Thing I love about Children in Need, is that things like this, shorts like this, the actors do it unpaid (or so I've heard) as everything made during the day, or the broadcast is donated to charity

Children in need is an annual evening-long charity telethon, including lots of sketches/skits involving current TV shows. Doctor Who getting a slot in 2005 allowed them to do Rose's reaction from disbelief to acceptance without having to slow down the Christmas special for it.

I do enjoy when Reactors catch minisodes and extras like this (speaking of which, whether you do it on the channel or not I do hope you check out that Doctor Who Weakest Link special after you're done with season 2 haha). Children in Need is indeed a regularly occurring British charity event, and all sorts of British TV shows join in the collaboration and contribute their own short episodes to help the cause.

Yes, I'm so glad you've reacted to this! I only actually watched it for the first time a few years ago. It's a great little scene that isn't necessary viewing, but it gives Ten and Rose a great first interaction. It's common for the Doctor to experience some sort of post-regenerative trauma, ranging from being passed out for long periods of time, to exhibiting erratic behaviour and experiencing confusion and memory loss. Interestingly, there have been plenty of examples of other Time Lords regenerating without incident, so it's been speculated that the typically violent nature of the Doctor's regenerations makes the process more turbulent. As for David Tennant, he wasn't exactly an unknown before this, but his career really took off after Doctor Who. Some things you might have seen him in include: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; Good Omens (probably his most-popular non-Who role); Marvel's Jessica Jones Netflix series; the British murder mystery, Broadchurch and its American remake, Gracepoint. Oh and during the pandemic, he and his friend and Good Omens co-star, Michael Sheen, did a fantastic series filmed over Zoom, called Staged. He's actually also been a massive Doctor Who fan since childhood and had a lot of minor Doctor Who roles in audio dramas before being cast as the Doctor (I just wrote an article on that very subject earlier this year). There's a famous story about how David was at a recording studio and found out that they were recording for an animated Doctor Who project in the studio next door. Being a huge Doctor Who fan, he went next door and asked if he could have a small role, so they obliged and gave him a line or two. Oh and just as an extra little titbit, he's Scottish and actually speaks with a heavy Scottish accent in real life. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the Tenth Doctor, I'm sure you'll love him in no time. 😊 Oh and if you ever want a hand in researching while steering clear of spoils, I'd be happy to help.
@julesreacts
@julesreacts Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Ashley!! It's often really hard when it comes to research because sometimes I get curious but just can't look up anything 🤣 some things that cross my mind off the top of my head is.. romance hehe. I'm curious if the Doctor has ever been in love with his companions! Rose certainly seems to like him a lot... but I don't know to what extent their relationship is. I'm just so curious hehe 😅
@ashleytuchin7693
@ashleytuchin7693 Жыл бұрын
@@julesreacts don't worry, I get it, when I first started watching Doctor Who, I spent a lot of time on Wikipedia just reading up on everything. 🤣 As for romance, traditionally there was never any romance between the Doctor and his companion. Then the Eighth Doctor kissed his companion, which caused quite the controversy back in the day. 😅 Then New Who came along and really leaned into the romance angle. I won't give anything away, but I'm sure there'll be moments down the road that'll make your heart flutter.

Your comment about needing more as soon as the credits started was how a lot of people felt. :P The Christmas Special seemed like such a long way away at the time, so we were begging for more and they gave us just a tease! Fortunately, there aren't many minisodes that you NEED to watch, so there are a few of them for each Doctor but only about 4 or 5 necessary ones over the years.

This minisode was done for Children in Need back in 2005 i believe and it was to help bridge the gap between the parting of the ways and the christmas episode while also giving you a first impression of David Tennant as the Doctor. It was a small part of the Children in Need broadcast where they would air messages and skits to help raise money for kids in Africa and the UK that needed help. 10.7 Million people tuned in for this specific segment which was a very high rating at the time

Very astute about Rose acting as a sort of audience stand-in - just as for yourself, for many viewers this would've been _their_ first regeneration too so the show does a little bit of hand-holding to help new fans over the hump. And yep, all the charity mini-sodes are about this length. (though there's a longer "non-canonical" Comic Relief charity "mini-sode" from 1999 - so when the show was still cancelled, during what fans sometimes call "the wilderness years" from 1989-2005 - that you might find a fun watch :)

William Hartnell got sick cause of his age so they wanted to keep the show going as they had more stories written so they came up with the idea for regeneration, same character different face, which makes more sense than let’s say James Bond, they would have been smart to make James Bond a code name but no it is his real name.

Rose reaction is amazing in this minisode. Throughout the first season she represents the audience, especially the new-whos who never watched the classic show, so we met the doctor for the first time through her experience, she asks the questions we wanna ask, etc. And it's the same in this minisode - for most of the viewers this was their first regeneration, so just like Rose they don't understand exactly what's going on, who's this new guys, and more importantly, 'can you change back'. The fact that Rose is "us", the viewers, is super effective here. Yeah, we will grow to love the new doctor, but at this moment in time, we miss "our" doctor and we're confused, and Billie nailed it in her performance

David Tennant is the best, as a person and an actor, he is one of my favorites. His manic twist though, that's pretty historic and canonically fitting for all of Doctor Who. And I'll leave it at that. What I like though is that you can still trace the 9th Doctor as you've said, but also shades of who the 10th Doctor is to be. It's a great transition. Interestingly, this was not David Tennant's first appearance in a Doctor Who project. He appeared in several of the Big Finish radio Doctor Who adventures playing various characters alongside classic Doctors before being cast in the TV series as the lead. Big finish was created by a group of fans in the entertainment industry in 1999 who wanted to continue the Doctor's adventures, since the original series had been canceled a decade prior. They made an arrangement with the BBC for licensing and eventually got all the surviving Doctors from the classic era back to do new adventures on audio set during their eras of the show. Their biggest coo was probably getting Paul McGann, who sadly only got a chance to play the 8th Doctor in one TV movie in 1996. So Big Finish got to give him the multitude of adventures we never got to see on screen. Of course in 2005 the BBC brought the show back to TV. But Big Finish is still out there doing radio stories set in not only the classic era, but now the new series as well. Christopher Eccleston has amazingly come back to do some new 9th Doctor stories (on audio) set prior to the 2005 "Rose" TV pilot.

David Tennant got into acting cause his dream (since he was a little kid) was playing The Doctor. Ofcourse, by the time he became a accomplished Theater actor at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Doctor Who was in a long hiatus and it was not sure if the show would ever come back. So when it did, he wanted that role so badly but it was Christopher Eccleston who got the part. Ofcourse, upon Christopher leaving, David got his chance and well, the rest is history. There are more fun facts about him in the Doctor Who universe, but all in good time, no spoilers. I love ALL my Doctors, the past ones and (for you) to come, though David managed to earn a soft spot in my (and many others) heart.

Well done. The goats were so excited to see this. They were dancing around the paddock when I told them. They are still very mad at the ducklings and snuck out, got some paint and a board. Then they painted no ducklings allow and nailed it to the gate. I'm afraid to ask how they did this. However, their excitement kept them hoping around the whole time. Thank you for keeping us all entertained. 😊 Hope you have a wonderful week. P.s.the goats say not to go see those silly fainting goats, they think they are very sus.

David tennant is such a charismatic actor and plays the doctor so well, I'm excited for you to watch one of his first lead acting roles. If you want to see more of him I could not recommend the show Good Omens enough, it's got some great comedy and adventure and he plays one of the two main leads along with Michael Sheen and the chemistry between them is OFF THE CHARTS. It's only 12 episodes and I recomend going in as blind as possible. I would adore if another reactor did season 2 which came out back in July and based on your reactions i think youd also love it 💖

The cloister bell, that started ringing as the Doctor started going manic and saying there was something wrong with the regeneration... was first heard in 1981's "Logopolis", which was the 4th Doctor's finale. It was then used quite sparingly, so whenever you heard it, you knew things were BAD! So hearing it again in this story - Wow...!

This was an awesome way to do a charity episode as well as set up a teaser for the Xmas special…. I remember the mixed fan reactions to the previous actor leaving after only one season. Some had grown to love him, even after initially not liking him in comparison to the previous doctors from the original series. Then comes David and changes everything… I’ll try not to interject some thoughts about him, because it’ll be interesting to see how you take to him as the show progresses and see how it compares and contrasts with the original run of the show… in any case have a great time watching the upcoming special and the second season!

Regeneration is an interesting concept from a philosophical standpoint in some ways. After all what makes you, well, you? Is it based on how you look and sound? Or would you say that what makes you you is instead your personality? All of your memories and experiences shaping who you are? Beacause the idea of Regeneration does somewhat focus on that. Let's say you could somehow transfer your brain and therefore all your memories and everything you have done into a new, different body. Would this new different body still be you? Or would it be someone else? Sure, it's a different body and voice and what not but.. It has all your memories. All your experiences. Everything you were just now in a new and different body. Rather like transfering all the data on a computer and all it's operating system and files onto a different computer. It's still the same softwere and data as the last computer just now on a new and different device.

I recently rewatched the 3rd Doctor’s first episode (broadcast in 1970), in which he staggers out of the TARDIS and collapses on the ground, unconscious. He later turns up in hospital, still unconscious, although he recovers to full fitness in the course of the story. Not all Doctors react like that to regeneration, but some do.

Something always seems to go wrong with regenerations. I think the 3rd, 8th, 10th, and 12th Doctors regenerated relatively smoothly (although the Doctors that came after them were also a little wonky for their first stories), but the others had pretty major problems shortly after regeneration

@@sparshjohri1109 No, as I just said, the 3rd Doctor was unconscious in hospital, and the 10th was David Tennant, just seen in this video. What I was saying was that *those* Doctors didn't appear to face many issues after regeneration other than mildly erratic behavior. Basically all the other ones did though: 2 was pretty erratic in his first story 3 was unconscious in the hospital in his first story (as you said) 5 had the whole Zero Room issue in his first story 6 tried to strangle his companion in his first story 7 and 8 both had severe memory loss in their first stories 10 had pretty major health issues in his first story (as shown in the video) 12 was much more severely disoriented than usual in his first story

All Doctors are great. The only one I liked a *_little_* less was Jodie, because she didn't command the screen as much as I feel the Doctor should. _[And, purely because this now needs to be clarified in the "Doctor Who" fandom ever since Jodie's casting was announced and the chucklefucks came out of the woodwork: no, my (relative) dislike for Jodie as the Doctor has nothing to do with sexism, or at least I think it doesn't. A lack of bigotry, or a negative in general, can be hard to prove, of course; but nevertheless the 'evidence' that I like to bring up, which is the fact that a certain other actress (with the initials JM) in Chibnall's Era captured the Doctor _*_perfectly_*_ in the short amount of screen-time we've gotten from her so far, is in my humble (and undoubtedly biased) opinion, pretty convincing in making the "Ahsim Nreiziev is not a sexist" case.]_ Of course, both Colin Baker's on-screen tenure and Paul McGann's on-screen "tenure" didn't capture the Doctor all that great either -- Colin Baker's because they leaned too much into the dickish side of the Doctor, almost making him an anti-hero; and Paul McGann's because it was far far too short to really establish McGann as our favourite Time Lord -- but Big Finish more than made up for that in their respective Audio Adventures appearances. Which is also why I am somewhat hopeful that Big Finish can redeem Jodie and the Thirteenth in the same way they did for the Sixth and the Eighth.

@@johnrob3215 I disagree that it's the cancel culture that made me feel I had to defend myself _[and after all, who'd know better the motivation of why I did something than me myself?]_ . It's more that such a large percentage of dislike/distaste/hatred for Jodie's casting came from genuinely misogynistic assholes _[I think I called them chucklefucks in my previous post]_ , many of them who were never even Whovians to begin with until a female Doctor was cast (people like Carl "Sargon of Akkad" Benjamin and Jeremy "The Quartering" Hambly spring to mind), that it has become necessary within the fandom to specify that the criticism is genuine and not bigoted fuckery (because, again, so much of what is disguised as "criticism" of Jodie is, in fact, bigoted fuckery). It's the same reason why every time I say/write something positive about Religion, I have to specify that I'm an Atheist; and every time I say/write that I'm an Atheist, I have to specify that I don't hate Religions or (generally speaking) Religious people. I hate how *_some_* Religious people *_misuse_* Religion, but that's not the fault of either the Religion itself or of the Religious people who are not insane people intent on destroying as many things, to the maximum devastation possible, in as little time as possible. Oh, and while I'm sure Whittaker was Chibnall's favourite, I doubt she was sleeping with him. In fact, doesn't that suggestion sound...... I hardly dare say it...... but just a little bit...... misogynistic? Also, I *_know FOR A FACT_* that Billie Piper wasn't sleeping with RTD, mostly on account of how RTD is pretty much The Gayest Man in Britain (which I mean as a compliment, by the way; but yeah, RTD would have 0 interest in sleeping with a woman). On a more positive note: did you know that, with Disney pouring money into _Doctor Who_ now, we more than likely will get a few spin-offs under the RTD2 Era? And these may very well include a Jo Martin-led show.

In my first watch I was not aware of this little short until I was through Season 2. So I had to go back and watch it. Without spoilers, of course, I can't imagine not having this little segment sandwiched between the two. Its not vital, but it does put a little more meat on the bone for both Rose and The Doctor. One thing to remember about Doctor Who is that its a dramatic science fiction show, but in many ways its origins are as a show for kids. RTD made it a little more adult in the relaunch, only fitting given that the Doctor Who audience that did exist was now in their 30s and 40s. Point boing, if you imagine the audience is a large portion, children, having your hero just disappear like that is potentially quite upsetting. A moment like this where everything can just stop and they can talk is very important. Doctor Who makes this a tradition each year. Like I said on a previous video they did a Doctor Who Weakest Link episode, and of course Doctor Who became a big part of "The Proms" due to its fantastic music. The show really does blossom and branch out going forward from here. RTD wasn't settling for bringing the show back, he wanted it to be "Star Wars big" and, by all accounts he succeeded.

When the doctor regenerates the new doctor always contains trace elements of the previous doctors' (yes, plural doctors) performances but, as he settles into the role and the regeneration process settles down he becomes more of his own person. This isn't just the actors settling into the role but to make it feel like the same person coming to terms with a new kind of existence that's not quite the same as before.

Yeah, every post-regeneration episode feels like it was written for the previous doctor because a lot of the mannerisms and nuances seem to be carried over. I don't know if they do that deliberately or if it's just the viewer inadvertantly making comparisons, but it's kinda nice.

Oh I don't just mean their first episode. Often it's half a season or more. To add a further twist, most of the New Who doctors seem to be copying a lot of the Old Who doctors in the correct order (if you think of David Tennant as Tom Baker's doctor, Matt Smith as Peter Davidson, Peter Capaldi as a sort of grim version of Sylvester McCoy (somehow skipping Colin Baker's doctor - or maybe Capaldi was meant to remind us of Colin Baker and Whittaker was meant to be our new McCoy). I don't know if others have noticed the similarities of the repeated ordering or if it's just my autism picking up on very small things. Personally I don't see the resemblance between Tennant 's performance and Tom Bakers but people keep saying "he's like Tom Baker's doctor" so it does fit the pattern I observed.

I don't think I really remember watching this one. I was expecting the one where David Tennant meets an earlier Doctor, but I guess that one was the comic relief episode from the following year (when people would know Tennant's doctor, and would enjoy seeing him meet another Doctor). This one is really just an extended trailer for the Christmas episode, where the new Doctor really has his first adventure.

David Tennant is probably tied with Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor) as my favorite Doctor. To be honest, that is not a radical opinion. While everyone has various thoughts on their favorite Doctor, the 4th Doctor, from the OG series and David Tennant from the reboot are the "popular" choices as favorites, but many people feel differently Tennant is a wonderful actor. He's done lots of stage work. Besides Doctor Who, I know him from the TV shows Broadchurch, Jessica Jones, Good Omens and a few other things. He also just barely missed out on playing Hannibal Lecter in the series Hannibal, but lost out to Mads Mikkelsen Later on he would gain a much deeper connection to the history of Doctor Who which I won't spoil for you
