Christopher Eccleston excels in all his episodes but really shines in this one. Really hits hard when the Dalek tells the Doctor he would make a good Dalek. One of the best scenes ever.

Eccleston excels…. A fine and true alliteration, sadly however I remember some fans in my circle at the time being put off by of all things his looks. Because he didn’t have the crazy hair that they liked the Doctor to have….
@upg315
@upg315 Жыл бұрын
@@joeb918That's too bad. I like funky hairdos and quirky outfits as much as the next person, but that's such a silly reason to discount such a brilliant performance. Eccleston is probably my favorite after Capaldi, and while the latter did grow beautifully into a wilder hairdo by the end, both were notable for having very understated costuming, and at no point did I ever question their identity as The Doctor. They both, in their own way, managed to embody the character for me from the jump. I don't think there's ever been a terrible casting choice for the role thus far (I like the more controversial ones like Colin Baker, Peter Davidson, and Whittaker is honestly in my top five), but very few have managed to entirely bypass the awkward adjustment period for me like those two. Maybe I just like the Doctor to be a bit on the older side, the way some people like them to have messy hair or ... a certain hormonal arrangement? I don't know. This is kinda a silly, fun space superhero show, but I feel like being able to portray the titular role well is one of the biggest acting challenges out there.

That first scene with the Doctor and the Dalek was the first scene Chris filmed after their break from filming where he’d visited his dad with dementia at a time where it was particularly bad. So all that pain and anger Chris shows in that scene is him projecting his real pain and anger onto the Dalek

I love the way in your summed up the doctors character. there is a quote from one of doctor whos writings that sums him up perfectly "Heroes tell us who we want to be but when they made this particular hero they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an X-Wing, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help and they didn’t give him a superpower or a heat-ray, they gave him an extra heart. And that’s extraordinary. There will never come a time when we don’t need a hero like the doctor.” ― Steven Moffat

For an old school Doctor Who fan like myself, this was an insanely powerful episode. Not only was Eccelston's performance fantastic (😉) but it was essentially the first time we'd see a new Dalek story on TV in almost twenty years! The Daleks (and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Cybermen) have been the most iconic villains in the Doctor Who saga since the '60s! It was absolutely brilliant to see them back on screen again!

The Daleks are very iconic, and a key part in the show. They featured in its second ever story, saved it from cancellation, and made it a cultural icon. This episode does a remarkable job. Classic fans see the dalek from the doctor's perspective, knowing the danger it poses, fearing it. New fans see it from roses perspective, slowly learning about it throughout the episode. It explores a side of the daleks not really touched on before, and it gives yet more information on the time war. It also works to address a lot of the stereotypes around the daleks that made them less intimidating and something of a joke through the 80s and 90s. I love the part where it shows that it takes the energy from all of the western united states to power a single unit, it really demonstrates just how incomprehensibly powerful they are. Their power, and their intelligence, is on full display here, and the horror of it is excellent. A single unit killing hundreds of people, exactly as it should be. It's a great way to make new viewers understand the threat of the daleks, to instil a sense of fear towards them forever. Even now, after a bad streak for daleks, I still think of the Metaltron every time one appears. Arguably the best dalek episode of all time. This isn't even mentioning what it does for the doctor's character and arc, which is vital, and fantastic. The time war arc is integral to the next 10 series, and this is your first good, solid look at it. The doctor's guilt and regret drives him, and we see it more here than any prior episode. A key component of the doctor's arc, the first big story that contributes to it. This episode is the first truly amazing episode of the revival, and whilst next time is a little weak, this marks a turning point for series 1, beyond wich the tone and quality dramatically change (for the better).

So very glad you got to this episode! Christopher Eccleston is truly amazing at portraying survivor’s guilt, & his scenes opposite the Dalek were everything that any old school fan would want. Gives such a better understanding as to why the Doctor took Rose to the end of the Earth for her first trip - the subconscious need to have this new person he bonded with understand, on a very small level, what he dealt with. This episode knocked my socks off in 2005, I was 8 at the time and was in awe at how they managed to make a giant pepper pot with a plunger and whisk so very menacing. Murray Gold's score definitely helped in that department, but given that the Daleks were an instant hit with the masses from their introduction in the very second episode of Doctor Who all the way back in 1963, I guess it must have always been this way! We also get another look at the Doctor's inner dark side, and a bit more elaboration on the war and the terrible terrible things he's both done and been through. Also, two more things: First, tuck that robot looking head with the tubes/handles you saw at the beginning (the one the doctor called an old enemy) away in the back of your mind somewhere. Not for any reason, it just looks cool. Second, I won't provide any more information beyond this but I see you've started to pick up on a certain two-word phrase that's shown up in every adventure you've seen so far...

"Doc... torrr..." "The Doctor..." Classic moment, in a great episode, and for long-time fans, a great reintroduction to a classic villain. I'm just about old enough to have seen some classic Doctor Who when I was little, and my parents had watched the show when they were kids, so I grew up familiar with the Doctor, the TARDIS, and the Daleks. But at the same time, those of us who knew the show before had no knowledge of the Time War: that story wasn't part of the old show, it was something that had happened between the old show ending and the new show beginning. What had happened to the Doctor, to the Time Lords, to the Daleks... that was a mystery to us too.

I was particularly looking forward to seeing you cover this one for multiple reasons. The first is to see your reaction to the Daleks, the Doctor's arch-enemy (as maybe you had heard of them but probably knew nothing about them otherwise). You saw the very serious and intense reaction they provoke in the Doctor (and that the feeling is mutual). I think Eccleston's performance in this episode is amazing, especially as it reveals a lot more about the Doctor's back story (big revelations I was also looking forward to seeing your reaction to. It was also nice seeing the Doctor's reaction at the beginning to the head in the case. It belongs to another major villain race and it was like he had been dealing with the Time War against the Daleks for so long that he missed his previous adventures, even to the point of feeling nostalgic about old enemies. People talk a lot about when the Doctor first encounters the Dalek as an amazing scene (and quite rightly so) but that one is up there for me as well for that moment. It'll be interesting to see if you recognise one of the guest stars in the next episode as he's a big name now ;)

Wonderful reaction. "Dalek" and "Father's Day" are my favorite season 1 eps. I was surprised and encouraged when this came out since I can't imagine classic DW ever casting a Dalek in a sympathetic light, this ep showed the new incarnation of the show would be breaking some new thematic ground.

I think this is where the New Series really takes a step up and I think this episode stands as one of the best Dalek stories ever. Christopher Eccleston is phenomenal and this is the first time we get details about the Time War. More than that, we get a shocking glimpse of the emotional impact the war had on the Doctor. From that initial fear, to that uncontrollable rage and hatred - it's all so intense! Remember, the Doctor is a man of peace who hates weapons, so it says a lot that he wanted to kill this thing and even took up arms. Now for some context: That "old friend/enemy" that has its head on display is a Cyberman. They're the Doctor's second-most iconic enemy and are basically humans from Earth's long-lost twin planet who replaced most of their body parts with cybernetics, losing their emotions in the process. As for the Daleks, they are by far the Doctor's most iconic enemy and are up there with the TARDIS in terms of recognisable Doctor Who icons. I can guarantee that you've seen them around. They were introduced in the show's second story and are credited with making the show successful. There was literally a phenomenon called 'Dalek-Mania' where people became obsessed with them. If you want to know their basic backstory, read on. If not, then skip this paragraph: On the planet Skaro, there was a long-lasting nuclear war between two races: the Kaleds and the Thals. Eventually a deranged Kaled scientist named Davros predicted that his people would eventually mutate due to the fallout from the war, so he designed special travel machines that they could use in that state. Unfortunately for them though, Davros got impatient and kind of experimented on his people to speed up the process, turning them into the blobby hate squids that we know and love today. Then he plopped them into those armed travel machines and convinced that they were the superior beings of the universe, they set out to exterminate or dominate all other life in existence. The writer who created the Daleks actually based them on the Nazis, so they're whole thing is that they hate everything that isn't a Dalek. Final fun fact: Rob Shearman, the writer of this episode, actually adapted this story from a Doctor Who audio story he'd written, called Jubilee. Sorry for the novel-length comment, this episode just has so much to discuss. 😂😂

I remember watching this episode when it first aired here in Australia. I've been a fan of Dr Who for as long as I can remember (just a shade under 50 years now), and knowing that the show wanted to bring in new aliens I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss, thinking this was going to be the last time we saw a Dalek. :P At the time it seemed such a perfect send off, while also giving more information as to what had happened to the Time Lords. If there is such a thing as a perfect episode of Dr Who, this one would surely be near the top of the list.

Some people start questioning what they are watching during the "farting aliens" episodes. That's why I always tell them to wait for this episode to judge. Episode 4&5 were the first episodes shot and I think they were still trying to figure out the show's identity. But this episode is the beginning of what it will become. The Gallifreyans and the Daleks were at war throughout all of time, essentially. Both have their own abilities to travel through time. Back in the day, the Daleks were the stand in for the Nazis, while the robot man that you saw and thought was going to be the antagonist (these are called Cybermen) were analogous to the communist. 4 episodes in and we feel so much for Rose! For someone who is familiar with classic Who, added the fact that here they reveal that the time war that caused the demise of Gallifrey (planet of the Time Lords) was against the Daleks, the reaction of The Doctor to the last one of them is perfectly understood, but the shock of being called a good Dalek, must be huge, almost devastating. Eccleston portrayed that magnificently.

1:16 Don't be fooled by the black face. The robot head you see is a callback to another villainous monster species of the old show called Cybermen. Having one appear and a Dalek and UNIT in the previous two parter and finally The Nestene Consciousness in episode 1 (they were old show monsters also) cemented something: This show has monsters like the Slitheen, but this universe has DEEP lived in roots. But the old is reintroduced just right...

Somebody may have stated this already, but I think a bit of history from vintage-"Who" is appropriate here. Can you imagine that blob being humanoid? The race the Dales evolved from was originally humanoid-not Earth-human, but human nonetheless, which was why it was easy for this one to regenerate itself from the sample of Rose's DNA. It just didn't count on that DNA also affecting its mental processes, making it even more human, which is beyond the Daleks' comprehension. The scientist who developed them took steps to strip all sense of conscience and emotion save for hate.

Well hello, Jules! The day is proceeding wonderfully here. I seem to have been the agent of mine own comments destruction, so let's start again! You're looking warm this day, Jules,💜 and now you get more of the desired background on the Doctor. A wonderful episode, where you see the Doctor can become quite ragey about certain things, but nothing so much as Daleks.😅 The Dalek was correct in saying they were very much alike, but only when the Doctor rose to the Dalek level of hatred. When the Dalek sunk to the level of kindness, and empathy, he could no longer face being alive. A few quite powerful scenes, the moment when the Doctor sees the lights and hears the voice, in the dark room, always gives me a bit of a chill.😜 I know it is only one american, only one US american, but look at the contrast between him, and the folks from the UK, in previous episodes. They are mostly welcoming to the Doctor, but this dude only sees profit, more power, and falls victim to his own greed. A great episode, and I am very glad you enjoyed it so thoroughly Even having a good laugh at the intruder window line, as well.😂 Plus you've adopted "Fantastic!"😝 Have a great day, Jules,💜 and I'll be seeing you again... pretty soon🥲😊

This episode was probably the first example of the trend the new series developed of spoiling its own episodes, either through episode titles that give away a surprise or press releases weeks in advance that give them away. They could have named the episode "Metaltron", "The Specimen", "The Thing in the Vault", or something else that would have allowed the audience to be as surprised as the Doctor.

I will admit, when I first saw the Dalek, I thought it looked and sounded ridiculous. "How could this thing possibly be a threat to someone like the Doctor?" I asked my screen. "It can't even handle stairs." Then they addressed exactly that, and I stood corrected. Anyway, you've now been introduced to the Space Nazis! That's what I (and others, I'm sure) call them. All I will say regarding them is that at some point in the future (at least not until after this season is over), it's worth going back to look at their first appearance in Classic Who (even if you don't do a reaction to it). It's very interesting. Lastly, seeing the Doctor flip from kind to hate-filled in a breath is always a shock. The fact that they elicit this strong a reaction from him really drives home how much he hates himself for what he did in the Time War (because of them).

Hi Jules, I cried at this episode and I believe that you were moved too. The Daleks are The Doctor's greatest and most enduring foe, and you will watch an episode featuring the Daleks in every season. Creator Terry Nation modelled The Daleks on The Nazi's, and a sense of dread accompanies every rncounter. Finally a bit of Lore for you: The Daleks are the metal exo-skeleton used to protect the original race 'The Kaleds' from the nuclear fallout on their home planet Skaro. Two races lived on Skaro, the humanoid 'Thalls' and the gangly Kaleds. An ensuing war heralded a terrible nuclear explosion, and having been victorious, The Daleks ventured into space intent on Universal domination. Now to blow my nose and dab my eyes! See you next week....x

This is also extremely nerdy and nit picky, but the tag underneath it says that the head was found in the sewers of London, which is true and an actual story, except that’s not a Cyberman helmet from that story. I mean, it is technically, but it’s the version that was used for a later story.
