What I love most about your reactions is the different perspective I get to see. I've come to view the show very critically, having grown up with it, and I personally didn't particularly enjoy the episode. That's why it brings me such joy to watch reactions of people that are still having a blast with the show, I am so glad that people are still having a great time watching something I care about so deeply, but just cannot seem to grip back onto.

I liked this episode but I still love seeing reactions, and Shayla’s most of all. Remember in “Meanwhile in the TARDIS 2”, where Eleven lays out why he likes having Amy as a companion? That’s her. As good as any given episode is, it’s even better getting to re-watch some highlights and share in her unmitigated joy.

In an interview recently the producer confirmed Thasmin wasn't meant to be a thing. It was created by fans during season 11, Jodie mentioned it to producers during filming of season 12, and they incorporated it into the plot as a direct result. I think that's cool. It also explains why we didn't get many Doctor and Yas moments building up to it.

@Trouble in Woodsboro I think the actors themselves started to convey it more in series 12 following fan reception. the mom comment can be interpreted in many ways one been that because yaz is so workaholic, when she suddenly brings friends home, naturally they would be curious if she seeing any of them.

As a REALLY "boring old male UK fanfart from the mid 70's" - I LOVE your reactions! I love the sheer enthusiasm you bring (even when you're not entirely 100% on board with the episode in question.) The one thing I despise in some of current Fandom is the relentless negativity. Sorry folks, I cannot be bothered with that. We need more channels like this - incisive, positive, questioning and downright entertaining!! I'm really looking forward to the new RTD era, but I've also hugely enjoyed THIS era of the series too and I'm SO onboard with the whole Doctor/Yazz relationship that it's so heartbreaking to watch...and I fear things may not turn out well! Question of the day (since Shayla didn't post one this time): Would everyone like Shayla to react to the reveal of the next Doctor when it is announced? Lord knows, I do, because this would be the first time Shayla experiences this live! I didn't see Thasmin coming until the writers made it obvious, and I didn't have my ear close enough to the ground to know how hard the two were shipped by fans ahead of time, but I love it. Loved your extended remarks on DW before and after the reaction. Jodie has "killed it" as the Doctor IMHO. She took the series through one of the darkest times our planet has seen for a while (the pandemic and other events) and I can't wait to see what she does in her final curtain call. I realize there's those who hate on Jodie/Chibnall's run, but it's Doctor Who, one of the major themes of the series is how it can change, even radically, and still be the same old, old story. Someone else will always get their turn eventually, and there are kids growing up with Jodie as their Doctor who will someday work on the show themselves. I hope I live long enough to see that era (20th Doctor?)

Hi Shayla, I've really enjoyed watching your reviews. Without giving away any spoilers, to complete your Doctor Who journey, can I recommend you react to the 'Sarah Jane Adventures' two-part stories 'The Wedding of Sarah-Jane' and 'Death of the Doctor' - plus episode 1 of Doctor Who spinoff 'Class'. I can't explain why those episodes are worth watching without giving something away, but you won't be disappointed! Re Jodi's regeneration special in the autumn, it's also a special to mark 100 years of the BBC, so I think the production team have given a much bigger budget to play with. Hopefully it will be even more epic in scale! Because of that, Chibnall was given one extra episode this year, hence the Sea Devils special. So, for the team to pull another episode together at short notice while bringing back an iconic 1970s monster - all in the middle of a pandemic - was quite some feat. ps - loved the intro by the way!

Hello there! Blimey, it's been a WHILE hasn't it? Genuinely forgot you had a Sonic! While I'm here, a little Trivia: The Sea Devils date all the way back to the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee (father of Sean Pertwee of "Gotham" fame!) and are, from what I remember, what would be called a "Cousin Species" of the Silurians, as these came from the same origin, but eveolved for life at sea! They appeared in only 5 episodes of Classic Who, one of them being the often-mocked, nearly-show-killing but morally-compelling "Warriors of the Deep" during the Fifth Doctor's (Peter Davison's) time... Personally, I kinda liked the ending to that one. Made The Doctor feel more moral than his predecessors. Except that one argument Tom Baker had with the wires. If ya'll know, ya'll know... (And can I just say I'm SO glad they got a better monster than The Myrka this time? Finally! One that makes you feel the STAKES!). *As for the Question of the Day...* Let's look at it this way: The Doctor has been in at least 6 relationships that we know of (counting Classic Who, she's been married 4 times) before Yaz, and of those 6 relationships, the only one that survived was the one who got stuck in a different dimension (AKA Rose Tyler). Since his/her 4 wives (Gallifreyan Wife, Cameca from the Classic Who story "The Aztecs", Marylin Monroe [because that's what happens when you party with 11, I guess?] and River Song) and Madame de Pompadour ended up dead, I personally don't think Yaz is gonna be happy with whatever (or more specifically Who-ever) comes next... So statistically speaking? *No. I don't think they're getting a happy ending.* Would *LOVE* to be wrong, tho! Glad to have you back for this and I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE 60th in Autumn! Be Well!

@lurker13162 жыл бұрын
22:40 - Exactly. It's really kind of a good life lesson in general. If we let the fear of endings paralyze us, we'll never enjoy the good things while they're here. It's precisely because times end that we should enjoy what we have while we have it. The things that bring us joy today might bring us pain tomorrow, but that's all the more reason to appreciate today. Or, as River once put it: "Happy ever after doesn't mean forever. It just means time." QOTD - I really don't see a happy ending as very likely. Unless Yaz can regenerate, I can't imagine things ending happily. I'm sure there will be some manner of resolution, some note of finality, but I don't really expect it to be happy in any traditional sense. Hopefully it ends with agency and a sense that Yaz enjoyed her experiences, but I can't really imagine a parting of the ways that could qualify as happy. Even River's and Rose's endings were more bittersweet than outright happy. They got their time with the Doctor, but there was that tinge of sadness to their endings. I'm preparing myself for something like that.

The difference for me with River is how they met. She had lived their whole relationship when Ten met her. He may have not known exactly who she was (I mean, she is so many things to him), but he knew enough by the end. She was proof that the thing he didn't think was possible could - and would - actually happen. He knew it would hurt, but he also knew from that last speech that his future self would care so deeply for her, so he slowly let himself fall for her over time. She also had an augmented lifespan, so extended periods of time felt different with her than it did with normal mortals. I mean, she was 200 when she finally met Twelve, and that 24-year night did nothing to age her by the time she got to the library. Thirteen has every right to be hesitant about going deep into another longterm relationship after her experiences losing loved ones over and over, including the one that lasted longest. PS - Spoilers!! Alex Kingston wrote a book about River, and she mentions Thirteen.

Hey Shayla, so happy to see you again! Great reaction, as always! You are my favourite, because it is so clear, that you just love the show and so do I. In this episode, the choreography of the sword fights might be a bit crap, but that doesn't make it a bad episode. Other tha that, there is so much to love in this one! That's how I basically feel about every episode of Doctor Who, that I watched, which makes it the best show ever to me! And if you are okay with sometimes not so great sets, sometimes a little bit of strange acting and (for the most part) none existing special effects, I highly recommend all of "classic Who"! I have so much fun watching it, because the stories quite often are really great. And it is just absolutely recognizable and undeniable Doctor Who! So if you like some more Who in your life to fill in the time until the next current episode, please give it a try! By the way: Being a German, I want to congratulate you on your pronunciation of the word "Scheiße" - 100% on point! 😀

I can't answer your question of the day because I keep watching British KZbin videos with hints and spoilers and I can no longer form an opinion which doesn't reference them. I thought this episode in general was a bit slight, plot-wise and underused the Sea Devils themselves. But it had some amazing effects, a great performance by Crystal Yu as the pirate queen and some lovely but sad/poignant Thasmin moments. Otherwise, it did feel a bit more like a filler episode than a "special" and without the relationship development I don't think it would be half as memorable. Which is a shame because the set up did have a lot of potential and some really good characters. It was getting all the elements to gel that seemed (to me) to be the problem. I just read all this back and it seems muddled but that's how I feel about it. Looking forward to the centenary/finale story though! You were right not to watch the trailer!

I understand the rationale of living in the moment, but at the same time I’m on the Doctor’s side in this one. How close he’s been with all his different companions has varied, so he’s experienced staying in the friend zone and going beyond the friend zone, and all of those eventually ended. Now she’s faced with the choice again, and she knows how happy and sad she could feel with either choice because she’s experienced both possibilities before, and she’s choosing the one with the least amount of pain. She’s still living in the moment, but she’s also considering the future as well. She’s not completely committed to either path.

Your rambling gets longer as time passes and I love it. Ok, so I just rewatched this today, and Jodie's last special will be on in about 20 minutes. I didn't like this episode, I tried, but it just didn't work for me. I think it might be that I don't enjoy episodes at sea - I didn't really rate "Curse of the Black Spot" either. The Docctor and Yas has been subtle, and I think that might be why it feels so forced to me mow - it was SO subtle before now I completely missed it lol, so my dislike of that aspect might be on me. Can''t wait to see you again in the next couple of days for the regeneration. Great sign off as usual. ;)
