I think many people don't realize what it means that the Doctor is found dead at the start of the episode. The soldier assumes it happened too fast for him to regenerate, but in the Christmas special he had plenty of time. We know he's mourning Rose's disappearance and died. Not because it happened too fast, but because Donna wasn't there to tell him to stop. That's basically suicide.

One thing Shane touched upon a little bit during the episode, but didn't come up during the discussion afterward, is that the Donna we're seeing these events happen to is one that didn't have the same character development she gained with The Doctor. So when Eric joke about sometimes not being able to stand Donna.. that's the point. Its the old loud, obnoxious, brash Donna. But then in this universes she's shaped by these new experiences, worn down by the horror and depression of the things happening to be more thoughtful and reserved like in the correct universe. That's also how the "saving the world with a traffic jam" thing works. Donna knows that her older self is shallow enough to make her decision which way to turn by wanting to avoid a traffic jam. Although, one could take a darker reading and say that Donna would rather kill herself than live through the bad reality again.

Great reaction! I’m pleased you guys enjoyed this! It’s one of the best episodes of the series. It’s heartbreaking to see how bleak everything becomes in the parallel world. The fact that Sarah Jane, Martha, Torchwood and every other fighter lose their lives in protecting the Earth is sad. Even the mere mentions of Maria, Clyde and everyone is shocking. The reveal of the labour camps hurts my soul with the realisation of horrible history repeating itself and Rose has the role of The Doctor in this episode, even using some of his mannerisms. The stars going out always gives me chills and goosebumps because it’s so eery and terrifying. Catherine Tate was brilliant in this episode, especially in the scene with Donna seeing the bug and breaking down emotionally. I really loved the scenes between her and Rose. Wilf is awesome and you can literally see the life draining from Donna’s mother as every bleak situation makes a turn for the worse. Calling her daughter a disappointment was the last straw for her. I love how Calvin and Aaron have kept the cool act throughout this series about Rose. Even distracting Eric and Shane through the titles was perfect! Eric really enjoyed this which was awesome to see! The fortune Teller and Time Beetle are members of the Trickster’s brigade. Their leader is the Trickster. The Trickster is an immortal extra dimensional alien who alters history to feed on chaos. He’s a regular villain on The Sarah Jane Adventures and a personal nemesis to Sarah Jane. Since you guys are only watching the first three SJA episodes, you sadly won’t ever get to meet him which is a shame. The hype for the finale two parter is REAL THOUGH! I’m so excited for The Stolen Earth and Journeys End reactions! I’M SO HYPED AND READY FOR THEM! AAAAAHHH! :D

What makes this kind of "parallel universe/alternate timeline" stories interesting is that it shows the world that you know and love... but with the safeties off! When you watch Doctor Who or read DC or Marvel comics, you don't ACTUALLY expect the villain to successfully take over/destroy/assimilate the planet/universe. It's like there's a "plot armor" that keeps the universe safe and also keeps the different genres from crossing over one another (that's why Batman doesn't USUALLY fights inter-dimensionnal demons or why you dont see Spider-Man drop in on NETFLIX's The Punisher). Alternate futures or What-If stories allow you to see those universes without the plot armor.
@Wolf61196 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that everything that happened in this episode, with that lady and her scarab, was a completely random occurrence. Everything that just happened, and everything that's been set into motion as a result, it didn't happen because of some evil plan or some external force, it literally just happened by chance because some lady wanted to scam Donna. Then again, is anything really a coincidence with Donna Noble?
@Pure_L186 жыл бұрын
I mean, there is that one character who said that they were influencing events in time to ensure the outcome of the season finale. That might have led to this meeting.
@Drakespawn856 жыл бұрын
It was no coincidence and it wasn't about Donna in the first place, but the one serious hint they give is just so small it's easily missed: The Doctor mentions the beetle is part of the Trickster's Brigade. Without spoiling "future" (from the perspective of this reaction series) episodes from any of the Who-related shows, let's just say that this name will come up again. And the mentioning of the "Brigade" also allows the conclusion that all this was most likely specifically intended to kill the Doctor by removing Donna from the Racnoss-Incident.
@bobafettish6602896 жыл бұрын
it's not a random occurance. it's actually a really cool bootstrap paradox. so the trickster's brigade (those respionsible for this ep) mess with timelines, to draw power from the chaos created. their goal is to create enough power to bring their leader the trickster back at full power. they often mess with small things that wouldn't make too big a difference like the doctor said but they do try and target moments that have big effects on the timeline. greater the chaos the more power they get. (e.g in torchwood season 4 there's a small sub plot in a flashback of the trickster's brigade trying to interefere with usa's involvement in ww2) donna's significane is huge becuase of what happens in the finale. so they detect that and target her. however them trying to alter her timeline in the first place is what leads to donna's significance. the trickster's brigade's interference is what allows rose to warn the doctor(via donna) leading to doctor donna saving the universe. if they didn't interfere, the doctor wouldn't have realised what the daleks were doing soon enough to stop them.

Such a good episode! Brilliantly written, intricately plotted, and emotionally devastating. It makes you realise just how important the companions are to the story, the Doctor, and the universe as a whole. Even though it's an alternate Donna and an alternate timeline, it helps explain how Donna ended up with the issues she has - Sylvia's emotional abuse. Nothing Donna does is ever good enough for Sylvia. She rarely shows any affection towards Donna. Always picking apart everything she says and does. Even when civilisation is crumbling around them and most families would be coming together and putting their issues aside, Sylvia tells Donna she's given up on her and agrees that Donna's always been a disappointment. Sylvia's treatment of Donna has destroyed Donna's self worth so much that she flat out doesn't believe that there is any way she could save the world, or that a super intelligent alien would choose to be her friend, travel with her, and think she's brilliant. That universe is put out of it's misery by Donna's bravery and sacrifice, and that version of Sylvia never knew how incredible her daughter really was. Donna's entire character is so tragic and heartbreaking. And Catherine Tate, once again, shows what an incredible actress she is!

The left-hand side of road travel direction is the oldest way as well as the most convenient way and the custom goes right back to Roman civilisation due to most people being right-handed. Through almost two-thousand years, one would have travelled the roads on horseback using the left-hand side and any on-coming riders using the same road travelling in the opposite direct would use their left-hand side. Using the roads this way left you the capability to either greet your oncoming traveller with an extended handshake of friendship using your right hand to meet the other in the middle... or if you were unfortunate to come across some not-so-friendly folk out to rob or kill you, you could draw your sword with ease using your right-hand (scabbards and saddles with sword suspensions issued with the military were worn on the left) to defend yourself _properly_ without having to awkwardly lean over the horse's neck and saddle. Most of the world rode/drove on the left and the tradition was passed on when the motor car came to be the main source of transport. The only reason why the US changed from left to right was down to Napoleon's defiance during the European and the North/South Americas wars. So it's all down to a little petulant dictating Frenchman that reaching over awkwardly and fumbling around on the road after 2000 years of a logical and working system, is now a thing for you over there.

Donna had to be the one to go back and set things right because if Rose or anyone else had gone it would have just created a paradox since that version of reality would have never existed so they would never have existed and couldn’t have gone back to change it. However, Donna had the beetle on her back which created the parallel universe so she used it’s power to avoid the paradox occurring. Or that’s at least my best guess 🙈

One of my favorite lines by Donna... Wilf: "Come on Donna, you're not going to make the world better by shouting at it." Donna: "I can try." It just really explains your psyche and why shouting is her defense mechanism.

I don't know if this had anything to do with the planning of this episode, or maybe an Idea, but in the episode "The Fires of Pompeii" there was a scene where some people had gotten temporary sight to the future and one said, "Daughter of London, You have something on your back." And I didn't connect it to this episode until the last time I watched it, I think it is an interesting concept if they knew this episode was going to happen when that one was being written.

Martha Jones and Sarah Jane were heroes .. the heart of who they always were. Without Martha how was the world not taken over by the Carrionites in Shakespeare's time? Those camps were chilling.. and a powerful reminder of what humans are capable of, even today. I loved that man who welcomed them into the house. Reminded me of the one who wouldn't kneel to Loki. Real life Heroic.

It’s been like 10 years nearly since I first watched this episode but it’s still one of my favourite episodes of any show I’ve ever watched, the lack of the Doctor was so well done, which I guess just shows how well Donna has grown as a character and actually the lack of Donna in the episode before was so well done that you kinda forget about them in each episode cause the story is that excited and intriguing, can’t wait for the guys to watch the rest of the series!

I kind of want to defend Sylvia Noble. Yes, she isn't a very supportive mom - she's hard on Donna because, like Donna, she thinks that shouting at the world might make it better. But by the end when she agrees that Donna was a disappointment, she seems full-on clinically depressed. I'm not sure she's a bad mom there - she's just so sick with grief that she's incapable of caring anymore. Also, I'm pretty sure this or the next episode was my first exposure to Doctor Who. I was on a plane to London in early 2009 and they had an episode of Doctor Who available to watch. You could imagine I was *very confused* seeing one of these episodes out of context XD

I know I can't make them like her, but it makes me sad that even in the biggest of Donna based episodes, this lot just bang on about Rose all the time still. They give vaguely positive comments like 'I like how she grew with the doctor', but there's never an appreciation of what an incredible character Donna was and how bloody awesome Tate's performance is. Each to their own - but it's the one thing that I've felt sad about watching Season 4 through Blind Wave's eyes.
@Fanatic_Foremem6 жыл бұрын
I feel like Eric and Calvin like her alot, Shane's the only one who's iffy. Sure they don't seem to think she's the best, but I doubt they think Rose is the best either, they're just excited because a character they thought they wouldn't be seeing again is back.

Other reactors to this episode have focused on Donna’s journey, but she got hardly spoken about again. As it happens Shane is the one who stated how much he liked her character’s development with the doctor..!

I do wish they had watched the Genesis of the Daleks original series (They got the DVDs in one of their mailbag episodes after the finished season 3!) before they got to this point. Their reaction in episode 4x12 when everything finally clicked back together would have been fan-friggin-tastic. And no, this isn't a spoiler for them, since they've already watched 4x12, it's on early access on their website. Oh well, I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it anyways.
