What a lot of people don't appreciate about this climax is the character growth that Dr. Strange showed in this scene. At the beginning of the movie he feared failure above all else. He was the premiere neurosurgeon but he turned down a desperate patient because he didn't want to ruin his perfect record. Here he sets himself up for failure again and again and again in an effort to save others.

I suspect that part of the magical bargain Strange has engineered with the infinity stone is designed to force Dormammu to keep his end of the deal. Those "deep mystical spells" always have all sorts of nasty consequences and side effects waiting to bite you if you try to renege on your part of the deal. A being like Dormammu, conqueror and destroyer of worlds... I cannot imagine that something like mere cheating or betrayal would be beneath him. He dare not break his word. Strange may be a mere mortal. But an infinity stone? Best not to press your luck!

I was absolutely NOT expecting this to be one of my favorite MCU movies. It started out too similar to Iron Man (arrogant genius has his old, comfortable way of life taken from him and starts down a path of redemption) but eventually morphed into something radically different. The mysticism had an eye-catching, otherworldly feel, then this scene put it WAY over the top. When he walked right into an all-powerful interdimensional demon's realm and both outsmarted and mentally outlasted him to the point the demon had no choice but to rage quit, I knew Dr. Strange was a hero unlike any other. And big props to Feige, Derrickson, Spaihts, and Cargill for the sheer creativity.

You know, I wonder how many people put together how much Strange himself got from this Bargain. Yes, awesome character growth, absolute hero status, but he also got to train in his arts, for who knows how long, only increasing his skill and speed in the mystic arts against a god. That might explain why he was able to go toe to toe with Thanos, who had 4 infinity gems, for as long as he did. This was back when Marvel was doing amazing story telling that actually went somewhere. Here's hoping they can manage to recapture some of that later on down the line.

Apparently Steven was supposed to have died 1000 times in that loop. Assuming each death took approximately 30 seconds (judging by the clip), Doctor Strange spent about 8 hours in that time loop. For being an eternal creature, Dormammu broke pretty quickly, relatively speaking.

According to the comics, That Time loop lasted Thousands of Years So by cosmic(and Comic) standards, Dormammu snapped as fast as someone spending several years in Solitary Confinement alone with no one but a voice in his head driving him mad Film-wise, we can assume he spent a similar amount of time to the comics, but should yours be true, he snapped quick because he was no longer in control of something, and that stung his ego deeply

Many supernatural beings are bound by their word. A bargain made is honored. They are also fond of 'exact words'. Dormammu agreed to end his assault on Strange's world and never return.
