What you want to say is "the previous 26 seasons of the classic era are still part of the continuity." I know this is a tough nut for many fans to swallow but Doctor Who has no canon, meaning there is no rule book, or show bible, to get in the way of the storytelling. That's why not everything makes sense in terms of previous events or statements in relation to later developments.

Police boxes were sort of miniature auxiliary police stations. The phone would allow people to contact the police directly or for police to contact HQ (since they didn't have portable radios yet) while the interior of the box would allow patrolling police officers to hold arrested people temporarily until they could be escorted to the proper police station. They were becoming outdated by the time the original Doctor Who started in 1963 though they were still being used until the early 70s. They were first installed in the 1920s which means that this style has been known as the Tardis for quite a bit longer than they were functional police boxes (there were several designs, but I think this was the most common).

And to correlate it to the modern day, and to a more American experience, I would compare it to the blue light system with call boxes indicated by a blue light that are used to connect to the police in case of an emergency (like being stalked or chased or attacked) on modern university campuses (and possibly elsewhere?).
@IslesYankeeLady9 ай бұрын
The last time I was in London, I took a picture at the same police box that I had taken 10 years before. There’s 1 at Earl’s Court. There’s also a souvenir shop that’s right there that got smart and sells some Doctor Who merch.

There was a legal battle between the BBC and the Metropolitan police. The Beeb won because: Police boxes were used by other police forces. So the Met didn't have exclusive ownership. They were never used commercially, only as a tool of the job. The police haven't used police boxes for decades. Police boxes are now far more strongly associated with Doctor Who than they ever were with the police.

In the original series, the Nestenes were extradimensional energy beings and "possessed" plastic items. They'd been in contact with human agents, who'd manufactured shop-window dummies (called autons) with guns in them for the Nestenes to use as attack vehicles. That's why the ones in this episode have guns in their arms, even though the framing kind of makes it look like dummies are just built this way as standard.

The original Doctor from the 60’s started dealing with health issues during his run, which included memory issues that effected his ability to perform. The show was hugely popular though and the network wanted it to continue, so the people running the show came up with a way they could replace the original actor so the show could continue that has become a fixture in the story of Doctor Who and allowed for it to still be on today with the Doctor of today being the same Doctor from 1963 when the show debuted. You’ll find out about it in time. Fun fact: The inclusion of the JFK assassination as somewhere the Doctor was is something of an Easter egg. Doctor Who debuted on November the 23rd 1963, the day after JFK’s assassination. Due to that DW’s debut was understandably hugely overshadowed by coverage of the assassination. Worried that the poor viewership could tank the show before it ever got off the ground the people running the show pushed and got the network to re-air the pilot episode prior to the airing of the second episode. It was a hit and it was off to the races for Doctor Who from there.

My great aunt lived just around the corner from Hendon Police College and there was a police box just a stone's throw away. The TARDIS is, more or less, like a 1929 MacKenzie Trench design Police Public Call Box. George MacKenzie Trench was a Scottish architect. The BBC tried to copyright the image since these pieces of street furniture became obsolete and the appearance had became mostly connected with Doctor Who. The claim was, of course, ridiculous.

Police boxes were common in the 1950s, but eventually retired, a public phone box where people/policemen could go to call for help. I think the phone is on the outside, and the inside was used to store emergency equipment for police officers. The TARDIS was originally able to change its outer appearance to blend in with wherever it appeared, but the chameleon circuit that did this broke when it appeared in a junkyard in London in the 1960s and has looked that way ever since.

Well, one reason that Rose isn't catching on so quick to Mickey's odd behaviour is - as we see at the beginning - he is always messing around and playing the fool. The combination with Rose being a very self-absorbed character isn't a good conduit for input and processing of anything other than Rose's immediate wants. Not noticing that Mickey had been replaced is par of the course. She gets her attitudes from her mother's influence - You may have noticed!

Police boxes used to be pretty common. The phone could be used to call the police in case of an emergency, or by a police office to call for backup or file reports. In the US, this was usually simply a small box mounted on a pole, just large enough to hold a phone and protect it from the weather. In the UK, they were basically miniature police stations, and could be used as a sheltered space for completing paperwork or even temporarily detaining a suspect until a wagon could come take them to be processed. The portable two-way radios and the pay phone (from which the public could generally make emergency calls for free) rendered them obsolete.

I love the line about the earth moving, too. I remember as a kid, going home after learning about the earth spinning and laying down in the grass. I convinced myself that I could almost feel it. This giant rock, this massive thing that contained everything I knew or could imagine, was rocketing through the cosmos while spinning like a top. I felt lighter, like the centrifugal force was pulling me upwards slightly, competing against gravity. I was suddenly terrified I'd be flung into space until my rational brain quickly shut that thought down lol. I've always held a deep, almost poetic wonder for space. Doctor Who really stoked that fire and matched my fascination, fear, and complete awe of the universe. This is my favorite show of all time. Like, my obsession with it is a core aspect of my life. I'm so happy that there's finally a reactor going through this show. Heads up, I will be giving (non-spoiler) completely unnecessary facts about the episodes, including filming, classic who connections, etc. Fun fact: The Nestene Conciousness and the living plastic first showed up in the first story of season 7 of classic doctor who in 1970. It was the first episode starring the third doctor and also the first episode ever to be aired in color. It was also put on film, unlike others, so it's one of the only classic episodes you can watch remastered in HD! I *HIGHLY* recommend you google image "third doctor nestene conciousness" because you will be blessed with a beautiful shot of John Pertwee (the 3rd doctor) crossed-eyed whilst in a strangle hold of a nestene conciousness tentacle. 10/10 ridiculous.

Hey Emme I hope you super-enjoy your Dr. Who. I used to watch the old version with my gramma and it's one of my favorite memories. I think you'd make an excellent doctor's companion.
