What you need to know is that Tom Baker was, for a whole generation, THE Doctor - he was the longest serving (from the 1970s to the 1980s) and was hugely popular. He was truly iconic (from 1970s into the 1980s). The scarf and the hat was synonymous with Doctor Who (as were jelly babies). That is why is was a BIG deal when he popped up at the end.

Younger generations cried, too. I started watching Doctor Who in 2012 and binged it. I had never seen any Classic Who, I'm just 39 years old now. But of course I knew who Tom Baker was. 😅 I have since seen at least the 7th Doctor's run, too. I found that German dubbed. It wasn't all that good. 😅 Classic Who is just not for me. Too cheap. I don't even watch Star Trek for that reason, although I know, it's apparently pretty cerebral.

@@alanbeaumont4848Patrick Troughton was AMAZING. 😅 Probably in my Top 3. At least Top 5. There was really only one Classic Doctor, I didn't dig. I didn't like. And you're gonna be surprised but it was actually the third Doctor. I just didn't like his energy. And old guy who does Kung-Fu? It seemed SO awkward. Also the way he speaks is a bit strange. Always SO commanding and it sounds like he had a slight lisp... I may be nitpicking because as I said, I never really watched whole Classic Who episodes. I'm basically drawing all this from clips or reviews. But maybe that just justifies it even more, the reasons why I don't like Doctor 3. They're pretty shallow. My reasons for not liking Doctor 13 could be a LOT more detailed... 😅🤭

@@mradriankool I only watched series 11 but then I couldn't take it anymore... 😅 The odd thing is, I know Jodie can act! I saw her in that one Black Mirror episode, she was pretty sexy and awesome. When I watched her in Doctor Who, it seemed all life had been drained. Of course it was also due to the godawful scripts (and I still can't forgive the retconning from her regenerations. I'm also not a fan of the bi-generation because it seemed like an asspull and panders to current day political agendas and identity politics, which I want to ESCAPE from when I watch the show. But that one I can accept a bit easier, probably. Oddly enough, I also saw The Fugitive Of The Judoon and quite liked it. It was only a few weeks after my mother died. Who was a huge Jack Harkness fan. You can imagine how furious I was, when I first saw the episode. 😅 bitter irony that my mom didn't get to experience it... But they still need to explain all that bs. Me personally, I would love it, if actually the MASTER was the Timeless child. And that made him go insane. He just wanted to trick the Doctor into believing that it was her. And maybe the Ruth Doctor was actually just an accomplice of his to help him make the trick work. I don't know, something like that. I would get easier sleep, if they explained it that way but unfortunately this isn't make a wish.... Hope they don't cancel the show again. It got a lot better again, but the internet is still angry because they can't look past a gay protagonist. They read and interpret "gender agenda" into EVERYTHING they see on screen these days and not even half of it is justified. I had a lot of fun with The Devil's Chord. Like, A LOT. Creepy episode, too at times. I like that they explore alternitive outcomes nowadays and that we can travel back in time and "fix" stuff and see the consequences. The show has never done that before as far as I know. They only say "that reality has never existed" but don't really show BOTH alternatives sequentially. I'm sorry, long rant. Conversation with you is inspiring. 😅 I only wanted to say why I don't like Doctor 13.

To be fair to Ecclestone, the BBC lied about him publicly when he left which is why Ecclestone was still unhappy years afterwards. I understood that Ecclestone was tempted to come back for the 50th because he liked Moffat and enjoyed working on his episodes in season one. Ultimately he decided not to do it. He hasn’t been blacklisted from the BBC, but the BBC’s lies when he left resulted in him being blacklisted from British tv for some time and he went and worked in the USA for a while. He’s talked about it in interviews before. He has ultimately played the 9th Doctor in extended media so even if he might not appear on screen again, he’s still involved in the franchise.

Big Finish did so much for the Doctors. Thats why my ranking would be 1. Tom Baker by lightyears.... if that man tells you he is an alien, you believe it, no doubt 2. Paul McGann/ Sir John Hurt , also both had only audio Series, but just wow. You can see the Doctor infront of you thats how good they are 3. Peter Capaldi, 4. Sylvester McCoy, 5. Christopher Eccleston the audios wow. To me "Girl deconstructed" is one of the best Doctor Who storys ever / Colin Baker, the Audios are awesome, he nails the part, they improved so much of the 6th Doctor, and show how good he is, given propper material. 6. Matt Smith, 7.William Hartnell 8. David Tannent, WAY to overrated, way to human 9. Jon Pertwee 10. Spoilers* 11. Patrick Troughton. havent seen much of him, maybe higher next time. You can flip this and 12...not sure yet. 12. Spoilers* 13. Peter Davison....he doesnt click for me, mostly because there is no good chemestry with companions, most of them are annoying tbh.

If you guys want to find it - look for "The Night of the Doctor" - it's a minisode that comes right before this episode and it will address a point you raised in your wrap up. The Eighth Doctor (McGann) was, until the reboot in 2005, the Doctor with the most stories as he played the doctor in dozens of audio stories for Big Finish productions. He may have only appeared on screen once but he was a very beloved Doctor to fans and his "canon" is extensive.

Whist the doctors are flying around doing their coordinates to send Gallifrey away: the master and Rassllon are throwing lighting return of the Jedi style. Also another Easter egg: the time lords say that the moment is hidden in the omega arsenal. Omega is a classic who bad guy: one of the founders of the time lords that went evil. Fun Fact: In the Spin Off series, the Sarah Jane Adventures, there was a cancelled Christmas Special between Seasons 4 and 5 that would've been inspired by a Christmas Carol. The story planned to have both Tom Baker and Matt Smith appear, with Smith having a cameo and Tok Baker having a more significant role. If it had gone ahead and Tom Baker agreed to return, it would've been his first role in the Whoniverse since a special in the 90s. Watching this in a sold out theater here in the States was the ultimate. When Tom Baker, my Doctor, showed up, there was not a dry eye in the house. Also, you need to watch the short with the classic companion, Leela.

So happy that you both finally got to enjoy the 50th anniversary. I lovely bow put on a certain area of Doctor Who. Just a couple more steps until we get to a New World again. And can we all agree that 10 and 11 together are magic?

This special really is great! So many plot threads brought together, all the Easter Eggs, John Hurt's performance, Tom Baker showing up at the end. As well as Osgood's scarf, a lot of the objects and photos in the Black Archive are recognisable from Classic Who. Tom Baker has a very distinctive voice, you know it's him from the moment he starts speaking off screen.

Eccleston briefly considered returning, and Moffat began plotting the episode with his Doctor participating, but it wasn't to be. He played the Doctor again in some audios, but he's unlikely to return to the TV show.

@jay-wiki He didn't come back during the 12 years the three of them were gone, so I don't know why fans are so convinced he would come back now, just because he had an angry outburst at a panel where he basically said "fuck those guys." He's never coming back to the show. Audios are the closest we'll ever get, unfortunately.

I love this episode, and I have to say that yours is the best reaction I've seen to it. No shade that you didn't know the 4th doctor, a lot of people haven't gone back to the original series. But he was epic, probably the defining doctor for a lot of us. I cried when he showed up out of the blue.

This was kinda (long story) my very first episode! I saw it on the 50th anniversary and I didn’t know wtf was going on but I know I had to see more! I started and will NOT ever stop! I thought the same thing about the last fella in the show. There was something special about him so I also started from the beginning asap! They had a 24/7 channel on the Mobdro app on the firestick and I just hit it full speed! I started to watch and fell in DEEEEEP love. Ten years later, this is my all time favorite show! 11 is my first Doctor but My Doctor is Tom Baker! I love them all, though! They all have things that make them special! (I also love 2, 3, 5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13 😂😂😂😂The jury is still out on this one but… it always is until I watch them a few times. 🤷🏾‍♀️) The title of my favorite show belonged to Buffy and lawd knows I love Buffy Anne Summers but The Doctor is that dude!! ❤️🟦❤️ A few years ago I found out William Hartnell and I are birthday twins! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 ( Jan 8) my house is painted my favorite shade of the TARDIS. I have stuff all over the house. I have my sonic screwdrivers Im a fan fan! 😂 The chat told u all the lore so I’ll save my lil two cents on that! Thank you fellas for awesome reactions!! ❤❤❤

The Doctor does have free will. It looks like it is wrong, because it is just that the TARDIS detects threats, and travels to them. The one thing it often does, is take him to the locations he wants to visit. Just at a point where the Doctor is needed at those locations.

The answer to the whole "all 13" situation follows after some spoiler space, since it involves information that was known behind the scenes at the time this aired, but not yet shown on camera. By the time this one aired Matt Smith had already retired and his replacement (Peter Capaldi) had been cast. So they were able to film a narrow view of 12's eyes. That's the meaning of the whole "all 13" that you guys puzzled over. That brief bit is a look ahead to what the the 12th Doctor will look like.

@35:31 The bulletin board full of every previous companion from the '60s to the present is a fun easter egg. The way Clara's gaze lingers over Susan (the Doctor's granddaughter and his original companion in the first season of the classic series) was a nice touch. Love that the only other ones you can see clearly in that shot are the other two season 1 companions, Ian and Barbara (just below Susan's picture).

True, Eccleston did not agree to the 50th, and that's why there's only a hint in the regeneration and only some still imagery that BBC owned in the film. Also, the war doctor sparked a whole recount for a minute. lol

Guys, as you so enjoyed the 50th, and you loved the 10th and 11th Doctors interacting with each other, please react to “The Three Doctors,” (10th anniversary story - 1973) and “The Five Doctors,” (20th anniversary story - 1983). In “The Three Doctors,” you will be seeing Doctors 1, 2 and 3 (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and the then current main 3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee) and in “The Five Doctors,” you’ll see the first 3 Doctors again (plus a little bit of Tom Baker (No. 4) as well as the then current main 5th Doctor, Peter Davison). In the 20th anniversary story the 1st Doctor is played by actor Richard Hurndall (as William Hartnell had passed in 1975) but you will see both Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee reprise their roles in this, as well as Nicholas Courtney who played Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (and he was also in “The Three Doctors,” as the 3rd Doctor was working for UNIT at that time). Also in the 20th you’ll see Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. Please give these stories a go. They’re fun and I think you’d enjoy them for the nostalgic pieces they are.

So weird when you remember John Hurt was also Ollivander the wand seller in the Harry Potter franchise. That role and the War Doctor are so different in appearance, though only a few years passed between his last appearance in the Deathly Hallows and this episode. My apologies if someone else has mentioned these easter eggs. The opening sequence showed us two links to the very first episode; a sign advertising I.M. Foreman Scrap Merchant, and the name on the Coal Hill School sign; Caiman of the Governors I. Chesterton, and Headmaster W Cockburn. Ian Chesterton was the first male companion, along with first female companion Barbara Wright, both of whom were teachers at Coal Hill. W. Cockburn is a reference to the first director, Warris Huseein (played by Sacha Dhawan in An Adventure in Time and Space) and Anthony Coburn, who wrote An Unearthly Child. Greyhound Leader was Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart's UNIT code name. I could go on but this will turn into an doctoral thesis, due to how packed with goodies this episode is.

Okay so, I found you guys season 1 episode 1 reaction a couple of weeks ago, and just realized that I have binge watched to the current reaction...what a journey!! Ngl, some of the early episodes were rough to watch with all the 'cheek-clapping' comments, but now at least you're getting that the doctor is not human, and has waay more on his mind than just that...not that it doesn't come up on occasion (pun intended) 😉 So now I'm going to go watch season 14 and I think there's a movie or two I can watch until the next doctor arrives THEN I will dive into the deep dives!! Enjoying seeing you guys enjoy this (and grow) with this show like I did!❤❤❤❤

Haven't read all the comments yet, but that intro with the camera effect and then the silhouette of the policeman walking past the sign for Foreman's scrapyard and then Coal Hill School was basically a spot-on recreation of the intro to the first ever episode, which the docudrama partly showed being filmed (and which Verity wanted repeated due to the JFK assassination taking justified precedence that weekend back in 1963) Also, when Clara rides her motorbike into the TARDIS, it's in the exact same spot as the "real" Police Box that William Hartnell stops by on the night he was told he was being replaced in that docudrama. Finally, I recommend the prequel minisode "Night of the Doctor", for reasons that will become apparent when you watch it!
