IMO the Midnight creature is one of the most terrifying aliens on the show. Not because of a monstrous appearance or plans for world domination but because of its capacity for psychological warfare. It nearly succeeded in killing the Doctor by weaponizing the worst in people.

suncore598 Same! What makes it even better is that even the Doctor doesn't know what it is. Like it's this creature that lives on a planet that nothing is supposed to be able to live on with strange abilities that he didn't understand.

Agreed. It's terrifying because it fights him on his own level and it's one of the few enemies to do that, it exposes some uncomfortable truths about who he is (because there _is_ an underlying arrogance to him and he _does_ basically expect people to do what he says because he's clever) and turns words, traditionally one of the Doctor's most powerful weapons, into a weakness. Fantastic episode.

I think condemning and hating the other passengers as just being stupid assholes is missing the fundamental point of the episode. These people WEREN'T assholes, not really. We know they were all perfectly nice, regular people based on the conversations the Doctor had with them before that thing attacked. And the monster didn't do anything to make them fight, it just said that to make them more paranoid. The point isn't to show their flaws as individuals, but to show the flaws that arise in any individual, and especially in any crowd, when it's confused and afraid. It's not just an immigration thing or a terrorism thing or whatever, it's a very general way to comment on the fact that humans, like any other animals, ultimately tend to resort to violence and self-preservation when they're backed into a corner and they don't know what to do. The Doctor has always believed in the best of mankind, has always fought for and trusted in the ultimate worthwhile goodness of the human spirit, that's why he's so fond of Earth specifically. But in this episode, he's brought face to face with the fact that humans, as a species, regardless of individual traits, AREN'T always kind, or clever, or generous. Sure, this is juxtaposed with the hostess sacrificing herself to save the Doctor and everyone on-board, but the fact that nobody had even found out her name during the entire journey belies yet another inherent flaw that people often exhibit. Basically, the Doctor has to deal not just with a freak voice-stealer, but he also has to face the worst of mankind's natural urges, and it's pretty telling that, out of all the situations he's been in, THIS one probably got him more angry and frustrated and scared than so many of the others. It's also the only time the Doctor basically LOST in the end. He was completely, utterly helpless, and would have been thrown out into the planet and burned to ash if not for the hostess's self-sacrifice.

Couldn't agree more. Midnight, to me, is basically a Black Mirror episode without the technology. It shows how susceptible people are to falling prey to fear/paranoia and mob mentality. I can definitely understand why the guys found the passengers to be despicable but don't think it was down to bad writing/bad characters. The episode just demonstrates how shitty people can be when they're afraid.

This episode made me utterly terrified and so stressed. I was on the edge of my seat, covered in sweat - it was like I was on that bus too. I only realised how stressed it had made me after it ended when I realised I had been gripping the edge of the chair the entire time and my hand hurt. Literally the only other episode that scared me and gave me such a physical reaction was The Waters of Mars. To see the Doctor so helpless and scared, not able to use his intelligence or charm to calm everyone down, literally losing his voice and his own free will, it really ramped up the tension and the threat to the Doctor. He was so vulnerable and afraid, it's not something you see often from the Doctor. And David Tennant's acting is amazing! It's an incredible episode with incredible writing that explores the psychology of mob mentality and the different reactions we are capable of during times of extreme stress. Everyone likes to claim that they'd be the level-headed one, protecting the innocent, but the truth is none of us know how we'd react until we're in an extreme situation. An unfortunately some people turn into monsters and self-preserving arseholes!

I can't believe this has only just hit me, but David Troughton's character Professor Hobbes appears to be a deliberate reference to Thomas Hobbes, the philosopher. My opinion that this episode was one of the best because the monster/villain of this episode wasn't exactly the copy-cat creature. It was human fear and paranoid and what human beings are capable of when they faced with that fear. It's like that line from the Joker in The Dark Knight. "their morals, their code, it's a bad joke. This is an excellent episode! It has the right amount of tension and claustrophobia with a bit of a creepy factor too. I think the way the passengers reacted all hysterically by jumping to conclusions and constantly arguing with fear, anger and the drive to save their own skin was very realistic. It also had The Doctor being helpless which added that necessary scare factor and made the tension of the scenario so freaking good. The hostess was a true hero! Can’t wait for Turn Left! One of the best episodes and my personal favourites! It was companion lite this week but next week is the next Doctor lite story! I’m so excited because we’re getting so close to the finale! As far as I remember, the actress playing the mysterious lifeform learn every line that she had to repeat/synchronise so when they are talking at the beginning she was genuinely speaking *every single* line of dialogue at the same time (at least in the beginning)

One of my favourite this one and it is for a lot of people I'd guess. The atmosphere, the acting, the editing, the storybeats, the huis-clos aspect, the subtext... everything is on point there !

Didn't expect them to recognise Colin (Jethro) from Merlin. Unfortunately that means they've already seen it, so we won't see it here.

This, by far, is one of the most creepiest Doctor Who episodes ever. It shows just how horrible humans can be when they are reacting out of fear and how easily people succumb to the 'mob mentality'.

I think these are the most realistic background characters out of any episode of Doctor Who. Most episodes of Doctor Who have characters who just go along with it. If something like this happened in real life then people would start to act like they did here. I'm sure what some things you guys were saying was for comedic effect, but for people who enjoy shows like Game of Thrones you really had a black and white viewpoint of this episode.

The show has sometimes made the point that the worst and most dangerous species in the universe is the human race, and it's never seemed convincing until this episode. A hundred thousand Daleks: no problem for the Doctor. A group of stroppy humans who are freaking out, and the Doctor is completely screwed.

It would depend on which humans I'd be getting stuck with. If it was, say, a group of the current Republican politicians I'd probably opt for the Daleks.

i can't recall the full plot of many RTD era eps (not bc i dont like them its just been so long) but this one i can recall like the back of my hand bc its so memorable and smart and just amazing, i might change my mind on RTD rewatch but i think this is my fav ep of that era. The writing is genius and the limited set and lack of vfx just adds to the claustrophobic tension and i just love it. its a true statement on mob mentality and ganging up on the smartest person in the room and the look on the doctors face when he loses control of his body and voice and those people are sending him off to his death still haunts me to this day dude

Fun fact, the bottle episode thing actually made it really easy for a group of students to re-create the episode for a play. It's on KZbin somewhere, I think they cut the son out and redistributed his lines out to other characters, it works really well. Now here's the thing. It's something the show doesn't deal with often, but the facts are that the Doctor is this really clever person, who can make speeches at the drop of a hat, who takes glee in the unknown and the horrific and will usually (This incarnation at least) move on and continue to joke and joke despite all the deaths and horrible stuff going on. Now, that's all fine and dandy for, say, a forty five minute episode where we get to see little snippets of their adventure. But if you were really stuck in a situation like that and SO many coincidences pile up? Yeah. The people were ABSOLUTELY in the wrong, but I cut them the tiniest bit of slack because we have access to information that they don't. Also, the old man? Related to the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

People are not giving this episode the reaction/acknowledgment it deserves. This episode was brilliantly constructed and directed. It was able to highlight human nature and show how fear of the unknown can affect peoples judgment and behaviour. By showing scenes of The Doctor communicating with each passengers, it presents the knowledge that these people are pleasant, they are not crazy, insane, stupid or should raise any cause of concern. Fear can make people who are deemed as 'normal' to behave in ways that in hindsight can be classified as 'wrongful'. It doesn't take a big scary monster to stimulate emotions of aggression or violence. A tiny seed of doubt is just as dangerous. Everyone is at risk
