He is a C-list. The thing is, Marvel has turned their B-list into A-list characters. Their A-list they sold the rights to (Spider-Man and X-Men). Iron Man, Thor, etc. were all B-listers in the comics until 2008. Strange is impressive because they are taking a C-list character and probably launching him straight to A-list in one movie.

Strange is only B or C list in appearances.. Because if he appeared all the time they called him he would take out the threat by himself.. He is waay overpowered and in the comics he is even more insanely overpowered.. He easily beats Thor and can neutralize Hulk quick.. He's waay nerfed in the movies but I guess infinity war kind of fixed that.. But he's still waay nerfed in comparison to the comics. In the civil war comic he goes pacifist and doesn't even join a side.. Of course writers had to do that because if he did join the fight, the side he joined would've easily won. The same way Hulk and the The thing didn't fight because the comic writers knew it would've been harder to explain why did the side they joined didn't win.. Also in secret wars he's what keeps God Doom in power and once he betrays him Doom's downfall starts. That's why he's B or C list, he's just way to powerful to appear all the time.

The B list- C list characters work so well because they are not beloved by the whole world already and you can pretty much do whatever you want with them. The movies that people always bug out about them not getting it right are the A list ones. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man. The big 3. Everyone is so in love with their own version of them and it makes it hard to do a movie for the masses. Iron man, captain America, etc.. were b listers before the movies, so they basically could do whatever they want with them. Wait until it comes time for Avengers characters reboots. 10 years or so from now, people will all be like "you did it wrong!" "It's too dark". It's too comic booky" it's too... whatever. "It's not enough... whatever".

I don't think the Marvel villains are weak. I just think there are different levels of threat out there. If they every villain OP then what is the point of setting up Thanos? I believe that when comes to the big screen it'll all make sense.

I feel most of them are weak as in character development, memorability, and/or overall presence, not power level. Loki, Ultron, Hela, Bucky, and Ben Kingsley's Mandarin are the good examples, imo.

_Doctor Strange's_ good, but...not great. It relied too much on flashy CGI and there was too much boring exposition. That said, 90% of the cast gave good performances and the 3rd Act was creative. It's a very fun movie. (A *Full Price* for me)

I don't think so. Directors working on big budget superhero movies have their creativity restricted, and they have to obey the studio formula. They are mainly hired because they are cheap and are less likely to disobey the studio's orders.

The flaws are so annoying because they could be very easily fixed and if they were, this would have been so fucking great. Corporate fuckery really is what kept it from being so :( Still LOVED this movie though, haven't had that much fun and visual stimulation at the cinema since Guardians or Kingsman. Will probably go see it again. Too bad I can't see it in IMAX in my shithole of a city.

Ironic that one of the flaws led to another flaw: the restricted run time made them resort to a lot of exposition dialogue. Exposition dialogues are a big pet peeve of mine in movies and tv shows, and the thing that annoyed me the most on this one.
@paradoxacres1063
@paradoxacres1063 8 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There was way too much dull exposition in this; it almost made the magical stuff feel less cool to watch. (Almost) For the first time I find myself wishing a movie was 20 minutes longer because the characters (Strange, Dr. Palmer, Mordo, Ancient One) were all so compelling & sympathetic.

With respect to Carlyle, it's whitewashing by default. Eastern mysticism, western figurehead twice over. With respect to Tilda Swinton, she delivers the film's best, most nuanced performance. Strange is a decent Marvel movie, but it won't be remembered or revered like TGOTG, Ant Man, or the Cap films. The Marvel formula and reliance on special effects was both the film's strength and weakness. The character of Strange had more depths to plumb.

It was good, but the pacing felt too rapid. It felt like a 150-min movie condensed into 120. While Bay/Snyder blockbusters feel needlessly overlong, this one could've really benefitted from being longer. And, of course, the Marvel movies continue their tradition of having weak villains.

Once again the biggest problem with this movie is the villain. Dormammu is awesome, Mascara man is not. Would have been way cooler if Dormammu took the guys body and morphed it into his physical form that he takes some times in the comics and they were running from/fighting that the whole movie. Hell, just rip-off Marvel vs. Capcom's design. The effects were something else though. This was one of the few movies I recommend seeing in Imax and 3D if you can. Corey also missed the point of the entire movie. "He became a surgeon to help people". No he didn't. That was his whole fucking character arc that he had to learn that it wasn't about him.

I don't think it's fair to put the movie at fault or talk about corporate stuff when the whole idea of the movie is to introduce us to this hero with a very dense mythology and introduce to a whole new corner of the MCU. Just by being an origin story, there's certain things that must be done eg, compromising time for the villain.

People complain about structural formula, but Bats v. Supes is the farthest from a standard superhero formula movie and people HATE it. Every one argues how it's bad, but it's not. I definitely understand why people don't enjoy it, but it's such a depthful story, tells a very inspirational mythology and it strays far from any superhero movie I've seen. I notice that nearly every movie to break the formula of its genre is always the most hated: So even though I don't agree with it, I see what corporations stick with their "safety net". And I'm honestly surprised it took this many MCU movies to realize how strong this formula is haha
@paradoxacres1063
@paradoxacres1063 8 жыл бұрын
Having a standard formula isn't automatically a bad thing. It's not what you do, it's _how_ you do it that matters. _Batman v Superman_ may not have had a standard formula, but...that doesn't mean it managed to execute its story very well, either. BvS had some good ideas but the execution was terrible. _Doctor Strange_ plays it safe but the execution was good.
@brycei95
@brycei95 8 жыл бұрын
Paradox Acres No, I don't think a formula is necessarily bad, but I don't have interest in a movie where I know exactly how it will play out. I felt Civil War was formulaic and executed pretty poorly but everyone calls blasphemy when I say so. And even though it was incredibly long, 3 hours, I felt like Bats v Supes gave every detail needed to understand the story and the psychology of its characters. I watched BvS about 5 times now, I like it more and more each time and catch lines and details I missed from before. The more I watch Civil War, the more holes I find in the story and more pointless the movie feels, and the more I watch it the more I don't enjoy it. I'm not saying D.C. is better than Marvel, in terms of movies, and I'm not saying the opposite. These are just two movies I see people argue about, in which I share the exact opposite opinion with the masses. I just see a repeated formula in MCU, which I find boring, while I see much less limited potential in the current DCCU movies I've seen.
@paradoxacres1063
@paradoxacres1063 8 жыл бұрын
+TheFearl95 Trust me, if DCEU had as many films as the MCU then _they_ would have their own "standard formula", too ;) On the whole BvS and _Civil War_ comparison: I thought BvS was the weaker film. Call me a Marvel fanboy all you want, but...I'm as disappointed as anyone else that the film's not very good because I'm _huge_ fan of Zack Snyder. And BvS is Snyder's weakest film to date. The sad thing about BvS is that it doesn't actually need to be almost 3 hours long: the story's so simple yet the movie takes forever to get anywhere. And none of the characters had good or clear motivations throughout the whole film. I dunno. I felt BvS was as predictable as any MCU film....just nowhere near as fun. As a Zack Snyder fanboy, I felt BvS was a watered-down version of his _Watchmen_ film.
@brycei95
@brycei95 8 жыл бұрын
Paradox Acres I did really enjoy Watchmen, and even though I always hated Superman, I loved Man of Steel and thought his version of the character was flawed and approachable and interesting. And as far as BvS, there are sooo many scenes where the characters sit down, have a conversation and just SPEW plot development haha Similar to The Dark Knight where Alfred would go off on his metaphorical story comparisons. I get why people love Civil War, I do, and I get why people may not like BvS, but I think to say it's unclear in terms of characters or plot is wrong. Are people confused about Batman's arc? Yes. Is it explained in the movie? Of course, it's all in the film. But could Zach have explored it BETTER, giving a clear understanding of the plot to the mass audience? Of course he could. And with the backlash of the movie, he probably should. And we live in a world where people will sit down for 8 hours a day and watch countless episodes of the walking dead, people even binge whole seasons, they LOVE it. But because superhero movies don't normally play out with so much exposition, with so much information at a long runtime, I think people aren't use to that. I think people just enjoy Marvel movies better. In my honest opinion, I think Man of Steel and BvS is better than a lot of Marvel movies, can't say all, but a good handful. But that's just my opinion. I believe if the characters in Bats v Supes were switched with completely original characters and beings, people would like the movie. I stand by it having a great story with good development, but no one has to agree. And no one does haha So I'm use to it

+Paradox Acres but Doctor Strange literally can't not play it "safe" in terms of structure. It's an origin story for a character with a very dense mythology.

I like it slightly more than Civil War. It's a lower-high tier Marvel film. Above Age of Ultron, Thor, ect. but below Winter Soldier, Ironman.

Dr.Strange is a B hero because if he appeared or all got called all the time he could take out the threat in an instant by himself.. He is overpowered as fuck.. Of course in the comics he's just insanely powered and in the civil war comic he sits out the fight, the comic did it in a cheap way but that was because if he didn't sit it out the side he would've joined would instantly win..

And I agree, they moved very fast with this origin story. That's my biggest issue, but almost a nitpick.

They wrote 3 types of villains in this movie & they are the way they are for a reason. I guess he was bad for a standalone film but it's clear what marvels setting up, I like the villain

Same people complaining that they don't spend enough time with the origin are the same people that will complain about seeing another long drawn out origin story. I thought the pace was fine. I don't want to learn about Dr Strange's mundane pre magic life. Lets just get down to what we paid money for.

C Wilson Strange wouldn't be on the map as a potential threat then. He's a neural surgeon he was brilliant as saving lives without a dent on his surgical record lol. Really, you should not have pressed reply if you weren't gonna think that through.

C Wilson Bitch? Lol what are you a teenage girl? Sitwell said Zola's algorithm was a program that chooses Insight's targets. If he was too smart for HYDRA why didn't Tony Stark's name come up? He's smart too. Steven Strange? Bruce Banner? High School Valedictorian in Iowa? Actually you could be onto something lol

C Wilson I just can't believe you do"your mom" jokes still, it's 2016 dude get creative. Also what MAN talks to his mum about all he sleeps with especially on the side. You're coming off like a teenage girl. It seems like you're projecting too, you keep talking about men and being gay. Dude fess up if you really are homosexual you won't be judged.

I got fatigue for these movies around avengers 2 and i nearly stopped caring about this genre with Civil War. Civil War to me, was so unenjoyable that I dont even want to see this movie, I'm purely waiting for spiderman homecoming by this point and if THAT movie cant reinvigorate the series, then i'll just wait for deadpool or the batman movie.

It was great! Seriously Benedict is perfect as Stephen Strange! And I see him like this in Comic and it was cool that they are bringing him to eventually team up with Thor Widow and Hulk and them for the next Avengers Film?! its pretty cool! Like the ending how he finally excepts his Destiny! Dynamite Mordo may become a a bad guy as in the continuing Cot-unity of the comic story lines it was hinted very well towards the ending! When he said he can not walk this path any Further?! Wow! you already what is going to happen Mordo! otherwise great orgin movie for strange!

It wasn't the whitewashing that people have a problem with. It's the fact that they portrayed a Tibetan character as white because it would have offended the Chinese audience. Frustrating and extremely cynical, yes. Racist, no.

they are apart of the Austin film association or some shit like that. Film critics always get screenings. Just make a channel, write a blog, get alot of views and subs and you can get free films too.
