This is the start of (imo) the greatest era of Doctor Who. The Doctor got past his hangup of trying to pretend Clara doesn't mean everything to him, and Clara got past her hangup of him not being Eleven anymore (also no Danny as Eric says haha). That final scene where he begs her to rejoin him, she takes his hand and kisses him on the cheek, and they gleefully run out together is SO great. I don't care what anyone says, the writing in this episode and series 9 was the high of Moffat's career, not his low.

Capaldi's era as a whole is my all-time favorite period of Doctor Who. He's by far the best person to have played the role, Clara is my favorite companion with a wonderful dynamic in series 8 and 9, and I really feel that series 10 rose the bar for quality writing when I thought it couldn't get higher.

Both Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat were very wary bout Coleman leaving so they both used the opportunity of series 8 world tour to try and convince her to stay, Jenna in an interview said they both sat her down and started pitching their ideas about series 9 and why she should stay and during this discussion Steven Moffat fell asleep. I would have loved it if I had witnessed that discussion. xD

I've definitely come around on Clara a fair bit more having rewatched these episodes along with the crew. I still don't completely like how all-dominating she becomes towards the end of her run, and I'm especially not fond of how the Doctor's character is bent out of shape (in my eyes at least) to accommodate her in the upcoming season. But I've definitely come to appreciate her as a companion and a friend to the Doctor, as well as Jenna Coleman's portrayal of the pretty nuanced emotions Clara goes through. Danny... is still Danny. But at least his time on the show felt mercifully shorter this time around, I guess.

I was surprised and fooled by old Clara. I thought it was the end of that character after she made her peace with Danny. Then Santa Claus came in. Nick Frost as Santa Claus is a delight.

@@theender664 I disagree. Series 9 is very... static? Not much happens until the end, in terms of character growth, and then a lot happens at once. IMO that's part of why a lot of people didn't like Hell Bent - not because they didn't like how things ended for Clara, though that might play a part (again, full disclosure, it did for me - I've always wanted NuWho to kill off a companion for real instead of repeatedly chickening out, and was pleased when they seemed to do that in Face the Raven, so bringing her back for real, as much as it helped complete the 'Clara becomes her own Doctor' arc was a little disappointing on that front), but because her character doesn't change at all in Series 9 compared to the growth she went through in Series 8 - it's like her character growth is paused until we hit Face the Raven and can finish her 'Clara becomes the Doctor' arc. There's also the episodes with Maisie Williams - who I have nothing against, girl is a good actor - but the part they gave her is very annoying and inconsistent, and kind of cliche too (there are way too many immortal little girl stories). Particular discredit should go to The Woman Who Lived, which wastes its interesting setting on a generic, by the numbers, super obvious betrayal plotline. Again, there are some good episodes in S9, even ones I love - Under the Lake and Before the Flood are great, and I love the time travel conceit that pilots them, The Zygon Invasion/Inversion is a pretty close to perfect two parter, Sleep No More is a really good one off horror episode with a nice cinematography twist, and as we all know Heaven Sent is bloody fantastic. But, as I said, I found the series' overall arc let me down. Series 10, by contrast, has an interesting, semi-callback to Old Who conceit (The Doctor needs to stay on Earth to keep Missy locked up), which it carries through to the end as part of its themes of leaving home behind, exploration and kindness, and what that means. Its cinematography and colour palette is fascinating throughout - extra credit to the Monk Trilogy here which does a number of fun and interesting things with its variety of core conceits, including the Doctor's blindness. It has the best standalone horror episode in NuWho since Blink in Smile, and the best 'intro to new companion' episode in The Pilot since Clara's variety of introductions. Also it has John Simms best performance as the Master - I like him in the RTD run, but he's very yelly and silly and that's not who the Master should be. Simms is able to recapture some of the menace Delgado brought to the role originally. Again, there are some dud episodes - for its setting, Thin Ice somehow manages to be both incalculably dull and a rehash of both The Snowmen AND The Beast Below, and the Eaters of Light is plodding and pedestrian. But overall, for me, the highs more than make up for it - World Enough and Time and the Doctor Falls are somewhere in my top five episodes of all time, and Extremis is somewhere in the top ten or so. Feel free to explain why you like Series 9 - I am genuinely interested and would like to understand.

Where Twelve and Clara were at the beginning of Series 8 compared to the end of this story. Oof. Such good character development. I still think Twelve's run has amazing character development, probably the best in Who so far. I honestly believe the real love story of this whole series was between the 12th Doctor and Clara. Their relationship was the main crux of Series 8, showing the rise, then the fall, only to be together again by this episode. Before Danny came into her life, the Doctor was the centre of Clara's world, so when Danny entered the fray, she started moving away from the Doctor living her life on Earth, which would most likely explain a lot of the Doctor's animosity towards Danny (especially in 'The Caretaker'). Yet, Clara couldn't get away from the Doctor no matter how hard she tried, which shows that he still holds a special place in her heart. 'Last Christmas' really shows how much The Doctor genuinely cares about Clara and vice versa. Especially after Series 8 where the Doctor hid his emotions a lot, the ending showed how much both him and Clara loved each other, and this close bond will become the main crux of Series 9.

I really like this episode, and I've started to love it more and more on rewatch. It's just the right amount of scary and warm and nice. It's definitely a comfort watch episode for me. Also, I love the Doctor and Clara's interactions in it. The ending always has me get teary-eyed, as well as Capaldi riding the sleigh actually. As Eric said, it's so rare to see him that happy. I absolutely love that. Oh, and I love the parallels that Aaron mentioned between this and Time of the Doctor, with the cracker. I love how happy they are to have Clara back, and how they teared up at old Clara. The middle I am a bit back and forth on, and I don't love anyone in the supporting cast (except Santa and the elves) but it's definitely up there amongst my favourite Christmas specials. Now, it's time for s9... Oh how I've waited for this. Cue THAT NOISE.

Santa is indeed a renegade Time Lord. In fact, he is one the Time Lords are never worried about, and the very first Time Lord that travelled at the beginning, when Rassilon first ruled Gallifrey. The War Games shows the type of effect he has. Santa, Mary Poppins (the only character we will never see, and the character in the original Walt Disney film) and the Doctor are the only renegades not evil. Unlike the Doctor, he only reveals himself to good beings that are in trouble, like now. He has helped the Doctor before, when he is in trouble without realising it. All other Time Lords, he will hide from. Yes, he is the original Saint Nick in the Doctor Who universe, that inspires everyone in the world. No, he does not regenerate, because Time Lords are immortal if they do not die by fatal means. His sleigh is his TARDIS in disguise. In fact, his is a type 1 TARDIS. The reindeer are pretty much animals. His sleigh does all the work.

Nick Frost as Sassy Santa FTW! The Doctor and Santa getting on each others nerves is HI-larious! And his elves are so funny! We see Danny Pink, and it's a really sweet goodbye for him and Clara. I love that he tells her to give him five minutes of thought everyday but then to just get the hell on with her life the rest of the time. It's lovely. And the lies come out, The Doctor never found Gallifrey and Clara didn't have Danny back in her life BUT now they have each other and that's really all they both wanted anyways. They can travel the universe in the TARDIS and have fun together. I will always love the nod to Matt Smith's final episode, with the Christmas cracker and how this time it was Clara that was old and the Doctor had to help her... and I fucking adore that Clara says the only other man she was ever interested in was "impossible" (AKA The Doctor). It was interesting to hear you guys say there was nothing romantic between Twelve and Clara because it was obvious from the get go that he loved her (like really loved her) and all the grumpy 'tude was because he was worried she didn't feel the same way now that he looked older. Which brings us to my favourite quote "You never look any different to me", Twelve only sees Clara 😍 And who doesn't love the bonkers inception style nightmares and facehuggers? It was a Christmas Nightmare and it was delightful ❤

This is a good one imo . I enjoy Nick Frost as Santa and the elves though out of the “ scientists” ..the only one I liked was Shona . The interactions between 12 and Clara are highly enjoyable in this episode and even the section with Danny I enjoy ( then again ,I thought Danny was just alright ). This shows the bond between 12 and Clara really becoming stronger then ever by the end of it after its initial rough patches in S8.

Oh man, I just now realized how the end of the previous episode ties nicely into this one's Christmas theme. Clara lies about Danny, so the Doctor can go to Gallifrey. Doctor lies about Gallifrey so, Clara can go be with Danny. Intentional or not - it's a "Gift of the Magi" reference! How cool!

ive been ablee to lucid dream since i was really young, to the point where i could continue dreams the next night or even weeks later. i have a few ongoing dreams that are so much fun that have been going for years. a few survial horror ones and people in the dreams who are my friends are like "seriously, youre idea to save us through that was bullshit.... reset and do it again" and i would lol so cool that Calvin can too!

I'm glad someone noticed the filter on Clara's/Jenna's face, too! I always wondered why they did that. I don't think it was for the purpose of the episode, like to make it look like a dream sequence. Simply because they did that in a couple of episodes beforehand, for example she had a really obvious looking "filter" on her face in "In The Forest of The Night" episode that's kinda distracting. On the Bluray DVD you can actually see that she has less clear skin under those blurry parts, so I think that was the ultimate reason, which is pretty weird, since her face looked absolutely fine to me and wouldn't need a filter ever. I mean, everyone has pimples every now and then and they were barely visible even without the filter, so it's just seems unnecessary to me. They also blurred parts of her face in interviews that belong to the bonus content of the DVD... Really strange.

I love this episode. Every scene with Santa was gold. The 9th Doctor implied to Rose that he was Santa. The 11th Doctor said he was friends with Santa and his name was Jeff. I would have liked a call back to that. Shona is probably my favorite should have been a companion.

What I don’t understand is that they have established that the doctor believes in Santa back with Matt smith in dinosaurs on a space ship when he reply’s to a question “writing a letter to Santa” and he says in the far background “ I Do!”…. So why does the 13th doctor not believe in Santa ?
