Reminds me of a couple Twilight Zone episodes related to the Red Scare. Paranoia during the Cold War inspired stories like this. I wonder was there anything comparable at the time that inspired this. Like the war on terror or something else at the time.

If you listen carefully as soon as the Doctor says ‘you need me, if we’re going to get out of this you need me’ Sky stops repeating everyone else. And Deedee says earlier that there’s an air pressure seal on the door that takes six seconds to break down so the stewardess literally needed to be grabbing onto her for six seconds to make sure she actually got sucked out. Nice little commentary on air staff I like to think, she was treated like crap the entire journey more or less and still sacrifices her life and does her duty to save her passengers

@@obiwankenobi687The Doctor actually dismisses the notion that the ‘monster’ chose just to repeat him because he is the smartest person in the ‘room’ . The ‘monster’ feeds on fear, this is why it chose the Doctor at that moment. Without Donna he had completely lost control of the situation.

i don't think it's the humans he has always known people can be savage i think it's more he doesn't normally run into creatures he can't explain or beat so first encounter with some lifeform that effortlessly invaded his body and mind while living on one of the most inhospitable worlds most likely felt very off-putting especially when he only survived because one women was smart and selfless.

@@lordsathariel4384Well this is probably the closest he’s ever been to a real, final death. He wouldn’t have been able to regenerate, and was mere seconds from being thrown out before it took another person’s literal sacrifice to save him. The monster wasn’t what would have killed him, it didn’t even touch him, it just manipulated scared, angry humans into doing it themselves. And it nearly succeeded. That’s what terrified him

This is an excellent representation of cosmic horror. You never really understand what the threat is. It’s plays on the fear of the unknown, and the unknown is more frightening than any monster design you could imagine. It’s also a great exploration into different types of characters who each have their own responses to unknown threats. Mob mentality is a real phenomenon and even in a small group it can take hold in times of great stress and fear.

I adore Midnight. As a place, a concept, and an episode. It's mysterious, fascinating, and terrifying. The fact we never figure out what the hell is going on with this... THING. We never figure out what it is, the Doctor doesn't either. It reminds me of something The Doctor said in his second incarnation. "There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things."

I think the fact this very much a bottle episode is why some people don't chime with it. While it is inconsequential to the overarching mystery of Season 4, it could be deemed as filler. However, it's deeper than that. As a treatise on humanity's inhumanity to humanity, it's powerful stuff, and an episode that genuinely terrified my daughter, who was 10 at the time. It's also interesting to note that the amount of dialogue is unusual to you, as a lot of British television uses dialogue more readily than action set-pieces, as seems to be more common on American TV. Personally, I think this is a strong episode with a great cast (Lesley Sharp, who plays Sky, was something of an RTD regular, appearing in both Bob and Rose and The Second Coming, both written by Mr Davies himself). Lindsay Coulson, who plays Jethro's mum, was instantly recognisable to the majority of UK viewers as Carole Jackson from EastEnders, a role she still plays to this day (I think). Of course, there's also David 'Son-of-Patrick' Troughton as Professor Hobbes. In short, this is a highlight of Season 4 for a lot of people, and it's unfortunate that it didn't appeal to you. Especially as the unknowability of the entity is kind of the point of it, in a way.

This is one of my favourite episodes. The psychological horror here is next level. Nothing horrific to look at, just something taking control of people and manuplating the worst instincts of humanity. But I think that my favourite thing about this one is the total lack of explanation. We still have no idea what that was, or even if it is completely gone.

This episode is such a masterclass in characterisation. You feel like you know these characters’ life stories, goals, morals, personalities etc from such a tiny story. They feel real and it’s crazy Russel managed it for 7 one off characters. Not to mention a super creative and genuinely chilling villain, with absolutely no explanation needed. And on a single set with almost 0 special effects. Just brilliant writing, real acting, and a phenomenal audio mix. Still one of my all time favourites Generic Spoilers: I see this as such a dichotomy to the Chibnall era. If I had to summarise everything the newer series are missing, it would be this episode as a perfect package.

This is a double banking episode (as is the next one). These are episodes with a small part for the Doctor and companion (like "Blink" and "Love and Monsters") or, in this case, where one is focused on the Doctor and one on the companion. They are filmed at the same time as another episode.

It's not just about how people can be affected by their own fear and turn violent, but also about how easily they can be manipulated. At first the Doctor was a beacon of hope for the group and they all saw it... mostly. But then, as soon as a little seed of doubt was planted, the mob mentality took over and they were manipulated to the point where they saw him as the bad guy. This is an extremely important point that the episode was making: How quickly and easily can someone manipulate us due to our fear and ignorance? Are any of us immune to that..?

I would argue that just because throwing her out worked and ended the danger doesn't mean it was _right_ or _justified_ . That's like saying if killing the thief stops him committing theft, then it's the right thing to do. We don't actually know what this entity was, what it wanted, what it was trying to do. Throwing her out was being police, judge, and executioner all in one go. That's not _right_ .

This such a great episode, basically one set, no big effects just a well written script around a clever idea. Loved it & feel a bit sad it doesn't get the love it deserves. The episode exposes one of humanities weaknesses & that is the herd mentality & how fear makes us jump so quickly to anything that makes us feel safe, even if it is a lie we made up. 23:49 I will give this woman 1 little bit of respect that she realised what she was & felt a moments shame but again retreated into her denial of what she is.

One absolutely amazing thing about this already incredible episode is at the end, the Doctor was basically overpowered by this unseen entity and feels guilty that someone was sacrificed to save everyone else. So when Donna tries making light of the situation by repeating one of the Doctor's catchphrases we get him delivering his usual line of "Don't do that, just don't" but this time you feel the emotional weight behind the delivery, like this has left a serious emotional scar on him. Also, we're getting so close to my personal favorite episode overall and I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it 😁

26:20 To be very fair to the creature its whole thing is copying and learning from what it saw. So its first thing copied personality wise was the prideful, prejudice humanity who immediately only thought of helping themselves. The creature saw humans worrying about their survival so it did the same making it have to take drastic measures to ensure it stayed alive just as they were willing to do with the door. The dad was making it about them vs us so the creature immediately saw its self as its own side so it thought i gotta get the attention on someone else. So it did making the Doctor the main focus so everyone would see it as on their side. The humans that took offence to being called dumb showing pride now the creature is feeling pride in the fact it has tricked them. These people who consider themselves intelligent it has tricked them! I think thats why it asked the professor to pick it up first. It was seeing if it could get the smartest man in the room other than the doctor to fall for the trick first and he did. And the fear it was copying was the driving emotion of it all its hiding it for the trick but it clearly feared the cold and the dark of the outside.

I think this episode it’s one of the scariest ones because it’s so damn realistic. Of a bunch of people were trapped in one placed for many hours and with danger coming after them. This is one of my favorite episodes most likely because of how unique it is. It’s one of the few genuinely frightening/creepy episodes and it feels somewhat realistic in terms of how people are likely to react when frightened. Now I will say somewhat in defense of the people the Doctor felt a bit naive in retrospect like they were spot on when they said he was essentially doing nothing but claimed he could contain the entity when they got back as that seemed highly unlikely. Also, yes he told them to shut up and they didn’t BUT he also wouldn’t shut up either. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tennant is on top form in this episode. Definitely one of if not his best performance during his time on the show.

I love this episode, it’s very much a “What would happen if The Twilight Zone and Doctor Who had a baby?” type story. For me, it’s a chamber piece, watching some really talented actors match off and do it impeccably. It reminds me so much of Blink at times, that uneasy feeling just keeps building until the horror is revealed. And what’s the true horror? When it comes to a crisis, it’s us, look how fast we turn and how quickly we look to blame. Good stuff.

One of my favorite episodes - like you say: mostly just talking, but it makes for one of the most creepy & tense episodes! I don't know what gives me more chills: the 'creature' itself & it's motives, or the fact that the Doctor has no idea what it is & is essentially helpless!

1:40 I’m sorry this was not one of “fun time” episodes. Probably one of more creepiest episodes 😅 It’s both a favorite and yet it puts me on edge, 😂

If you can get one of your main characters out of the show for a episode it makes the show cheaper. Same as their are few Doctor scenes in 'Turn Left'

While I think this one was well-done, and I can understand why people who like it a lot do so. It is the most Twilight Zone like episode of DW, and reminds me a lot of Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. Nonetheless it is not one of my favorites. It's fine, just wanted something more to go with it.
