I am a massive Dr Who fan, however the first two episodes of the new series are an absolute insult to the series history. Where this goes terribly wrong, is RTD's total lack of self control, having to force stuff that doesn't work anyway, and in the process destroying whatever was good. maestro is little more, then a massively overblown pantomime dame. I am not impressed with the new episodes, it's a cringe fest. I have always loved Dr Who from when I was young and loved when it was revived with Christopher Eccleston and although some of the episodes have been a bit rubbish as we've gone along nothing has been as abysmal as the new ones. I was actually bored through some of it and usually I'm just totally focused on watching but it really is awful

When a TV show, which is supposed to be about a time-traveller, ladened with emotional baggage, trying to 'do the right thing' for the universe, alone but for their companion, who is usually with them for their own reason, is not telling the story about the Doctor, but rather about what they are and represent, when the narrative goes out of its way to point out things that have no actual relevance to the story, but are there are 'educational reminders' of how you are 'supposed' to think and feel, and when the actor is somehow more important that the character they're playing... it's no longer the same TV show. It's using the IP in name only to push idealology. There is no narrative reason to ensure we know the Doctor's sexuality. We don't need to know if someone is trans or not. We don't need to be hearing slang terms that the Doctor (who is an alien from Galifrey, and not Essex), would never use - because he has NEVER used such terms before and have absolutely no relevance to the story or character. We certainly didn't need a 'soft reboot' which this is being coined as - although given the tragic last season, that was almost always on the cards.... The only reason certain people believe change is necessary is those who believe diversity and representation is more important than the franchise - because they want to use the franchise as a platform to 'educate' viewers on how they're supposed to think and feel. And those who do not are automatically classed as racist, homophobic, bigots and whatever else they can think of. They know this because if they tried to make a spin-off show, or, a completely new IP with these characters, and similar things but without using the Doctor Who name - it would have failed utterly. And I predict this new series will fail. Utterly. But don't look at any of the mainstream critics for confirmation - because right now there is a surge of .. whatever it is right now in the critic/journalism world, which distorts reality so much it feels more like propaganda. Instead, use your brain and read/watch independent opinions. Don't trust viewing figures as they will be manipulated. (unless they ACTUALLY tell the truth - but I suspect this won't happen.)

Jesse, you were very generous. I applaud your sensitivity. I won't insult the quality of the show. It has none. I won't dismiss the ability of RTD to show-run properly. He did that before. What you need to take into account is that RTD and Gatwa together have pushed some of the most divisive and insulting promotional interviews where they are VERY clear who the audience is--children, not the adult fans. And they state the purpose is for sending a 'message' to those children. Further, they derisively categorize all criticism as a result of homophobia, bigotry, and racism. Given the fact that Ncuti Gatwa asked the audience to 'go touch grass' rather than watch the show, they don't seem overly concerned about antagonizing the fan base. They revel in it. This suggests they already know the show is a failure and they are getting the sucker punches in against the audience before they receive a blow--either to justify further financing by Disney, or to defer blame to the audience outright, rather than accept the truth. Could they have done better with more time? Possibly. But when messaging comes before story-telling, substandard output is the organic result. They have two seasons in the can right now. The question is whether Disney will opt to finance more. Given their fiscal status, I'm reluctant to assume Disney's continued support.

In my opinion, my very favourite show ended when Capaldi left. The edgy, dark, well written episodes of Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi are a thing of the past. They are trying to pander to a global audience perhaps? To find a greater audience whilst alienating (pun intended) the fans of old school Who? Saying that I do think Gatwa would make an excellent Doctor, if the scripts weren't filled with cartoon woke monsters, with annoying talking babies, silly goblin space pirate things - who are they trying to impress with this? As for the song and dance routine, a thousand times NO for me, I'm afraid. Compare these new episodes to Blink, Dalek, Army of Ghosts, Silence in the Library, The Pandorica Opens, Vincent and the Doctor - need I go on? I could list another dozen, two dozen, then remember even more. Emotive, gripping, properly thought out scripts, tender, menacing - top drawer entertainment. New stuff is formulaic Disney dollar pap.

Doctor Who was never meant to be an all singing all dancing stage musical that's based more on fantasy than science fiction but sadly that's exactly what it's become. Two out of three episodes of Gatwa's tenure have included an unnecessary and camp musical number. I like Ncuti as the Doctor, but RTD is clearly being pressurised by Disney to make the show "fun" and he's translating "fun" as being camp. Boom looks like a good episode in a similar vein to Blink, but sadly many including myself may not stick around to experience it after the garbage I've seen so far. I doubt anything can redeem Doctor Who now.

it was a sad day when i finished watching episode 3… after watching every episode since an unearthly child and being a huge fan and supporter of the show… i turned to my partner and said i think i have to stop watching dr who… i almost cried at just how horrible this new series is… the actors were ok but nothing resonated… there was no depth no suspense no coherence or energy… it was flatter than flat and personally i felt the scripts were not written by anyone who loves the show or respects it… this direction will kill the show… and you will lose your main audience… honestly it felt like an ai wrote it :(

When Eccleson stepped into the Tardis, he presented a new doctor that had a strong, fun and intelligent roll model for kids and adults alike that appealed to the majority of the viewership. Something that was lost after Capaldi and anyone with a gram of common sense knew exactly where they were going with the show after that. What a shame.

Why the hell did they think it was a good idea to do a dance number at the end of episode 2. Made what was a stupid idea totally ridiculous. So many loopholes in the story. Surely the Maestro needed to be defeated prior to the sixties, when originally appearing to restore the original history. And if no music, how come they were making bad music? The only redeeming factor was that it was not as awful a story as space babies, which was beyond comparison in its awfulness.

A teenager here. I started Doctor Who around the end of year 6 so I was around 11 and I loved it. It was mature but as you said, quirky and I loved that. It treated topics seriously that actually helped me understand more on the world. It managed to maintain diversity which is what it's trying so hard to enforce now, without trying too much. It felt natural. And there was a consistent feeling between each doctor, they were all different but you could tell they were the same person This new one feels like they took all that past then threw it out the window, making a whole new show. And like you said, the Doctor is not someone that would use slang or anything. He's old and behind on times. It's his character, like a cool grandpa. Many times in the past his companions mentioned something popular and he has no idea and I found it quite amusing time to time. There's also no sincerity in the recent episodes. Doctor Who is a show where every episode brings a new adventure. It doesn't have to have a deeper meaning or something you need to cry about. And I'm not dissing on emotional characters, it's just the new doctor cries on, well, everything. He dwells on it too long, which is not a problem, but he was not like that. The Doctor is spontaneous, moving quick, fast, suddenly. It's actually sad. I hope they can fix it in the upcoming seasons. But I can only hope I guess, because if this keeps going I would have to drop the show.

I don't like it very much. What I saw for now stories are very poor. Acting is bad, for my dw lost it's charm. Doctor is very goofy, unlikable, (yes, doctor can be like a child sometime) but this is just too much. No emotions just all time hahaha fun fun fun like kids playground. Ruby no personality whatsoever. (I can't think of anything about her and I'm trying really hard)And when it comes to serious moments...they just don't work. No build up to it. Idk, but in the first episode I was so annoyed because he kept repeating 'space babies' omg I was never that annoyed. Second episode was a little more interesting but still very mediocre. Villian was ok (good acting), score was good. The whole plot idea around Ruby that she is very important is just not very convincing for me. Will I continue to watch? Yes, out of curiosity. So yeah, conclusion it's not for larger audience but rather targeted younger group of people .

Sorry, but people used this excuse through three seasons of execrable acting on the part of Jodie Witless. Peter Capaldi had some of the worst stories in the 50 years I've been watching Dr Who but he can actually act, unlike Witless, and as a retired teacher I've seen a lot of children who were drama students and could act much better than her. It was a combination of preachy, boring stories, white man bad, and bad acting on the part of three of the four main characters (not Bradley Walsh who can act) which made me cancel my licence and stop watching after the scrapyard Dalek "special". At least I have 50 years of DVDs to enjoy.

Classic Doctor Who was my favorite television show growing up. New Who was goofy, but it had its moments of brilliance. Recent Who though is just embarrassing.
