What's so good about David Tennant's acting is that when he was describing Galifrey at the end of the episode, the look on his face makes it seem as though he was really there, that's what makes it so powerful; almost like he was gonna cry from feeling nostalgia.

I imagine you’ll be pleased to learn that David Tennant spent a good chunk of the filming for this one refusing to put the kittens down. Apparently he got quite attached. The description of Gallifrey and its orange skies and silver forests is taken right from a description the Doctors granddaughter gave way back in the original sixties run of episodes. After this episode went out when I was a kid I remember making a little tree out of tinfoil for my tenth Doctor action figure to sit under so he’d be less homesick.

Yeah this is a solid episode. Difference between Rose and Martha's reactions to past companions is Rose was never in someone else's shadow acting as the rebound while he pines away. Martha is annoyed about how blatant it is that she's just a rebound he isn't interested in. The return of the Face of Bo is a great moment. An ancient being relays a secret to another ancient being. However it's mysterious enough to not be immediately comprehensible. Yeah the description of Gallifrey and his emotions around it are the real highlight though. Silver leaves under an orange sky near a domed city. He makes it sound so majestic.

This episode always has me blubbing - all these people that were resigned to this, the older married couple having been there for over 20 years, seeing the sunlight and getting to fly up and be free sticks with me as one of the most beautiful moments of Doctor Who 🥹 Too bad they flew up to find out everyone else on the planet was dead 💀

I love this episode, David Tennant's acting in this is just amazing. There are some great moments, and that ending is just sublime. The Doctor really hit the nail on the head with the tell don't show philosophy when talking about Gallifrey. It might also interest you to know that the Macra that appeared in this episode are actually very old villains that first appeared in Classic Who. Although in this episode they are mere shells of what they once were. Great reaction by the way, I really like how emotionally invested you are. I can't help but shed a tear when the Face of Boe dies, even though we barely know him.

I feel like it says a lot about the writers for this era of Doctor Who that they made an episode based around a comically exaggerated traffic jam, and apart from making it into an emotional roller coaster on its own, he also managed to write in the Face of Boe's death scene (that was actually originally going to be in New Earth, by the way), and also have this be the point where Martha decides she's not just going to blindly follow the script and gets the Doctor to talk to her honestly. And I find it really impressive that they did it all at a breakneck pace without wasting time or dropping any of those spinning plates.
@DiamondzFinder_

This episode always left quite an impression on me. The way the Doctor talking about Gallifrey, the way he gets so mad when Martha gets abducted. Martha pointing out the Doctor having a "rebound" is totally true, but even still Martha show she has faith in him. And of course, seeing The Head of Bo for the last time def got me emotional. "You Are Not Alone", what does that mean? On a different note, this is one of the surprisingly few examples of an explicitly non straight couple or even character, so that's something. Love this one for sure

I'd forgotten how good this episode is. So emotional and Martha's realisation that they're visiting places he's been with Rose is just ouch. The monologue at the end with the Doctor talking about Galifrey and the Time War is such sterling acting from David Tennant.. And the death of the Face of Boe just kills me. Brannigan is played by Ardal O'Hanlon, a well known Irish comedian and I remember thinking when I first saw the episode, 'hang on, I know that voice' but it took me a while to realise who it was under the cat makeup. Good stuff as always, Jules - I knew you'd love the kittens :)

God the irony and theming of sunlight in this episode just cuts so deep the adoring speech about his home "the burnt orange sky" that he cant return to, the hopeful singing from the passangers trapped in the undercity, the people freed seeing the sun for the first time as boe sees it for the last and that beautifully performed speech from tennant about galifrey with the hopeful music uncercutting it as he talks the music overflows and takes over as we see the burnt orange sky of new new york. Utterly fantastic and heart breaking. Great video keep em coming ❤

I swear this episode is completely underrated. It’s never talked about among the greats and it’s a shame. I'll admit I rather underestimated this episode at the time as a "silly Ardal O'hanlon with a silly cat face in a silly traffic jam" thing. But if you just ignore all that and only look at that last scene (especially compared to the first scene), you actually get a pivotal arc for Martha as someone who demands to be _acknowledged_ - and not just as a surrogate for someone who came before. Llooking back at it now, that whole "sit down and properly _talk_ to me!" might possibly my favourite moment between my favourite Doctor and companion pairing! 🥰

I think this is a great capstone to the Face of Boe/New Earth trilogy. It's great how, despite this being our second trip to New Earth, it feels so different to our previous trip there. The plot feels like something from a dystopian '70s sci-fi novel, full of social commentary, and there's a genuine, tactile threat about it, especially with Martha being kidnapped. The Macra are such a random deep cut and I love that they were included here. 😆 They only actually appeared in a single classic Who story - a Second Doctor story from 1967 called 'The Macra Terror' - but back then they were actually intelligent, so it's interesting seeing these primitive versions that have devolved over time. Of course, the heart(s) of the story is Martha forcing the Doctor to talk about Gallifrey. David Tennant is just perfect when he talks fondly about Gallifrey, he manages to convey so many emotions at once. You have to imagine that some of his fanboyness was shining through there. As for the Face of Boe, we may have hardly known him, but we went on a journey with him and his death is so sad. Then there's that cryptic message: "You are not alone...". Hmm...I wonder what that could mean. 🤔 Oh and as a cat lover Jules, you might be pleased to know that the Sixth Doctor actually wore a cat brooch as part of his costume; the final story of classic Who actually heavily revolved around cats; and in the novels of the '90s, the Seventh Doctor actually had a cat in the TARDIS for a time.

Juliette, I don't know if anyone has clued you in yet, but the couple in old fashioned garb at the beginning are from a very famous painting called American Gothic. If you search for "American Gothic" you'll get a good look at them. Now the question of why Doctor Who decided to put them in at the beginning of this episode is anyone's guess. haha So, in the future, humans will be able to reproduce with "cats". Maybe better to not think about that too much.🤪

I was looking to see if anyone else caught the American Gothic reference!😄Kudos! While a student at the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago I worked daily in the museum next door sometimes spending eight to ten hours in the America’s wing in the gallery with Grant Wood’s painting!😊 I think the man in the Bowler hat, and suit on the Expressway that the Doctor encounters in this episode may have been reference to surrealist René Magritte who frequently painted subjects in this garb in his dreamlike paintings, and other characters loosely related to other paintings/artist. Just a theory- haven’t researched it! 😄⏱️🌌🟦Cheers- Jameson

For a Face you've only seen in 3 episodes (4 if you count the cameo in The Long Game), they really do an amazing job of making The Face of Boe feel like an old friend, both to The Doctor and to the audience, setting us up for the perfect emotional gut punch when he sacrifices himself to save all those trapped people. But of course, not without one last cryptic parting statement... And then we get the emotional double whammy with The Doctor talking about Gallifrey. The misty-eyed expression as he recalls the silver trees under orange skies with such clarity. He can remember every detail like it was yesterday, even though he's over 900 years old. He must wish so desperately to see it again. I always enjoyed the side-characters in this episode too, such as Novice Hame and Brannigan. Lastly, I also really like Martha taking a stand and demanding a little respect and honesty from The Doctor. She deserves that much. You might want to look up the behind the scenes show Doctor Who Confidential for this episode, since as someone else has said there's more footage of David Tennant cuddling kittens.

One of the advantages of having a fan for showrunner: those Crabs answered a request for a visible antagonist. Russell suggested Second Doctor monsters The Macra - who could live in the fumes of an industrial colony, thus the bottom of this freeway.
@gestaltdude
@gestaltdude 8 ай бұрын
To clarify a point someone has already made...The Macra appeared in the Second Doctor story The Macra Terror. They lived of certain gases poisonous to humans, hence they're living at the bottom of the motor way. In Troughton's era they had conquered a human colony, forcing the human to mine a gas found on the planet, as well as the occasional human. As noted in this episode, they devolved from the intelligent species they used to be to become a race of predators that operate purely on instinct. A little side note is that The Macra Terror was the first story to use the once traditional title sequence featuring the current Doctor's face. :D And a casting note about the next two episodes...Without giving away any spoilers, once of the supporting characters is played by an actor who went on to feature in one of the most critically and commercially acclaimed Marvel movies of all time. I really, really wish I could tell you more, but I believe you will be positively delighted when you see this actor for the first time. :D

This was a mediocre episode until the end where Martha said cut the crap and talk to me like an adult. Then the doctor finally opened up rather than just kept running from adventure to adventure. One of the many reasons I adore Martha, she not only doesn’t take his crap, but she will flat out tell him to act right. Just what he needs. And yeah the doctor holding a kitty with a ribbon around her neck is so stinking adorable it’s nigh criminal.

I was looking forward to when you got this this one and what your theories would be regarding the meaning of the Face of Boe's last words. There are definitely a few possibilities so you'll have to see how that turns out. It was interesting hearing the Doctor describe Gallifrey and the Time Lord Citadel (along with how Martha imagined the architecture) while thinking about the cheap sets and models used in the classic series, as well as how now they're all gone the Doctor is remembering his people in a very nostalgic light compared to how his relationship with them when they were around had always been... complicated.

I guess we will have to wait and see what Boe means by his cryptic message 🤔 it could really mean several things and I'm looking forward to one day finding out more! It was very sad to say goodbye to Boe... I really liked him 😢

They spend.a.k t of time with our 3 barn cats. The ducklings are getting rather large. I may have to start calling them ducks. Have a wonderful rest of your week.

Very minor thing, but the Macra are a classic Who villain from a fairly obscure 2nd Doctor serial - The Macra Terror. They're sapient in that one, while they're more bestial here.

David Tennant does SUCH a good job at portraying the loneliness and sadness in The Doctor. When he talks about Gallifrey, you really get the feeling that he truly did love that planet. And the way Freema portrays Martha is just perfect. I really love the dynamic between them both.

So long ago, I had forgotten about "You are not alone". The Macra are a callback to a really old episode "The Macra Terror" from 1967. I do recall being a bit disappointed that the story did nothing with them except make them into the big scary CGI monsters living under all the traffic.

The way the Doctor talks about Galifrey in the RTD era is really interesting because it’s such a break from how it was presented in the Classic Who era of the first eight Doctors. In those days, the Doctor always tended to have an “omg what do you knobheads want *now?* 🙄” attitude whenever other Time Lords were part of the story or he was summoned back home. It went from being a very generic place that happened to be the Doctor’s home where everyone wore big silly hats and were very angry at him all the time for being a very naughty boy, to somewhere talked about in ethereal or godlike terms. 9 and 10 have a lot more open reverence for Galifrey, because when they speak about it you picture this wise, ancient, noble place where peace was maintained and even it physically sounds like heaven. But now it’s gone, reapers can infect time wounds and travel between parallel worlds is impossible. And to a certain extent, you can understand why as everyone has rose tinted glasses for people, times and places when they were at their best yet in spite of everything we saw in Classic Who, the loss of Galifrey on the Doctor is a clear and profound one as he deeply wishes they were back. There’s just a mystery and aura to Galifrey that only came about at the start of this era because as much as the Doctor was a free spirit and didn’t conform to the rules of their society, it was still his home and its loss on him as the Last of the Time Lords weighs on him heavily and is what keeps him travelling while also being so focused on the Earth, because it’s the only home he has left.

The ending is what immediately got me loving Martha more as a companion over Rose, for me anyway. Think it’s real smart and strong of her to ask for the truth. Rose just let the Doctor kinda wash over her and go along with him and his secrets. In the End of the World episode, there was a brief row between Rose and the Doctor when she was like “Tell me who you are” and Nine snapped back and kept his walls up. Martha gave him no choice, pulled up a chair and was like “Mate no secrets, be honest with me” and Ten does decide to lower his walls and open up. Great ending, good episode too, real fun, Brannigan is so much fun, Novice Hame is wonderful, the Macra even though not the biggest deal in the episode were great to see again returning as classic Who enemies from the Second Doctor’s era.

Who-heeey, congratulations! You've finally got there! Having tears while watching Who. Like, remember back in season 1 when the farting aliens were trying to take over the world? Would you have believed back then, at that moment, that this is gonna be one of those shows that slowly but surely will pull you in... really nice, quiet and soft.... and then hit ya with the actual emotion bomb? I for one didn't, I just expected this to be one of those silly adventure series. ...And that's how the show gets you. It lets you come in, near and close, and then it stabs your heart when you least expect it, and even twists the knife a bit on a good day.

If the Judoon a couple of episodes ago were a nod to Judge Dredd, this one is evn.more deliberately so. From the gridlocked traffic in a highrise megacity full of odd folk, to a cameo inspired by Max Normal the Pinstripe Freak, plus the holographic travel news lady was inspired by Swifty Frisko from Halo Jones, as also seen in 2000AD.
