"I thought it'd taste more like the gums" is referring to the UK sweet called Wine Gums that are fruit flavoured. There were always schoolyard rumors that they contained some tiny amount of wine or whatever but they don't, I think in some countries they are shaped like various alcohol bottles though, in the UK they're just random shapes and just have like "Chablis" written on them. The music that plays during the doctors funeral is one of my favourite little pieces of music they do in Doctor Who. Very haunting yet beautiful.

There's a list of episodes and watch order which shows River's timeline, once you've caught up with her I'd 100% recommend watching it. The Alex Kingston (River's actress) knew her whole story from the beginning, and it's one of the most impressive roles I've seen played.

Alex actually didnt know the whole story, at first she thought it was just a two episode arc, but in her diary everything was written down. Season 6 is when she actually knows everything before hand and it shows with how she acts it out, however she always managed to act out scenes like she actually does know, its magical.

Very true though I forget if she knew going into the scenes but the rest of the cast didn't and she had to keep it tight lipped or the diary had it all or something else, I loved seeing the interview with the book which is why I know about that part (I was late to it but eventually saw it on YT). One of these days I should go through her time but still remember the details well enough besides the mixed order but it's still good. Either way she had a great mix of scenes/hints and episodes.

He played various characters in Star Trek and Babylon 5 (and a lot of other stuff), but I remember him best as Blank Reg from the Max Headroom TV series (the sci fi one on American ABC, not the music video/talk show one from British Channel 4), and the hour long movie "Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future" the series was based on (which was confusingly produced for Channel 4 to serve as a backstory for the host of their music video/talk show program).

The diner in the episode was "Eddie's Diner" (gone now 😭) it was literally down the road from what would soon be the future home of DW, Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff Bay (at this point DW's home since 2005 was Upper Boat Studios) It had loads of photos on the walls from filming. We had 🍔 & shakes while visiting The Doctor Who Experience & combining it with a TARDIS set tour (Honestly being on the actual TARDIS set was magical 🥰 ) Years later we returned while having a brief trip to 🇦🇺 in Cardiff Bay & had carrot cake & a coffee but that's way in your future 😉

What a fun but confusing way to kick off season 6! Those creatures are so creepy! But such a kool concept in that you forget about them as soon as you can't see them. I've always thought their design was based on the Roswell autopsy of the supposed alien that crashed there. To answer your question about the Doctor thinking wine would taste like the gums. He's referring to sweets in the UK called Wine Gums. They're not too dissimilar to jelly babies in texture, taste etc. From what I understand, they got their name because back in the day they were made using different wines. However that is definitely not the case today 💚

Wine gums were never made with wine. The manufacturer, as was common at the time, was a Quaker and would not have condoned alcohol - I believe the idea that these were an "acceptable" alternative to actual wine.

Fun fact, you said about having the doctor regenerating ep1 was almost the plan for s5. Tennant wasn't sure about leaving, and Moffat wrote s5 to have Tennant as the doctor. It would have started with him crashing into young Amelia's house and starting to regenerate, with the whole series as a flashback to how he got there. I guess the actual regeneration would be the finale still, but would have started in ep1

I suspect that many who say they H8 him are those who have a very hard time with jigsaw puzzles. That is how he likes to write his stories: Like tossing random pieces of a puzzle at you which did not necessarily interlock, until he tossed more pieces at you later on. Then, when all the pieces were finally served and assembled, you'd be like, "Oh, *THAT'S* what it's supposed to be!!" Personally, I liked the way he steered "Who" in a direction it always hinted at but never before jumped all the way in. Nobody ever dared to take temporal paradoxes to the extent he did.

Actually the first regeneration, back in the 60s from William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton was the second story of series 4 I believe, the regeneration of Peter Davidson to Colin Baker was the penultimate episode of that season and then his regeneration into Sylvester McCoy occured right at the start of that season (because having Sacked him, the BBC couldn't convince Colin Baker to come back for a regeneration episode, since it'd mean that, on paper, he would still be under contract with Doctor Who and thus unavailable for other work) and of course in the TV movie, we started with Mccoy and then regenerated into Paul McGann. Also, the show, or at least certain characters, judge the Doctor in this episode for the arrangement with his companions encountering his younger self just after witnessing his death, I see that as an extnesion of the paradox trap they are caught in here; the Doctor we will be following here recieves a letter summoning him to a diner in Utah, where he discovers the Ponds and River, who unbeknownst ot him at the time (that's not a spoiler, it's made clear in this episode that future Doctor knows what was going to happen on that beach) so, 200 years later, he has to send the letters, because he already recieved one of them.

This is the first split season broadcast wise. Spring 2011 and Fall 2011. (One can more easily put in filler audios, books and comics when there are more gaps.) Series 6 premiered in New York City April 2011. I saw it in a theater. It was my very first trip to NYC and the upper east part of the US ever. It was most fun seeing this in a crowd. (The character who appears as a senior version of Canton plays a soul hunter in Babylon 5, a being that seeks anyone who is about to die. I thought that was the most interesting thing to see come for the Doctor!)

Fun fact about what you say towards the end on beginning-of-season regeneration: That was Moffat's original plan for when he hoped to have David Tennant stay for series 5: open with a crash-landing tardis and a regeneration into 11th doctor, and then the rest of the series would be "catching up" to that point still with the 10th. This plan sort-of evolved into how this series opens, so it's interesting you arrived at the same idea in the opposite direction :D

I think the red and blue bowties are inspired by classical physics. Stars that are moving away from us appear slightly more red, and stars that are moving towards us appear slightly more blue - these effects are called redshift and blue shift, and are caused by the light coming to us either being slightly 'compressed' or 'stretched' (longer or shorter wavelengths, caused by relative velocities to each other).

It's been appearing at the beginning of every episode, at least of the Smith era, since Who moved to Disney plus. I'm guessing the bigwigs at Disney, so noted for their sound decision making with long establish properties, decided those tuning in for the first time needed some background information to help make sense of the show. Bearing in mind this is the same mindset that saw Police Squad (in color) cancelled after six episodes because, "the viewer has to pay too much attention."

But before Fox took up the mantle in the 2000s, ABC was the champion of picking up unusual and interesting shows then getting cold feet and cancelling them before they could find an audience.

I often find I’m paying attention to actors on screen who aren’t the current focus of attention in order to see if they’re reacting to what’s going on in a scene. It didn’t make the edit, but the in the shot @8:55, as soon as Eleven turns away, River lets go some of the emotion she was holding back whilst he was interrogating her. It’s a bit more obvious than what I usually look for, but it’s a lovely character moment for her and I very much appreciate that it’s there.

You have to love how they left it to the Roman to come up with the idea of giving the Doctor a Viking funeral. :D There was a time this episode was the closest fans of the three hottest IPs could get to their dream episode, a cross over of Doctor Who, Supernatural (of which Mark Sheppard was a star), and Sherlock (the one with Benedict and Martin.) SuperWhoLock was even a trending hashtag at one point, if memory serves, though of course the chances of it happening were mathematically negligible. The Supernatural episode that crossed over with Scooby Doo was fun though.

I know I've said this more than once before, and it warrants saying again: Jules's perception is lovably amazing. Yes, this story is chock-full of questions and confusing scenarios-again, typical of Moffat. That could be part of why some fans didn't like him; I'm not in that crowd. I liked the way he wrote things to look on the surface as irreconcilable conflicts, only to see later on that everything tied in together, nothing irreconcilable. That's the closest to a spoiler I dare give about Season 6...well, that and a reminder to keep past seasons in mind, which Jules does quite well. Yes, those things are among the creepiest-looking monsters of new-"Who," I must say-creepy enough that I once bought a figurine of one, which I still have. I haven't forgotten it 😄. There is more to them. Okay, 'nother spoiler... Anyway, before I go too far, until next week, love!

Moffat as show-runner of BBC’s Sherlock approved his co-creator Mark Gatiss’s infamous ‘Empty Hearse’ which was the first episode to air following the hiatus between the end of series 2 and the start of series 3. This is a poor choice because this story directly calls fans stupid and in a very literal sense mentally ill for trying to figure out how Sherlock survived his fall on our own and/or for anticipating an explanation when the show returned from that hiatus, so clearly the idea that we don’t like this style of writing shared between the pair because they’re smart and we’re dumb is a terrible argument to make in his defence.

One of the best opening episodes to a new series for a few different reasons, but here's a reason that gets a bit overlooked I think. This episode has a big advantage in that all the main characters are already well known. You got the same Doctor, same companions, and River who's character is known enough at this point that she's not a complete stranger (even if you don't know the finer details). So very little time needed to introduce characters, which was something series 1, 2, 3 and 4 (sort of) of new who had to deal with. The "past = blue bowtie" thing is probably just a massive coincidence. But that said, whenever the time vortex is shown in the actual episodes (so outside of the title screen intro) it does have a blue colour for the past, and red for the future. Though this was mostly a thing during series 1-4 of new who iirc. So for example when Jack was clinging to the Tardis going to Utopia, it was red for the future. Or when Rose was sent back to her time in Parting of The Ways, it was blue for the past (and then red when she came back to the future).

Your idea about starting a new series with a regeneration, yes that has been done in Classic Who. One of the doctors regenerated in the first 5 mins, then the new actor went on from there. But i expect viewers knew there was a new actor.

This is such a great twisty episode to introduce the new season with so much going on that just hurts your head and your heart. River's speech to Rory about her relationship with the Doctor and how they're moving in different directions just kills me. And Mark Sheppherd as Canton is good value - did you recognise him from Firefly where he played Badger? He was also the pyromaniac in the X-files S1 episode 'Fire'. (BTW - just curious if you're planning to watch the next X-files season, Jules - no hassle - just thought I'd ask while it was in my head. :) Thanks as always for a great reaction - your love for this series is joyous.

Enjoy Series 6, it started out well Rory the Roman is so good not gonna lie I love how River constantly breaks out to see the Doctor. Jules: What episode am I watching? I love how you panic thinking you are watching the wrong episode Do not worry, trust the process. It's normal to be confused but I promise you the story (especially for this series) is amazing. Hello new creepy monster. Thank you Steven Moffat yet again. River: My Doctor and he won't have the faintest idea who I am and I think it's going to kill me This hurts because it does in a sense kill her (Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead). Series 6 is my favourite series (so many good episodes).

I was waiting for the confusion, Jules, 💜 and was not disappointed. The scene, at 5:40, I have always liked here, everyone standing, in a ragged column, stretching down the sand to water’s edge, with the boat in the background against the darkening sky. 🥲 Your observation, at 9:12, is also one of the reasons Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor, amongst the new series. It makes it hard to imagine any other actor in the role, at this time. The same, I guess, can be said of Amy, and Rory. As the characters grow, it is difficult to imagine anyone doing it better. But, the idea to create the role of River Song, and select Alex Kingston to play the part, was, and is, brilliant I love her every appearance. 🥰 River “saving” the Doctor, correcting the stealth settings of the TARDIS, and, of course, the big one, “They’re Americans!!!”, very funny, and accurate, as well. 🤭 You, having such a grand time, in the midst of confusion, reacting wonderfully, laughing, at the bits at 8:00, and then again, at 11:33 … well, it is always fantastic to see you having such fun in your first time view. 🤣😂🤣 I thought you would find the aliens “ … honestly terrifying.”, but, not to worry, they don’t seem to leave a lasting effect ... sorry 🙄 Great episode, for the series 6 opener, again, chock full of action, different emotions, and directions, all coming at you at once. Hello Tom 🐱💜 this was such a wonderful season opener! Intrigue, mystery, death, shock, surprise... It has it all 🙀 I have to admit... Matt is creeping in to be my favourite Doctor as well. I'm SORRY, Mr Tennant 😭😭 I feel bad! Maybe I can love them all equally. It doesn't work with my cats - but maybe it will with Doctors 😜 The aliens were hideous. Anything with scary mouths or eyes and that's a NOPE from me. I don't deal well with horror, and admittedly, what we've seen on Doctor Who has been quite mild but still more than enough for me! Thank you for enjoying this one with me, dear Tom. It's been a pretty hectic day, but on the home stretch now. Almost Friday. Almost Saturday. Ah this series, filled with a lot of interesting little details. River, the focus on the USA a bit but they also do the intro things every time it does get annoying but easy enough to skip. The Doctor hates himself and also puts the 1st letter for himself as trusts himself. XD Yep age, younger version of himself that hasn't encounter that yet. Yep younger self, he knew he couldn't escape this so used his younger self, but of course spoilers can't say more. It is a pretty interesting mix of twists and turns. Never done rewatches of them like others have but I still remember it well enough because it's so good. :) He only has companions to look smart in front of others, sigh of course. XD A lot of fair jokes/lines I forget about. Not into all episodes but the key ones are really good. When River can fly the tardis why else wouldn't she mess with him, :) Ah yes the reused set from The Lodger indeed. Ah yes River saying so much but so little. We know her end but not enough about her past at all but do little bits as her appearances happen. Yeah the sickness hmm. I also forgot the forgetting but not in the same way as the Beast Below I guess? Yeah being at opposite sides is a very great use of character dynamics, fits the time travel aspects of the show, keeps the intrigue, keeps the romanticism going. I mean we got Jack and his reveal. So whatever they do with River (which I think is absolutely great, some parts are easy enough to predict and make sense due to how characters (won't say which) act, but the major detail is like wow you don't expect it, but it's very memorable that's for sure). It hits just as much as Captain Jack's reveal then you go to prior episodes and go wow that's that, huh. Same would be the case here for River. Not saying when, not saying how because of course spoilers. But it lands well I think when it does. It's a great mystery/intrigue to watch/rewatch for sure. I think at least. it is confusing but eventually it makes sense and it's worth the journey when it does. :) Yeah the astronaut hmm..... How she gets in the spacesuit, too much else to not say/spoil of course. What a great theory you have, a weird one, but I mean it fits in line with the show, the companions are still going in this series so I mean, anything is possible to happen and that's a plausible one. Yeah not sure if they have, would be interesting but I can see why they wouldn't due to how they want to carry things or give the cast enough episodes for the role that and the doing signings and other events as the doctor actor has to be in other things of course not just recorded episodes for the show so due to having to word around a bunch of things it would probably throw things off I think to change them that late. Just a thought, no idea if would. I get why as they do at the end of a season as it's a big deal change, very finale type stuff to get people to watch, but then again we got the S4 special so anything is possible I guess. That and the new doctor xmas episode to tease us as well. XD Yep after regeneration period he dies after that 2nd shot. The old man being well.... ah Delaware (however spelt), that detail. The use of the street signs the girl is at is interesting. Cowboy hats are cool. Who the Astronaut was hmmmmm..... Yeah you have to wait to find out about that,..... It's exciting when we do see. After the past/present craziness of S5's finale yeah it gets even crazier. The Silence/Silent? You see them, then forget...... Hmm. Lot of interesting stuff to see for sure.

My first episode of Doctor Who was "The Eleventh Hour" but the season had already concluded. After my friend showed it to me I went and power watched all of NuWho and I got to see this episode when it premiered. Its such a good episode starter. Not my fav but up there

The Doctor thought wine would taste more like "...the gums" as in Wine Gums (sort of fruit flavoured gelatine sweets - one of their key qualities being, they don't really taste like wine :). Guessing they haven't caught on in Oz (next you'll be telling us you don't have Jammie Dodgers either :). Good series opener this one: funny lines, lots of great moments with River and 11, sets up the arc, bit of timey-wimey, decent cliffhanger etc. - lots of plates, kept spinning to great effect IMO.

Alex really slapped Matt in that scene. Is shock reaction was real because he thought she was going to fake slap him 😂 Also the plot isn’t saving him. They said that earlier. Also notice how River was number 2. So if the Doctor was number 1 because that is who he trusts, then he trusts River a lot.

It's weird to hear Mark Shepard (Mr. Delaware) speak with an American accent and not his usual British-Cockney accent like he did in "Firefly". He also was in a number of episodes of the tv series "Levarege". With the usual timey-whimey confusion, try not to over-think some of the story lines and just go with it.
