@@archive9796 Rory remembers his time before the reboot of the universe. He mentions it numerous times throughout series 6. I don't think he knows much about the Daleks apart from the one he encountered in the old timeline, and given he was in the middle of a decrepit junkyard of Daleks, he could've assumed they were harmless. Another reason is that it's just a continuity error and the writers forgot that Rory had already encountered the Daleks.

One of the things I like about Moffat's writing is he openly tells or shows you the plot twist before the plot even twists. He just hides it in plain sight to rob a quote from the last episode of series 6. He does it in Sherlock too....sneaky or rather, not so sneaky bugger. This episode keeps hinting at eggs, eggsterminate etc and yet Oswin being a Dalek still comes as a surprise.

But if the crew/corpses of the Starship Alaska were turned into Dalek puppets how were they able to do a full-scale conversion on Clara? Also, when you hear her on the intercom, post conversion, she still retains her human voice. Unless it's scripted for atmospheric effect how's that even happened?

I think some plot elements, eg the divorce, are there to show that the Doctor's timeline doesn't directly match Earth's timeline - he's possibly been away travelling through time alone, while events back on Earth have progressed without him. So often in the show it can seem like the companions' timelines are perfectly synced with the Doctor's, but writing little reminders into the plot make it less jarring when an episode relies on things being out of sync, or if later on they want to refer to something that happened 'while he was travelling alone' or even just so there are gaps in the continuity for the audiobooks to exist within. I always just assumed it was a timey-wimey thing like that, one way or another.

James Thompson Exactly. I love it when they manage to pull it out of the bag with a fantastic Dalek episode. Fun fact: when Oswin's listing off the Daleks in intensive care as survivors (Exxilon, Kembel, Aridius, Spiridon, Vulcan), she's actually referencing planets from the classic era where the Doctor and Daleks were fighting. Now, why they have the modern design instead of the old gray/silver ones is beyond me, as is the whole Amy/Rory divorce thing. It just seems so artificial, especially when, if they want the experience of knowing and raising a baby, there's this thing called ADOPTION!!!
@KthulhuXxx7 жыл бұрын
This episode does have some older style Daleks. In fact, it has a few specialty Daleks that have never been shown on nuWho.
@darkhumour7417 жыл бұрын
I know, I was just referencing the ones from intensive care since (being actual Daleks that encountered the classic Doctors), they should have their old casings. It wouldn't make sense for the ones who locked them up to go through the trouble of giving them new casings.
@MARYWTHER7 жыл бұрын
Adoption isn't a thing EASY to accept for couples who just discover they can't have another baby. Especially coming from an adventure that Amy puts them on (being with the Doctor). I mean?? It's not artificial to see a woman on screen, talking about her losing her baby, not being able to have children anymore, and the weight it has on her and what she feels her husband feels for her.
@bobdallas48607 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but from what I've seen from Classic Series, I don't recall any Dalek survivors from Kembel there was that Dalek at the end of the story. I don't know about the others, Vulcan did have one survivor (the Dalek at the hand of the story) and potentially another Daleks, but from Kembel is impossible.

Your rage "wtf" face in the beginning at Amy and Rory's apparent divorce was amazing. I really like this episode. Yeah, I kind of find the human/dalek puppets a bit... odd, but it doesn't detract much from the whole for me. I love the Oswin Oswald story. I remember absolutely falling in love with her when this came out, and thought it was all very tragic but also such an interesting concept. And pretty disturbing! She was there chained up for a year. Definitely one of my favorite Daleks stories in New Who. Your :O face when Oswin as a dalek was revealed was definitely me at the time as well. The Amy and Rory subplot I have mixed opinions about. I think it was thrown in a bit hastily, but I get the point of emphasizing Amy's abandonment issues and how she deals with them by pushing people away when she gets scared. It's a character exploration thing that kind of feels like it dumps you at the end of the exploration. :P But the scene with her and Rory is very emotional and I guess they just needed an extra emotional subplot outside of the Asylum story. And I love the motif of the Doctor fixing his bowtie. But HEY, first episode of s7, done! I'm really looking forward to the rest. S7 is one of those that has greatly improved on rewatch for me, so it's going to be fun to rewatch it AGAIN and see how it goes this time around. Seriously though, I've had a shitty shitty week, and I'm so glad I could watch this (I might even have stayed up a bit too late even though I have work in the morning...), because it improved my mood immensly, and had me laughing/tearing up along with you. Just a heads up about this season - they did a weird thing with it where they split the season in half due to filming schedule issues with the cast. So originally they only aired 5 episodes and then stopped for the year to finish filming Season 7, aired the next Christmas Special, and didn't air episodes 6-13 until the next spring. So after you finish Episode 5, make sure you watch the Christmas Special (it's called "The Snowmen" - no spoilers from the title, it's the only reason I'm saying it) before you move onto Episode 6! Otherwise you'll be very confused.

"Oh he's a sneaky little bitch!" Haha. I find this episode very reaction worthy and it was really cool to see what you thought of it. We got the Amy Rory reunion, Oswin the Dalek in Denial, plus the Doctor's physical and mental battle with the daleks. I wonder if the Doctor secretly doesnt like that the daleks forgot him. Does he want his enemies to remember him because of his ego? Is his pride more important to him than his safety? I think maybe he likes the attention and the strong emotions (albeit hateful emotions) they have for him. It makes him feel powerful. But with him forgotten, he is just an ordinary person to them. Very complex episode.

I'm really excited for this season!! There are plenty of good, fun episodes, even if there aren't many great ones. This was a pretty good start and although I've never found the Daleks to be intimidating or terrifying, I thought the asylum was a perfect environment for making these Daleks seem at least a bit disturbing. While I really liked this episode, it would be better to explore in more depth how Amy's abandonment issues are affecting her relationship with Rory at this point. Their pain for not being there as parents to Melody would've been fascinating to examine, had there been enough time to do it justice. These emotions are too complex for this episode though (perhaps for this show). Nevertheless it was still touching. I'm always for Amy, never against her. Aww, Oswin Oswald. You will be missed. I'm so glad you love this "sneaky little bitch" Doctor!! Thank you so much for a wonderful reaction!. Take care!!

Great reaction... yes, Jenna Coleman had been relieved as a new companion prior to this episode being broadcast - it was deliberate so that we'd recognise her when she appeared in this episode. As to why, how etc... that's a very long story and one to look forward to. Glad you recognised her, otherwise the reveal in this episode wouldn't have worked as well.

No, no, waiting outside a box 2000 years is definitely something compared to feeling bad for not being able to have kids. Seriously if she wasn’t as aggressive toward Rory I would have been more forgiving. She lost me at the slap and telling him his wait didn’t mean anything.

I thought the picture froze in the first minute. I was trying to fix it.

A lot of people didn't like that episodes, But I did. The one thing that I would've done differently is that I think it would've been stronger if Amy was unwilling rather than unable to have children. I think it would've been good to address the trauma of losing the opportunity of raising River and maybe the fear that her next child might be kidnapped again. As a writer, I think that's much more interesting, character-wise. But besides that, great episode,

I loved this episode. Since Jess mentioned Jenna is a future companion... I remember when I watched this when it originally aired and Jenna showed up as Oswin, I thought they were bringing the new companion on board earlier than they had announced and worried the whole episode that Amy was going to die. Oswin being a Dalek was completely shocking....didn't guess it for a second!

Love this episode, even with its problems, and even if I'm not as big a fan of the seventh series as a whole. I find the whole Amy/Rory split thing just struggles tor really work... it's a big deal, yet is the b-plot to a bigger story and both introduced and wrapped up within 45 minutes. It just seemed largely pointless... and the dialogue so clunky and unnatural (as if you'd reach the brink of divorce without having these sorts of discussions before it reached anything close to that). It has an issue I think quite a fair few episodes from Series 7 suffer from, but I'll say no more on that. The episode is saved by Oswin being an awesome character anyway, and also by being a decent Dalek story (I didn't think much of the Churchill one in Series 5, so you have to go back as far as Series 4 before they last had a decent appearance for me, and in real time that was a gap of over four years).
