I love the Ood. Even when they're enslaved and fighting for their freedom, they still find capacity for compassion in your hearts when they let Halburn stay with them once he's turned into an Ood. They really are an exceptionally kind species. As for having the external hindbrain, it's probably linked to their psychic ability. They literally carry their emotions and memories around in their hands to make it easier to communicate and trust each other. Presumably, if they had just been hanging out on an empty ice planet with no predators, they would have to find ways to create a very intertwined society in order to thrive, and telepathy would help with that a lot.

I believe they mean they will take care of him as in kill him lol. They say they can't harm humans but since they turned him Ood they could deal with him.

Should let the crew know, Lono - the Sensesphere actually showed up WAY back in the first season of the show, in the 5th story; it featured a race very similar to the Ood called the Sensorites (and the story was called "The Sensorites), who were a telepathic race of sorts. While it's kind of a forgotten story, it's also the one story that lets Carol Anne Ford stretch her muscles as Susan... as well as first mentioning how Gallifrey, STILL unnamed by the writers then, was described with its "burnt orange" sky and such. It still amuses me how after we saw Classic!Who Gallifrey with a normal blue sky (or at least the Deathzone in "The Five Doctors"), RTD actually fixed things when the show was revived!

The intro was awesome! Glad you brought it back! :D I love this episode. The scenes that really stand out to me include Donna’s reaction to the Ood song as well as the scene with both The Doctor and Donna defending the Ood after witnessing their slavery. The scene with Halpen turning into an Ood was also very disturbing and it still is to this day. Donna’s reaction was perfect and the way she told The Doctor how she can’t tell what’s right or what’s wrong when being him was completely accurate and pretty much sums up most of The Doctor’s experiences. The song of captivity and freedom are such beautiful tracks. Also the “I think your song must end soon” moment made me sad :(
@tree15682 жыл бұрын
There are some DW episodes that make me cry and this is one. When Donna hears the music, Murray Hold just conveys the sadness so beautifully. It’s called ‘Songs of Captivity and Freedom’ and as a teenager I learnt to play it on the violin along with ‘This is Gallifrey’ because they’re so beautiful

The Ood made their debut in the revived series, in the Satan Pit two parter. The Sense-Sphere line is a reference to an early First Doctor story, The Sensorites. Similarly to the Ood, the Sensorites are a telepathic race. They are also the first non-humanoid race to appear in the series who weren't all evil.

That's not how evolution works... there is no 'must' or 'need', evolution itself has no intent... intent is what scientist assign to it to give it meaning we can identify. However useless or disadvantage one might think a particular trait may be... as long as it isn't in an environment where they will die from the trait, the trait will pass on until it does encounter what it cannot cope with. And once you reach certain level of awareness... you do extra thing to protect or fix vulnerable traits.

I think Eric was born near a rift, he's always so dam close to the mark... Mind you I don't like how you only pick on Donna's doubts rather than her positive points such as how she calls the Doctor out on his actions. You know how she instantly questioned the Ood's role. The Doctor doesn't, it's only after Donna does he's like "oh yeah...that's a thing I should probably look into". I mean he says he was busy but he has a time machine. Afterwards he and Rose could have searched out the rest of the Ood seen what their deal was but they didn't. Honestly I just think he didn't see the problem, he's lived so long it's just another one of those things. That's why Donna is so good for him and I just love her. They did it last episode in Pompeii where they ignore how with out her the Doctor wouldn't have saved that family, or the strength of character it took to push that leaver with him when she could have left it too the Doctor. Hell the Doctor was hesitating, he might not have done it like 9 with the Daleks where he chose coward.She supported him and helped him do what must be done. Sorry for the rant I know, it's just I know they say they like her but it doesn't come across that way, plus I'm biased because I love Donna hence the big wall of text.

Shane; evolution isn't goal oriented. There does not need to be a strong or clear pressure on a species for it to develop new traits. All that's required for new traits to arise and survive is random mutation and that the new trait doesn't hinder survival in the current environment.
