One thing I haven't seen anyone comment on: The ep's Susan Twist appearance confirms to me that she's most likely been spread across the Doctor's path through time, in a timey-wimey way, like for example, how Clara was. Because whereas all the other appearances could just be her intentionally sneaking around, following the doctor, and hiding like the Meddling Monk, in D&B, she *is* Lindy's mother, and has presumably raised her, her entire life.
@Damon_NZ5 ай бұрын
Lindy may only be conditioned to think it's her mother. Could she have been her whole life and memories of home and family, only implanted? Consider how easily everyone is already mind-controlled anyway. It's like they live in a terrarium, perhaps a snapshot of what their world was like. She's never been hugged, they are certainly not reproducing.

People mention Clara a lot with relation to Twist. I look farther back. I think she's splintered like Scaroth of the Jagaroth. Something will happen in the finale to splinter her biodata across time or along the Doctor's biodata time line specifically. Which is certainly Clara-esque.

Face the raven seemed like a filler episode kinda until the end when Clara dies and the doctor gets taken, that’s how it happens with these episodes like the last couple mins of an episode is the connecting piece to the 2 parters. Season 5 practically every episode was connected at least at the end by seeing the crack. I’ve just watched the series so many times through that I know it’s definitely something that is done and you don’t see how they connect until the last couple mins of an episode. And then you have like an “aha” moment. Maybe it’s just me, but my interpretation of the ending was not about racism but about tribalism and, to a lesser degree, classism. This seems more in keeping with the bubble/echo chamber theme of the episode. Initially, The Doctor is very direct with Lindy and is obviously not from her bubble/tribe and is quickly rejected. In the second attempt to help Lindy, Ruby pretends to be in her tribe by telling Lindy what she wants to hear to gain her trust even though Ruby is not part of Lyndy’s specific bubble. Ricky September is not only part of her bubble, she is a massive fan girl of his, so of course she is going to trust him. It is also mentioned that Fine Time is very exclusive to young rich kids (classism). By the end, this guy from her “tribe” tells her that they can survive out in the wild. Again, it’s what she wants to hear and believe even though she can barely walk by herself, never mind trying to chew gum at the same time. Meanwhile, the Doctor is telling her the opposite, you cannot survive out there on your own. This contradicts the message from her tribe/echo chamber and is therefore rejected out of hand. He’s also not rich or as young as the Fine Time kids so he is looked down on as being lower class as well. That’s just how I saw the episode. Bringing racism into the episode at the last minute seems very out of left field. Having said all of that and going back and rewatching parts of the episode, I see why many people see the issue at the end as purely racism. Other than hair color, there is no noticeable diversity within Lindy’s bubble. Maybe the answer is all three things are going on at the same time. I always find it interesting how different people can interpret the same thing in different ways.
@scotthewitt2585 ай бұрын
She literally said she did not know The Doctor was the same person because, follow along now, "I just thought you all looked alike"..... The main message is clearly about racism.

Definitely was racism. Literally almost everyone there had blonde hair and blue eyes. Especially when it was noted that everyone was contaminated enough by his presence for them to not need his assistance
@IceMetalPunk5 ай бұрын
It was both racism and classism. Firstly, as others have pointed out, she couldn't even tell the Doctor was the same person she'd seen that morning because "I thought you just looked alike". Then there's the fact that she's far more rude to the Doctor than to Ruby, despite both being the same class of outsider. There's the "he's not as stupid as he looks" comment, implying that his appearance is enough for her to decide he's stupid. The jump to "that's voodoo" when talking about the TARDIS. Yes, they're classist. They're also very clearly racist. And in case you still need convincing... Russell himself said part of the reason he made this episode the way he did was because when Ncuti was cast, people kept asking if the Doctor will experience racism when traveling to the past. And he responded, "The past? What about right now?" So he set a story about racism in the future.

First off a salute to the longest living companion to date, William Russell. God bless you and thank you. Secondly, Susan Twist. I had this theory that Doctor Who right now is self aware its in this televised series of events, each episode seemingly a nod to a pre=existing show or genre of movie, i.e. musical, thriller, family friendly, etc. Susan Twist being in each installment as this helper, assistant. mother figure, might not be such a coincidence. What if Susan Twist's character is actually a new villain, a sort of twisted producer or director that is pulling the strings to everything going on, a la The Truman Show or Big Brother? And to that. what if she had a hand in Ruby Sunday's life, her being constructed solely to fit this arc?

I'm not sure if Susan Twist fits in quite like that, but I've been suspecting that the show is going for "it's aware it's a show" since the Devil's Chord. Notice how the Finetimer who volunteers himself to be leader at the end, Cavendish, has a surname beginnign with C and should be long dead by this point? *points* Secret villain! ...amid a whole species of overt villains!

Ricky September really confused me as a character. I thought he was so shifty, seeming almost too good to be true but what you said about him being a white version of the doctor that she accepts makes complete sense. And she still betrays him :(
@IceMetalPunk5 ай бұрын
I didn't think he was shifty at all. He was definitely the best of the Finetimers... now, had he met the Doctor in person, he may still have been a bigot like the rest of them. But he's the most likely of them *not* to be.

Not only blue and orange are contrasting colours. Blue is the most common colour for a blonde person, while orange suits Gatwa's complexion better than any other colour. Both the characters wear the best colour to suit their contrasting skin tones.

Amazing intent with contrast of her accepting white doctor on contrast with black doctor, if only people were criticizing Ncuti for his skin colour... If he only played the doctor... And if ending had more sense to it, like literally I showed it to my cousin, and even though I have spoiled him the ending earlier he didn't get what it was about because all the "clues" that lead to it rather don't contradict it but can lead to anything
@IceMetalPunk5 ай бұрын
What country are you from? Some of the obviousness comes from cultural context. (Also, people *have been* criticizing Ncuti for his skin color... a lot, sadly...)
@L0g0Z0g05 ай бұрын
@@IceMetalPunk I've seen critics on him only for him being American instead of British not for his skin, because who cares about skin color if a character is well written. Also I am from Ukraine but mostly look at English content, so I think this should be at least recognizable for me. For example yesterday I came up with two ways to make ending scene so much better 1) instead of making them racist make them realize they were wrong, say sorry to the doctor for wrongly judging him based on his skin but as a redemption rebuild society in the forest instead of easy save with doctor 2) make one actually accept to safe his/her life and have all of them disgusted by him for joining someone like that. But "You are not one of us" can relate to anything, first thought was he is not from their city, not their social class, so it could have been definitely communicated better.

Enjoyed the episode except that it never explained why these slugs were created to consume people by alphabetical order and it seemed to lack a doctor/companion opening or ending interaction in the tardis to make this episode feel cohesive...
@IceMetalPunk5 ай бұрын
Yes, it was. The Dot system created the slugs to consume people because it hated them, and being forced to watch them be vapid bigots all day every day drove it to resentment. They followed alphabetical order just because the Dots controlling them were going down their internal database of users one-by-one.

Penny Pepper-Bean, AKA Mummy, is part of the ongoing Susan Twist mystery. Names are everything in this Whoniverse. Penny is more likely than Lindy to be called Mrs Pepper-Bean. What''s funny about that? It's the name of a vegetable together with a condiment that is often used together with salt. I can't help wondering whether Susan Twist's characters are one character, admitted to the universe through 14's salt error, and trolling us, the Doctor and Ruby through time and space

In the audio description of the episode, they describe the symbol on the door that they run into as a dangerous symbol.
@VJacquette5 ай бұрын
I know that RTD said it was about racism, but 15 is also the only person over 27, so it could alternatively be interpreted as ageism. This is also the second time we've had someone named Bean recently. One of the things that bugged me about this episode is that they make such a big deal about the people leaving in the boat to make their own new world, as if it's assumed that it will fail and they will die. Yes, they were told "from Day 1" that it's dangerous out there, but w/o further info, how do we know that's true? Maybe all those little racists (ageists?) are just fine out there!
@IceMetalPunk5 ай бұрын
"Voodoo" and "you all look the same" have nothing to do with age.
@VJacquette5 ай бұрын
@@IceMetalPunk I'd forgotten about the voodoo remark, so yes. "You all look the same" could potentially apply to any category of out-group. I know it was about racism; I'm just saying that "othering" is similar regardless of category.

Ricky September was very Doctor like and he was also Ginger so is this foreshadowing a future Doctor incarnation??
@thewiseturtle5 ай бұрын
Yeah, while Sean's theory of why Ricky was so Doctor-like makes sense, I was thinking that maybe Ricky is a different time lord, perhaps. (Reflecting some theories out there that maybe the Doctor's granddaughter Susan (maybe Susan Twist, maybe Mrs. Flood, maybe someone else) is out there creating new time lords, possibly using Space Baby technology.)
