In case nobody has mentioned it yet, when "John Smith" is describing his parents "Sydney and Verity", they are named after Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert, who were both pretty much responsible for the creation of Doctor Who back in '63.

Oh yes. And if I may add in the hopes Jules reads this: a couple years ago a movie was made about the beginnings of the series, called "An Adventure in Space and Time". I thought it gave such a sweet introduction of how it came to be. Well worth watching.

A moment that doesn’t get enough appreciation in this episode is when Martha offers sardines and jam to “Jenny.” The Mother at this point isn’t really listening and probably understands that Martha has twigged her too, but Martha wants to be sure and offers something disgusting that no human would ever eat but sounds right if you only have a surface level understanding of human culture and cuisine. It’s not a huge moment as the two of them already understood the game by then, but it does still demonstrate why Martha is one of the most clever and competent companions that the Doctor has ever had.

In John Smith's book, "A Journal of Impossible Things", sketches of previous actors who have played the Doctor are shown, marking the first time that the 2005 series has explicitly depicted the Doctors from Doctor Who (1963) and Doctor Who (1996). The actors depicted on screen were William Hartnell, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann. Images of the Journal that were published on the BBC website reveal that the other remaining Doctors, Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton, Christopher Eccleston, and David Tennant himself, were also illustrated on the page.

I still remember my thrill at watching this episode for the first time when it originally screened in Australia and seeing the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) depicted in sketch-form - attesting that the TV movie was absolutely canonical.
@Scripture-Man
@Scripture-Man Ай бұрын
When I first saw McGann's face in the sketch I actually had mixed feelings and wasn't sure if that was the right decision. Now, it seems to obvious, and so natural that McGann's Doctor would be part of canon, but back then it was still anyone's guess.
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 Ай бұрын
There was also a bit of debate back then over if Mcgaans Doctor was canon or not. Rtd himself included a joke about how "mcgaan doesn't count" in a show he wrote a few years before Doctor who (queer as folk, I think). So, including him here settled that entirely.

‘Human Nature’ is the start of one of the best run of episodes in modern Doctor Who history (through to the end of the season). Tennant and writer Paul Cornell both won awards for this two-parter - Tennant for his heartbreaking performance of the tortured John Smith grappling with events he doesn’t understand and Cornell for the TV adaptation of his 1990s Doctor Who novel of the same name. He also wrote the episode ‘Father’s Day’ in series 1. The human drama aside, this story is a deeply moving exploration of the tragedy of the young generation who, less than a year later, would be thrown into the horrors of World War I. Fun facts - among the drawings in John Smith’s diary are several of the Doctor’s old faces! When John Smith says his parents were Sydney and Verity, it’s an affectionate nod to Sydney Newman, head of BBC Drama in 1963 who first commissioned Doctor Who and Verity Lambert, the show’s original producer.

Interesting note about Martha. You've seen enough of Series 3 that I think it's okay to talk about. Martha, more often than Rose, is often the hero of a story. Rose often did what the Doctor noted earlier this series: she would talk to the right people and ask the right questions. She was *sometimes* the hero of a story, notably in her first episode and the last of Series One. More often, she was simply along for the ride. But Martha has been an active, vital participant in nearly every adventure she has had with the Doctor. He was not alright when they began traveling together. He was despondent and reckless, and Martha has saved his skinny behind again and again and again at this point. To the point where the Doctor has begun giving her very serious responsibilities in their adventures. He places incredible trust and faith in Martha's reliability, competence, and resourcefulness, and she never lets him down. Conversely, he is letting her down almost all the time. Because he gives her all this trust, but he has never really given her the closeness that she wants from him. If anything, their relationship has become more like colleagues, or a commanding officer and a faithful soldier.

I completely agree that this is a great story. It's one of my favorites from this season. One of my favorites from the whole Tennant era really. If no one else has mentioned it yet, this story was adapted by Paul Cornell from his 1995 novel of the same name, "Human Nature." Which starred the then current 7th incarnation of the Doctor as played on the show by Sylvester McCoy. The companion in the novel was Bernice Summerfield, who was created for the original novel range and never appeared in the TV series. Bernice has since gone on to have an extensive amount of audio adventures made by the Big Finish audio company, where she's been voiced by actress and prolific Big Finish director Lisa Bowerman. Also its fun to note that John Smith drew all of the first 8 incarnations of the Doctor in his Journal of impossible things, including the 7th who was the featured Doctor, as I said earlier, in the original version of this story.

Spion Kop (or the Kop for short) was mentioned, it's a colloquial name or term for a number of single-tier terraces and stands at sports stadiums, particularly in the United Kingdom. The steep nature resembles the Spion Kop, a hill near Ladysmith, South Africa, which was the scene of the Battle of Spion Kop in January 1900 during the Second Boer War. Liverpool F C has a stand called The Kop. The use of the name for the stand was given recognition at Anfield in 1928. Wikipedia.

Here we are Jules, this isn't just a good one, but one of the best! This two-parter frequently ranks highly in 'best story' polls, and it's clear to see why. It's such a unique and brilliantly written and performed story that stands out from the crowd. Now for some trivia that I'm sure you've read by now, but hey, this is what I'm here for (sorry!). -This two-parter is actually based ob a Doctor Who novel from the '90s, also called Human Nature, which featured the Seventh Doctor and his companion Bernice Summerfield. You see, when Classic Who ended in 1989, a publisher called Virgin Books essentially picked up where the show left off, with a range of licensed Doctor Who novels called The New Adventures. They featured the Seventh Doctor and his TV companion, Ace, before introducing several original companions as the series went on. They tended to be more mature than the show had been, with adult themes and content. The author of the Human Nature novel actually wrote the TV version too. -In 'John Smith's' journal of impossible things, most of the sketches are of New Who monsters, but there's one page with several faces on it - these are several classic Doctors, with the most prominent one in the centre being the Eighth Doctor. This is significant, not only because it was the first depiction of classic Doctors in New Who, but because it cemented the Eighth Doctor as being canonical. You see, he'd only appeared in a one-off telemovie in 1996, which had led some people to question whether or not he was canonical. -The Doctor's skill with a cricket ball is a callback to the Fifth Doctor, who was an avid cricketer. -'John' says that his parents were named Sydney and Verity. Sydney Newman was the BBC Head of Drama, who came up with the initial idea for Doctor Who, while Verity Lambert was the show's first producer. - You can watch the full video of the Doctor's video message, which is quite funny. David Tennant kind of just rambles for a bit. 😂 I can't wait for part two!

Thomas Brodie-Sangster the actor who plays Tim was also the little boy from the film "Love Actually", "Game of Thrones", "Netflix's Godless", "The Queen's Gambert" and "The Maze Runner" movies as youv'e said he also stars in a recently new australian/british show that's on Disney+ called "The Artful Dodger" worth checking out if your interested it's a great series. "Human Nature" was based on a Doctor Who novel that was published and written by Paul Cornell during the Wilderness Years in the mid 1990's few years after the original series cancellation in the book the story remains the same but instead of The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) it was in place of The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) who was technically still the current Doctor at that time despite the show not being on the television. The Doctor as John Smith also states his parents were Sydney and Verity which was a reference to the creators or the show Sydney Newman who was the creator of the show and Verity Lambert who was the original and first female producer of Dr. Who way back when the series started in 1963. I believe this is also the first time that The Classic Doctors are featured in New Who from the drawings on John Smith's journal.

It's wonderful to revisit this episode (and the next one when you get around to it next week). It's a great two-parter, especially with the idea that the Doctor can turn human and not even remember who he is. It's a bit tough on Martha though in her position in the 1910's, even if it helps her come into her own as a character knowing the Doctor's secret and having to keep an eye on him. Other people have already mentioned the trivia stuff I was going to (like the Doctor's past faces, a reminder for you that Eccleston was nowhere near the first) so there's no point rehashing that. It's interesting that you recognised Thomas Brodie-Sangster of all people, so maybe you might recognise a few more beyond just the special cases of Anthony Head and Andrew Garfield. There are a couple of other recognisable actors in there, one of which (Harry Lloyd, who plays Baines/Son of Mine) is the great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens. It's nothing directly to do with the show, it's just an interesting little tidbit. Oh, speaking of Harry's who are descendants of famous people, Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films) is the grandson of one of the early Doctors.

This story was an adaptation of a 1995 book called Human Nature. Paul Cornell wrote the TV story & also wrote the original novel that this story was based on. Its was a loose adaption though, some big changes being: 1)Book was McCoy Doctor & Benny, while tv is Tennant Doctor & Martha 2)The reason for the Doctor becoming human, McCoy Doctor (more "alien" in character especially compared to Tennant Doctor) did it to try and learn about grief to better support Benny/future companions while Tennant (who by some Doctor's standards is already fairly human like) did it to hide from the Family. 3)The book has the Aldertides be the villains while TV has the Family Of Blood be villains. 4)Timothy Latimer (Timothy Dean in the book) gets a worse fate than a beating but starts developing timelord traits to survive. 5)Same location of Farringham,with the Doctor/John Smith being a history teacher & falling in love with a Joan Redfern (but she was science teacher in the book as opposed to a nurse matron in the TV story) 6) Similar timings but not exact (tv story being November 1913 & the book being April 1914) Later Paul Cornell did some short stories that linked the book Version to the TV version, meaning the Doctor has technically done Human Nature twice, at the same place and during the same school year😅.

@@ashleytuchin7693 edit: doesn't like it with the links but part 0 can be found on Doctor Who website or via TARDIS Wiki & part 1 & part 2 are on KZbin. yeah it was, there were 3 short stories that were linked by a common thread, though like need to have at least seen all the TV parts to avoid most spoilers. 1 was only released as a short story while the last 2 got audio readings on KZbin with Benny's Big Finish voice actor, Lisa Bowerman as the narrator of one & the actor for Daughter Of Mine, narrating the other. Part 0-The Shadow Passes (spoils the 2020 TARDIS Team + spoils the end of the TV story) Part 1-Shadow Of A Doubt (the actual linking of book & TV-spoils the TV story, slightly spoils the book too, but also namedrops over Whoniverse lore & Doctors past and future (e.g McCoy Doctor & the Muldwych/Merlin Doctor to name a couple)) Part 2-The Shadow In The Mirror (the end of the Shadow trilogy, follows up on Shadow Passes + answers the question asked at the end of Shadow Of A Doubt.)

Ah, one of my favourite two-parters from 10's run. Written by Paul Cornell who also wrote "Father's Day" from S1 and a bunch of Who tie-in novels (including the one this was based on, which was originally a 7th Doctor adventure). Wish he'd written more episodes personally. (I remember back in the late '00s he published a short-story on his blog called "The Last Doctor" as a sort of Christmas present for fans - well worth tracking down IMO, it's out of continuity so doesn't spoil anything but captures a lot of what resonates with me about the character)

"Well he's not getting his beer is he!" Your commentary on these episodes never fail to crack me up! 😂😂😂 This story is my absolute favourite of season 3. I can't wait to see your reaction to part 2. You mentioned that you recognised one of the actors from elsewhere. That happens quite often I think with British actors as our actor pool is pretty small compared to something like America. Case in point, the actors who play Baines and the little balloon girl were in Game of Thrones!

Thomas Brodie-Sangster has been in quite a lot of things since he was a kid. He was the little boy in Love Actually, he was in this, Doctor Who, he voiced Ferb in Phineas and Ferb, Game of Thrones and he was in Queens Gambit. But at this point he wasn't masively known.

I love how the Doctor's diary had some faint drawings of his previous selves from the classic era (in particular i think your highlight clipped an ink drawing of the 8th Doctor, who was the first doctor I ever saw 🥰). This and the second part are amazing, such a deep story. And STILL not yet the best this season has to offer by far - which just speaks volumes of the quality of this season. I hope you've been having a blast with this season and also with Martha as a companion 💖.

I only have one gripe, which is Martha being saddled with unrequited love; something that they've toned down from earlier in the season, but I really wish they'd dropped it entirely. Oh my, how I and everyone I'm sure has been waiting for this one. The Golden Age. (I can see that you're well ahead of this one so I feel it's safe to say that. It's interesting to have comments from 7 minutes ago next to 13 days!) It's amusing you thought for a while that it was an alternative universe, rather than simply The Past. I think that whole boarding school ethos is burned into the British psyche. Teachers in mortar boards, Latin declensions and casual thrashings. The 'little boy' is Thomas Brodie-Sangster. He was in the romantic comedy 'Love Actually', he had a pretty big part in 'Game of Thrones', and he is really excellent in the Disney+ series 'The Artful Dodger', a fun romp and sequel to Oliver Twist, that absolutely no one is talking about.

Harry Lloyd eternally succeeding in the “give the most memorable performance of anything you’re in” challenge. 😂 This two parter is among the best Who stories ever told, arguably the best ever, for a variety of reasons but Lloyd’s performance as The Son elevates the Family to a whole other level as his creepy, sinister, attention grabbing performance just draws you in, especially when contrasted with his earlier, more light hearted, performance as Baines. He is just entertainingly sinister in a story that is otherwise one of the heaviest and most emotionally powerful stories in the entire show’s history.

One of the all-time greats. If you want a miniseries to react to at some point which doesn't go on forever like DW, do try _The_ _Queen's_ _Gambit,_ featuring the actor that plays Tim. It doesn't focus on him, but is well worth anyone's time who cares about drama following interesting characters.
