If I remember correctly they discuss in Rambo 3 the “it all depends on who gets labeled terrorist” issue. Alotta people don’t realize the original first blood film was depicting abusive police causing ptsd on a returning Vietnam vet. The Rambo movies weren’t really about America rah rah. They were telling a story about the challenges faced by Vietnam vets.

Douglas Adams' 2 stories for this show really fit in with the love of nature/the environment/animals that reached its apex with Last Chance to See. Can't recommend that book enough, since it mixes his humor so well with the sheer awe & appreciation of the animals he seeks out. It's a reminder that Adams was a lot more than "42".

There was one other children's show you forgot to mention that debut in 1988. Hey Vern! It's Ernest! Despite winning an Emmy (compared to Dusty's Treehouse's eight), it was Garfield and Friends that prevented it from ever having a second season as they wanted to expand it from 30 minutes to an hour long program. And what about Fun House, The Dr. Fad Show, and Out Of This World?

I'm so glad that this was a positive review! I LOVED Doctor Snuggles when I was little. I've spent more of my adult life than I care to mention, scouring antique shops, looking for a duck handled umbrella, like the one that he has. I used to have a book with several of the stories in it. It came with a "read-along" cassette tape, narrated by John Craven. Not sure if the audio is available anywhere to listen to....

I do not remember this show basically at all, EXCEPT for that pocket-watch for some reason. Also I'm fairly sure the medical doctor has a cobra because it is supposed to evoke a caduceus (a symbol of medicine depicting a staff wrapped with two snakes coiled around it and facing each-other).
@AarowSwift4 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, the Caduceus staff, or staff of Hermes with the two serpents twined around a winged rod doesn't have anything to do with medicine. It's the staff of commerce, negotiation, and various other things. The rod of Asclepius which is a simple stick with one serpent twined around it is actually the symbol for healing and medicine. You mostly see the wrong symbol used in the United States and I'm not sure where the mix up started. Of course, with our for profit medical system here, maybe the staff of commerce is more appropriate after all.

I remember watching Dr. Snuggles before it ever debuted on Nick--in the early-to-mid eighties. I think I do remember it being on HBO, but I also believe it was on WPIX Channel 11, a New York syndication station that we started getting when we got cable. And I could have sworn that there were a couple of episodes with an entirely different voice track, without Ustinov and company, where everyone had American accents. IIRC, it sounded newer than the Ustinov voice track...as if they'd re-dubbed a few episodes with a newer track. (In fact, I think I remember seeing one episode with two different voice tracks...it may have been that they showed one on HBO and one on Channel 11.)

I always found this a weird choice for a children's character. It's like it was accidentally designed to turn off anyone over the age of 3. I'll be interested in seeing how he tackles that. Landing Looney Tunes was certainly a major "get" for Nick (even as a little kid when they announced that they'd acquired the show, I saw it as "big" in a big-picture, adult, business sense) and the story behind its switch from the Turner networks to Nick might prove interesting. On the other hand...in the Star Trek episode he remarked that it was a franchise that almost needed no introduction, and the same is certainly true of Looney Tunes. Doing an all-encompassing history of Warner Bros. animation seems almost outside the scope of the channel and more worthy of an entire Nick Knacks-esque series in its own right. It'll be a tricky balancing act in giving us pertinent info while not making an episode that's 2 hours long.

“Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon” began the same year as “The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show” was in its second season on ABC and other local stations like WWOR-TV (channel 9) ran the pre-48 and a handful of post-48 WB cartoons to the channel and the godawful redrawn “Looney Tunes” shorts from 1936-43 since it was originally in black & white after it moved from WNYW-TV (channel 5) since it had been running WB cartoons for years when it was WNEW-TV. And also, “Steampipe Alley”, hosted by Mario Cantoine also premiered that same year on WWOR-TV and it was one of the last of the local kids shows where it features a variety of skits, games, and throwing in a WB cartoon during each segments. The last segment featured a game show segment and a obstacle course that kinda ripped off “Double Dare”. “Steampipe Alley” was a great show, and it was on Sunday mornings at 10 AM. I do not remember this AT ALL. I must have switched to PBS before this came on.

While I remember watching most of the shows of Nick Jr., eventhough I was just out that age range, I was 7 going on 8 at the time, I don't remember seeing Dr. Snuggles. While it looks like it has charm, I would think the fact that everything thing is alive and has a face might freak out little kids. Though, it does remind of old Fleischer cartoons of the 30's and 40's in the 'everything has a face' regard.

The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh did not air on the Disney Channel. It was a Saturday morning cartoon on ABC.

It premiered on the Disney Channel first in January of 1988, and then started airing on ABC in September of that year.
