when I am in fact only half an idiot.
