The Master is an often reoccurring classic who villain - not just a timelord, but the Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock; a timelord who was always searching for ways to extend his life beyond the 12 regenerations limit with blatant disregard for other lifeforms. He was always one step ahead of the Doctor and often used him as a pawn in his plans - so basically very dangerous and unpredictable.

All these years, countless reactions it, and I never noticed until you pointed it out that Chantho didn't say "Chan" in that critical moment. I think any old-school fan watching this episode (who hadn't been spoiled) just *knew* who Professor Yana was going to become, once he revealed his watch. 😀

Derek Jacobi is such a legend of an actor. He played the turn from Yana to the Master so well. I remember my mum was quite mad when the master regenerated because she loved John Simm and didn't want him to be evil. Of course now we know he plays evil and crazy so well. Fun fact: the little kid playing Crete won a competition for his role. It was weeks long and was part of a companion show called Totally Doctor who. It was a fun show for kids that aired just alongside this one series

Derek Jacobi on Doctor Who was something I never thought I’d see. I’ve loved him ever since I saw I, Claudius on reruns on Masterpiece Theatre back around 1990. If you are looking for a never-reacted-to miniseries that is widely considered to be one of the greatest ever made, check out I, Claudius! Jacobi is such a brilliant actor. He shows up a lot in Kenneth Branagh films. He’s great as the Chorus in Henry V, a film I still like to play on tv when I’m cleaning my apartment. “O for a muse of fire /That would ascend the brightest heaven of invention.”

You can imagine the levels of freak out happening when this episode came out. 😁

My thoughts when originally watching this episode: “…another Time Lord?!…oh **** it’s the Master.” He is basically the evil opposite of the Doctor. In the classic series he travelled around in his TARDIS trying to gain power and causing chaos and destruction. Derek Jacobi is a British acting legend. The way his face changes in the moment of transformation is so brilliant.

20:58 About Professor Yana: Yep, a shame but that was not really a person. Like when The Doctor had to hide himself with The Family of Blood, it created a powered down template of the Time Lord in question. The Master kept his genius though bc he created those food based circuits even as a mere human. But his arrogance always gets him in trouble, so he toned it down REALLY LOW to get along. Though he may be the 10th Doctor, this is at least the 17th Master (maybe more). When we first saw him way back we were told he was already on his last life (13th) and has "died" a few more times since...

"He looks familiar - Have you seen I, Claudiua? - a BBC miniseries about the Julio-Claudian Roman Emperors -- Derek Jacobi (Dr Yana) played Claudius. George Baker (Login in the Classic Who serial Full Circle) played Tiberius, his brother. Brian Blessed (King Vultan in Flash Gordon) played Augustus, his grandfather. Sean Phillips (Rev. Mother Moiham in the David Lynch version of Dune) played Livia, his grandmother. Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean Luc Picard in ST: TNG) played Sejanus, the prefect of the Praetorian Guard who is having an affair with Claudius' sister. John Hurt (Kane in Alien) played Caligula, his nephew who had a condition simillar to that of Dr. Yana - only he described it as the hoof beats of galloping horses. And a lot of British actors and actresses I'm not as familiar with.

One of the greatest cliffhangers in Doctor Who history. There's so much working about this episode. The Torchwood puzzle piece (you did it right; I, and I think a lot of other people, didn't see Torchwood until well after this season), Jack catching up with 10, the super unique and interesting setting. But my gods, the Master reveal is amazing. The first other Time Lord in the show since the revival. It is so well done. No one expected the Chameleon Arch to be used beyond it's debut episode, and then BAM! This strange man at the end of the Universe has one. Derek Jacobi is amazing in both roles. Hot take though, this episode also ruined regeneration forever. Prior to 2005, every time we see a Time Lord regenerate it visually looks a bit different, depending on whatever that director wanted and what special effects were available at the time. In this episode, they wanted a visual cue to signify to the audience that the Master is the same as the Doctor, so his regeneration looks almost identical to when Eccleston did it. But now (I guess very minor spoilers for the show going forward) every single regeneration in Doctor Who looks the same: exploding with golden light, standing up, arms out. It's not a bad look, it's just...a bit boring after a while.
