The avengers tower was not yet built by Iron Man 2. Pretty sure Dr Strange takes place right after the events of Civil War.

I think we're to assume Strange takes place over the course of a few Marvel movies. Doc's accident takes place during IM2, then over the next new years he recovers, loses his money, hunts down the Ancient One & trains. Ancient One's death and the end of the movie take place before the end of Avengers 2. Mid credits-sequence could be anytime after that, but since it's a scene from Ragnarok It probably takes place most recently.

I had a theory that the comic book writers were paying tribute to Sherlock Holmes when they created the address to Sanctum Sanctorum. 177A Bleeker Street is way to much like 221B Baker Street (Sherlock Holmes' residence). I mean 177 is 221 upside down and Bleeker Street is a real life street here in New York just like Baker Street is a real life street in London. ;)

Update; Just discovered that it turns out the Sanctum Sanctorum address is just a wild coincidence but at the same time it's not. I found out that 177A Bleeker Street is the street that the writers of Doctor Strange, Roy Thomas and Gary Friedrich use to live in here in New York back in the day. Oops. But it is still so wild that 221B Backer Street and 177A Bleeker Street are both real life addresses. The Universe must really love Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Strange and Benedict Cumberbatch. In the beginning of the movie they show an award with '2016' on it, meaning that it's set at least in the present day. The reference from the car phone call was to Rhodey from the events of Civil War in which we are DEFINITELY told he suffers a spinal cord injury. As others have said the Avengers Tower that shows up would be from at least the time of Age Of Ultron. The reason they don't talk about the "Incident" is because it happened four years ago, it wouldn't be the only thing anyone talked about. That would be like going to real-life New York and expecting every single person to make reference to 9/11 in every conversation regardless of how relevant it is.

Here's more easter eggs you missed: In the movie, Strange's cape is red. This is the same color that his cape is in the comics. Another brilliant reference: In the film, Doctor Strange is seen driving a car. This is faithful to the comics, where he has also driven a car at least once. More: In the movie Doctor Strange and most other characters breath oxygen to stay alive - JUST LIKE IN THE COMICS.

The thing is, if you look closely at the Avengers Tower, you will see that it is Avengers tower, as in the Age of Ultron version, not Stark Tower from the first Avengers movie. And plus, that guy in the suit didn't crush his legs, he twisted his spine. What happened to Rhodey is much more similar to what the guy on the phone was describing.

Also, in the Civil War promotion video here in KZbin (using WHiH World News channe)l, a obviously fictional TV channel that exists in the Marvel universe (with Christine Everhart, AKA the reporter that Tony Stark had sex with in the first Iron Man), the caption beneath the discussion on the Avengers talk about Doctor Stephen Strange discovering a new form of treatment for a unspecified illness. Since the ''news'' takes place during the events of Civil War, it's clear that Strange was still a doctor in during that time. And yes, those reports are part of the MCU, they even use a MCU character(and yes, the same character, not just the same actress), MCU events and they are even have a verified account (because the KZbin channel is owned by Marvel and they verified the account so that fans now that all the ''news'' there are legit. I don't know exactly which video, but it's one of the ones where they discuss Lagos (there are just some 8 short videos in the channel, just look for the Strange reference in the end of one of them)

I feel like they were referring to Rodey in the car crash scene, since Dr. Strange is shown earlier with a certificate of some sort that he earned in 2016, while Iron Man 2 is officially set in 2010 in the MCU timeline. Also, as everyone has mentioned multiple times, Avengers tower would not exist during Iron Man 2, in fact Stark Tower had just begun construction as construction is officially over two years later during the Avengers. So how how I've figured this movie goes, it starts in May of 2016 right near the tail end of Civil War. Given the fact that Kaecilius isn't able to conjure Dormammu during Doctor Strange's training, Strange probably begins his training around August of 2016 and finishes around November 2016 to February 2017.

There are a few mistakes in this video that I need to talk about. The first issue with this video is that Doctor Strange did not take place around Iron Man 2 due to there being an Avenger Tower. The Avenger Tower was Constructed at the end of The Avengers in 2012 which can be seen at the end of the movie, and even if Doctor Strange took place around Iron Man 2 Marvel would not make such a big mistake as having the Avenger Tower be visible because it had not yet been created in the MCU. The second issue is that The Eye Of Agamotto is not an Easter Egg, The Eye Of Agamotto is an object used throughout the movie as seen in trailers and movie pictures and this was just one of the more embarrassing moments of this video. The third issue is about the Costumes, the costumes are also not an Easter Egg or a Reference to the comics at all they are the costumes themselves. Imagine Doctor Strange playing the whole movie in a bikini, the Costumes are from the comics yes, but so is every other costume in the MCU making this a false statement in this video. The Cloak Of Levitation is also not an Easter Egg and it fits into the costumes area making this part of the video worthless. These are the biggest issues with this video and I am sure that there were a lot more issues but I am not going to spend the time to pick the whole video apart when there are much better things I could be doing with my life.

If you Google the address, you can see the building and the entry panel with all the different living spaces. It's a walk-up, and the brass on the panel is *very* shiny around one button. The airforce man with a broken spine is definitely Colonel Rhodes and not the guy from Iron Man 2. Stark Tower didn't become Avengers' Tower until after the Avengers. If this was taking place at the time of Iron Man 2 there would be no big A on the tower.

Also, it wasn't a Sherlock reference. Dr. Strange definitely takes place in present day 2016. In winter soldier, hydra knew about Stephen Strange being a threat because of Zola's algorithm that predicts the future behaviors of people. He was the world's best surgeon, so a threat to hydra if he's not aligned to them. Scott Derrickson said the movie leads up to present day in an interview. It takes place over the course of a year, so Dr.Strange is a quick learner.
