Every regeneration is like “No! How could I get used to a new Doctor?” It breaks your heart. And then with the next change is all over again because you learn to love this Doctor too….😊 Every Doctor is different, it is not just the appearance, it’s a personality too. While the core of his personality and memories are the same every Doctor brings a new twist. The whole idea of the regeneration was a similar strike of genius as the travel in time and space which allows practically every type of story, the regeneration allows the show to continue unlimited with the same protagonist. Pure genius! The Special - Christmas Invasion is the direct link between Season 1 & 2 !!! All the Specials fit perfectly in between Season as a part of the show.

@HuntingViolets Жыл бұрын
Eccleston's Doctor must have only recently regenerated sans companion, as he looks in the mirror and makes a comment about his ears and also "It could be worse" or something like that, which is very, very interesting to me because this is also the episode where Rose finds the website guy who has pictures of the Doctor (always the Ninth Doctor) throughout history.

@andrewroberts299 Жыл бұрын
As ‘fantastic’ and emotional as “The Parting of the Ways,” was, one thing that always bugged me was the difference between Rose absorbing the time vortex energy and the Doctor. As a human, Rose absorbed the energy for a much longer period of time than the Doctor did, so why was it that the Doctor, an alien and a Time Lord, suffered the repercussions and Rose didn’t? She had no ill effects after the energy left her, but the same energy intake caused the Doctor to regenerate! I don’t think the ‘regeneration reason’ worked as it could have done, as this story wasn’t originally meant to be a regeneration story. What happened was this: during the 1st block of filming for the new season (which comprised the stories “Rose” and “Aliens of London/World War Three”), the production team were behind on the filming schedule and as a result of that, it was costing the BBC more money because of the delays. Tempers were naturally frayed, and the director, the series producer and the show runner himself, Russell T. Davies were rude to a number of actors and production staff, which didn’t sit well with Christopher Eccleston, who was very upset by their actions. Chris is a working class, northern British actor from Manchester, so was always going to side with ‘the workers’ (and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way), when he felt ‘the higher ups’ in the BBC were putting them down, so he decided there and then to quit the show and only complete 1 season as the Doctor. The BBC had tried to keep his departure under wraps, but after the second episode, “The End of the World” had aired, rumours started to circulate and the BBC had to eventually come clean about it all. So, when it came to filming the season finale, Russell as show runner and writer of the episode had to rewrite the ending to come up with a plausible reason as to why Doctor No. 9 had to regenerate into Doctor No. 10 ! Personally, I don’t think he succeeded but other fans will no doubt disagree. It was all such a shame because it was Chris Eccleston who initially contacted Russell and put himself forward for the part (once he was aware that the BBC had announced in 2003 that the show would be returning.) I think Chris was aware that nearly all of his previous roles in film, television and theatre had portrayed him as a ‘serious actor’ who hadn’t really done anything ‘fluffy’ or ‘light hearted/funny,’ and he thought that playing the Doctor would allow audiences to see a different side to him. I think, had things not got off to a bad start when filming first began, it’s highly possible that Chris might have signed on for a second season of Doctor Who. I know he loved playing the part and he was instrumental in making the series big and relevant again, but at the end of the day he had his beliefs and his morals and they were unshakable, and have been still, almost 20 years later. Since filming Doctor Who, Chris has never worked for the BBC again (in terms of working for them in a BBC produced production) and has refused to ever work with Russell T. Davies again, and to both points, he has stuck to his word! Thanks for all the great memories Chris! You were a ‘fantastic’ Doctor, but back in 2006, the King was dead, and the new King, David Tennant, had ascended to the throne, and what a reign it would be!

I suppose I can see your reasoning but at the same time couldn't the reasoning of the Doctor being a time lord and an alien be why he had a much shorter time before repercussions hit? Think of it this way, if you fill an empty glass to the brim with water, while you run the risk of spilling it, there's no immediate consequences. Now if you take that glass with the water filled to the brim and transfer it to a glass of equal size that is already full, you now overflow and spill water everywhere. The Doctor says "this is what I see, all the time" meaning his body may be use to it but you don't know the effects of overfilling it with that energy. At the same time it could very well be that the Doctor could've lasted longer holding that energy in before regeneration but it may just be that his body "sensed" he had a lethal change done and "forced" the process of regeneration to start as a safety thing. Similar to how if we take a lethal amount of medication our poison our bodies may throw up to try and vacate the lethal substance from itself. Given that I don't really think the reasoning for his regeneration was "weak". It's just up to interpretation.
@andrewroberts2992 ай бұрын
@@mkazaa I think your second theory holds more water (pun not intended) re the Doctor’s body sensing that it needed to kick start his regeneration because of the safety thing, and had he alone absorbed that power (instead of Rose) that would have been a good enough reason to regenerate and purge his body (in much the same way as the 3rd Doctor’s regeneration purged his body of the radiation emanating from the crystals in “Planet of the Spiders.” 🕷️) The reason I think it doesn’t work is because Rose absorbed the power too. Now, had there been an exchange in the minisode “Born Again,” or in “The Christmas Invasion,” between Rose and the Doctor, where she asks him why the power hurt him and not her, and the Doctor had replied with something like “My people created the power of the Time Vortex. It’s lethal to my people alone, not humans,” then it would have at least given the audience some explanation as to why it forced the Doctor to regenerate. As it stands there’s no proper reason given. It would also have told the audience that there was this distinction between the two species (Gallifreyian and human) in much the same way as radiation can be lethal to humans, but certain types of radiation can/can’t be lethal to the Doctor (10 surviving one form of radiation in the hospital in “Smith and Jones,” but not another type in “The End of Time Part 2,” which caused him to regenerate.)

During the classic era, they could get away with showing a regeneration start at the end of an episode but not reveal the new Doctor until the next which gave an air of mystery to it. But in these days of the internet and social media, there's no way they can make people wait for months until seeing the new Doctor for the first time and they certainly can't keep the new actor's identity secret. So in the modern series we typically get to see the new Doctor revealed in show at the end of the finale episode (and even then we already know who it is going to be). And if there's also a change in showrunners as well as actors (which often happens), the new boss is usually on hand during the filming of the regen scene to make sure the transition to their first story is smooth.

My journey began in the 1970's with 4th incarnation Tom Baker. His regeneration into Peter Davison for me was exciting and worrying. Prior to Dr Who Peter was known for playing one of the vets in a long running sunday evening rural period drama "All Creatures Great And Small" and I wasn't convinced at first that he could play the Doctor. During Peter's stewardship the show reached it's 25th Anniversary and building up to it the BBC starting repeating key serials from all the previous incarnations - which at the time was very novel as these were rarely if ever repeated back then. I had never seen the first 3 Doctors and I was thrilled to see them for the first time. Then for the anniversary story they bought all 5 of them together (well not quite - the first had died and the 4th didn't want to be a part of it -but they worked around that) it has always been such a novel concept for a television series. Over the years I have found the series to reach sometimes the very best of television - and sometimes the absolute worst. You may very well find the same as you continue down this labyrinth but thankfully even when you do hit rock bottom with it it does have a knack of eventually returning to something watchable.

So, now you've been through your first Dr Who regeneration. This is how you keep a franchise going for over 60 years. And the fun part is every actor handed the role brings his own personality and sartorial taste to the role. Oh, and an upgrade to the Tardis interior and sonic screwdriver. And new catchphrases. In the pre-reboot episodes, regeneration was pretty quick and efficient. In the reboot, old Doctors are allowed a speech, which is just as unique as everything else about each Doctor. Even the regeneration process is for each Doctor is unique. You'll see. Actually, two new Doctors were cast from previous story-plot actors. One you won't see (old story new Doctor is from pre-reboot series) and the other you will. Technically, a third came from a previous cast member (). Jack Harkness is arguably the longest lasting character in the franchise, especially if you count regenerations as technically ending points. You are guaranteed to see him again. One thing you should understand is that there is ALWAYS the possibility a species can seem to be 'good' but be 'bad', and ones appearing 'bad' actually be 'good'. That includes Time Lords. Given the right circumstances, any one of us is capable of anything. No; Rose did not 'end the Time War'. The Time War was fought above Gallifrey, not Earth. This was a separate, tiny battle at a different point in time, not the gargantuan Time War.

The Bad Wolf arc of Christopher Eccleston's season proved to all viewers, old and new alike, that the TARDIS was in good hands, and it's a shame that David Tennant (STILL) gets so much of the 'new' Doctor credit, when it was the excellent work done by Christopher Eccleston that ensured the show would continue. Welcome then to the 10th Doctor. A time of fabulous hair, glorious teeth, great shoes, and gorgeous coats and that's just Jack. But really, the ongoing success of the show comes down to exactly what you described in your wrap up. Hope. Goodness. Love. I don’t know if anyone’s told you this, my apologies if they have, but Torchwood was this renewed Doctor Who’s original code name at the BBC. They knew that reviving a much beloved but long cancelled show was a big risk so they codenamed it while it was being developed and they liked the name so much they decided to use it for something once they’d announced that they were actually secretly working on bringing Doctor who back! Also I know what you mean about jarring transformations, I watched this as it all unfolded as a kid and I was so cross (heartbroken really) that we lost Christopher Eccleston that I sat with my back to the tv once David Tennant appeared, he quickly won me over though! It's the amazing thing that they did so long ago, without even knowing what they were doing - "regeneration", as it became known about 10 years into the show, allowed Doctor Who to go on and on and on. Each new regeneration, absolutely some fans will take a disliking to the new Doctor. It happens. #6 killed Doctor Who for my big brother for about 10 years. But, you can always pop back in next regeneration, and see if you like the new Doctor. The first episode of a new Doctor as such is often a great starting point for new fans, but also will have high ratings cos of all the former fans tuning in to check out the new person. Often this is also a time of the changing of the production team, so the whole show gets regenerated.

What's really going to bake your noodle is when, at some point, you rewatch this this Doctor's arc. This is the power of good writing, as there's SO MANY BAD WOLF references hidden in the background. Yet, even if you watched the Doctor Who Confidential episodes, (Yes, you should look into those, pretty much a making of and behind the scenes for each one) THEY NEVER SPOILED THAT BAD WOLF TWIST!

Well, there went my plan to spend my morning working ... 😂 great reactions! And FWIW I hated David Tennant the first couple of episodes, just because he wasn't Chris Eccleston. But it didn't take long to fall in love with him too!

What a great reaction ! and a regeneration episode is always the end of an era, full of mixed emotions for fans. But this story was SO good, and so well written, because Russell T Davies, knows the show so well & has loved the show for decades!

I glad to see that you are starting your Doctor Who journey. Many of the original episodes are available on Dailymotion for free starting in 1963 with season 1 episodes 0 An Unearthly Child. No need to go back that far on your KZbin channel but someday you may want to check the out.

Dr who regenerations are so strange. They give you a huge hard moment and no time to process because here’s the new doctor. But life often doesn’t give you time to process and it’s part of the pacing and intensity of the doctor that it’s always on to the next…

Something that probably escaped your notice. Back in the first episode Rose, the Doctor looks in a mirror at Rose’s place and comments on his new ears.

That is it for the Daleks. Rose used the power of the time vortex to erase them all from time and space.

If this felt jarring as a first time viewer after being with Christopher Ecclecton for 13 episodes, imagine how it was for us back in 1966 when we lost the First Doctor (William Hartnell after 3 years and over 130 episodes (40+ episodes per season back then!). Not only didn't we know it was coming, we didn't even know it was a possibility! Regeneration (or 'renewal' as it was termed that first time) is, of course, one of the keys to the show's longevity; noy only did it oversome the practical difficulty of actors burning out (a big problem in the days of recording an episode *every week* virtually yearr round) and simply aging (with the best will in the world, the aren't many actors who could sustain a role forb 60 years), but also gives the regular opportunity for a sort of soft reboot--same character, different face, different temperament, same memories.

“Those two episodes were brilliant.” Brilliant. Funny you should use that adjective… Also it’s kind of a time (no pun intended) honored tradition to have the new Doctor self-deprecate, or self-compliment. I remember Tom Baker doing the same and he very much approved of his nose.
@The-Cosmic-Hobo Жыл бұрын
In the original show, it was very rare for there to be story arcs crossing over episodes. On average, each story was comprised of 4 x 25min episodes, but outside of that story, you didn't get much call back to the past. (There were 2 seasons that did have season-long story arcs, and there was 1 season where each story fed into the next - but that's 3 seasons out of 26...) Of course, the final original story went to air in 1989, and television evolved with the likes of The X Files setting the way for season long arcs - so when RTD brought WHO back - he weaved these big stories through the little ones, building up to some epic finales.

So 'Born Again' was meant to be the first scene of the Christmas special but was removed from the script for slowing the plot down. The BBC later wanted a scene shot for the Children in Need charity telethon in November between the June finale & Christmas. So they shot alongside episode 4 of the next series.

In the second episode, the Doctor says everything has its time and everything dies. I am sorry (again) to see Nine/Eccleston go. I wish he could come back again! I did not know this would happen the first time I watched this (so long ago) on PBS. David Tennant was so babyfaced back then. I've been watching some of his earlier work post-Good Omens, so I knew that, but still.

Chris Eccleston is just an amazing and intense actor. He’s probably the best of all the Who actors and my personal favorite for the new-Who era. He brings his A game to every scene and you can see every actor who shares a 1-on-1 scene with him elevate their own game. I remember how sad I was to see him go and how resentful I was of this new guy. But after a few episodes I stopped comparing whether Tenant did what Eccleston did, and instead looked at his own strengths. WHAT I LEARNED IS I WAS WRONG TO WORRY. In many ways Tenant really inhabits the part and “became” the doctor even more than Eccleston did. For me I stopped seeing an actor doing a Fantastic job portraying a cool character started seeing the character itself. On top of that Tenant has a wonderful ensemble energy, when there are larger multi character scenes he somehow weaves it altogether and really makes things gel in an awesome way. Any on top of that this coming season has some really great episodes including my series favorite.

The Time Lords in the classic era were portrayed as one of the most powerful species in the entire universe - thanks both to their tech (ie time travel, as well as a forcefield around their own planet that avoids any other time-capable species from attacking them) and also the ability to regenerate (12 times only). Above them, however, were beings known as Immortals, who were literally that - they cannot be killed... We met just a handful of them over the years, and their powers are certainly way beyond the Time Lords.

The Series 1 arc and finale have (for me) never been bettered. I don't mean that it's all downhill from here. It's that when they were writing and making it, they had no idea whether the BBC would commission a second season, plus the problems behind the scenes that led to Christopher Eccleston quitting meant that even if there would be a second season he wouldn't be in it; that all combines to give this season a special quality. I've really enjoyed your videos as you go on this journey. Only another 164 episodes (and counting) before you've caught up. 😆

Dalek Emperor: "I am immortal" Bad Wolf Rose: "You are tiny. I can see the whole of time and space, every single atom of your existence, and I divide them." Possibly still the best "Bitch, please" in the show's history.

I originally thought of Bad Wolf being just Rose, but you're right, she's more of a hybrid with the TARDIS, which we know is alive. Which makes you wonder when Bad Wolf speaks of saving "My Doctor," is it just Rose who is saying it?
