I watched this season with my dad (bit of a doctor who purist, an old fan) and he was pretty skeptical and negative on the series. Rewatching it now with you guys has been pretty satisfying for me, since you all are so positive and optimistic. I like the direction this season takes, and I'm loving the reactions.

So in the marketing, and internally it's referred to as Season 1, but a lot of media and entertainment news sites (and wikipedia!) are still calling it Series 14, and Russell T Davies has used both terms in interviews. Personally, I think the next showrunner will come along and ignore the new Season titles.

Wikipedia actually had a whole big discussion about it, and the result of that discussion was: Undecided/Inconclusive. And so Series 14 stayed simply because it was first. The (new) Tardis Wiki however did change it to Season 1, the old Tardis Wiki on Wikia/Fandom is still Series 14; but the admins abandoned that one for the new one.

Maybe 'The Church on Ruby Road' is listed as the premiere on Disney+ for those outside the UK, but it's still considered a Special in England. BBC's iPlayer lists 'Space Babies' as Episode 1. This is also the first time I'm seeing that ident. Does anyone know if that's their international or US one?

Space Babies is only the second episode on Disney Plus/America, Church on Ruby Road is still the Christmas special everywhere else as far as I know with this remaining as episode 1

I think the renumbering of Church on Ruby Road as S1E1 is a Disney+ only thing. On BBC iPlayer its marked as Christmas Special, and this one Space Babies is episode 1. Go figure!

Tbf Disney’s decision sort of makes sense. A lot of context is missed without watching the Christmas special first mainly to do with ruby’s character so it makes sense they’d want new viewers to start from there. Space babies is alright but imo it’s a horrible starting point lmao

You know what I love? In Moffat era Doctor was always THE greatest THE strongest and all the legends were always about him. Everyone feared him and half of the finales were basically just some other aliens trying to stop Doctor from doing something. Who's the warrior in the Pandorica? Its the Doctor. Who's the Hybrid? It's the Doctor. But as soon as RTD returned, he immediately established a bunch of terrifying beings who SCARE Doctor shitless. Nothing, Toymaker, Boogieman... We're back to an era, where Doctor is not a god, and he's just a part of this big, scary universe, where even someone like him can be gobbled up instantly, if he doesn't do his best to survive.

To be honest, Moffat is both my favorite writer and showrunner of Doctor Who. But I gotta say, I am absolutely in love with RTD’s new direction since he’s been back. The Doctor still feels like wise old Timelord who has been through everything including hell and back, but all the unknown factors and powers of the Pantheon scaring him shitless has been a real treat to watch. And Ncuti is oozing charisma more than the bogeyman is oozing bogeys.

Personally I think they should have let them age and had the story be "space Kids" and had 6 years olds running the ship. That way they could of used child actors that could talk and avoided the "Baby Geniuses" mouths. I also think the boogeyman should have been an actual kid mentally and the "was I born wrong?" should have went to them.

Yeah, I didn't enjoy this episode very much at all. Really questionable decisions that led to this premiere including airing the second episode right after. Which was much better, but still has notable flaws. I'm really hoping for a more grounded character story next week with some actually fun aliens. Also let's agree that Baby Eric was scarier than the snot monster by a million percent.

this is the first episode of the new series. the church on ruby road is still just the Christmas special attached with the others. on bbc iplayer its labelled correctly but since on disney+ loads of people will be new to the show they put it as the first episode so you know where to start
