I absolutely loved every time NPH went "Well that's all right then" when the Doctor tried to rationalize all the terrible things that happened to his companions over the eons. The exclamation was both wildly irreverent and deeply condemning at the same time.

My feeling is that biregeneration happened because of the Toymaker’s reality warping ability. It is a myth that came true because of it. I don’t think it can happen again Also, Ncuti Doctor says he’s after rehab, so Tennant will eventually regenerate into him after he rehabs. They are out of order. Probably merge back eventually.

RTD did say that they had plans for spin off series and stuch perhaps they have plans for Tennant to work as the scientific advisor for UNIT again on earth like the 3rd Doctor did for his run. Have his series set on earth while 15 is more in outer space.

If they were to do a spin-off that would certainly be cool. After all, Classic Who fans always say the 3rd Doctor era is so different it's kind of a niche taste. I would hope that on the main show Gatwa doesn't interact with him anymore. Now that there's two Doctors I think it's inevitable the show will revisit him again, but I hope they wait a long while. Let 14 have his happy ending and come back years down the road when this is ancient history. I do wonder what the Doc's domesticated life will be like now. After all he is just as much the legitimate Doctor as 15, so even if his Earth life keeps him from lethal adventures, he will eventually regenerate from old age. And that will be centuries, so he'll definitely outlive the Nobles. Since he is retired, I think it would be perfect if he one day regenerates into Tom Baker and becomes the Curator.

RTD gave an interview where he said something like he sees the timeline as altered where every single Doctor bi-generated so that there’s a multiverse of Doctors. This is a ridiculous method to be able to bring back old Doctors as we’ve seen an alternate Earth as well as know others exist so they could easily bring in a former Doctor from an alternate reality. He also said he’s wanted to do no-generation for years and doesn’t understand why nobody has ever written it before so he may do it again going forward.

Theory online being that he did it as a sort of real life thing. He left Who originally to care for his sick partner, I believe he died during his time away so here he got to keep David in a way and stay on as showrunner, sorta like an allegory to how he must have felt during that period. Used to be once a year they had immediate filming for the next series but with 2 series ready it allows Ncuti to do other things like theatre like he wants as well so he isn't strapped down in one show for 3 or 4 years like it used to be. He's able to do other things between filming, so the burnout will be less of an issue.

What I love about the regeneration is that it felt very Classic Who. There were no real rules for it back then. They made it up anew almost every time. The Second Doctor didn't really die; he was exiled and told he was going to get a new body. The Fourth Doctor was being tailed his final episode by The Watcher, which merged with the Doctor when he died to become the Fifth Doctor. Romana, another Time Lord that traveled with the Fourth Doctor, burned through several regenerations casually in an afternoon like she was trying on new dresses. What we think of as the "rules" for regeneration really started with the Ninth Doctor regenerating into Ten. Prior to that, they did whatever the hell they wanted. There were no real rules. So this felt very much like something Classic Who might have done, and I liked that.

RTD already confirmed this is not an isolated thing. This replaces regeneration. The Doctor essentially activated a biological switch; and he also confirmed that this rippled back through the Doctor's timestream to affect past incarnations. This was all on the iPlayer commentary track for The Giggle.

I think 15’s lines about doing rehab out of order and telling 14 that the only reason he’s “fine” is because 14 fixes himself indicate that the bi-generation was only possible because of the Toymaker’s interference. 14 will eventually regenerate into 15, and that will be after a life (however long or short) of taking it easy and trying to heal. Because the Toymaker killed 14 before his time, and because his power can make anything possible (the bi-generation myth), 15’s essence (I suppose you could call it) was basically brought forward in time to that point. So it’s still a linear regeneration cycle, 15 was just taken from 14’s actual death/regeneration in the future. This most definitely could have been explained better in the actual episode.

@@joevictor53it’s not headcanon 15 literally said “I’m ok because you fixed yourself”. The 14th Doctor is anything but fixed throughout this story which means he still has to do the healing in the future. So if 15 is all healed and happy he must be from this future where 14 has already worked it out. If 15 is from the future then he must’ve looped back to split off from 14 because that’s the only possibility. So it’s canon that he is from the future in some kind of timey wimey way.

Some have speculated that Tennants doctor could eventually become the ‘curator’ doctor that we saw in the 50th - ‘one of the old favourites’. In some ways the bi-generation is just the reverse of what happened with the 4th Doctors regeneration where he merged with a version of the doctor ‘the watcher’ to become the 5th doctor.

The Giggle was perfect. This was truly the first of these specials that felt like a celebration of 60 years of Doctor Who. I loved the framing device of John Logie Baird and the invention of television. Really reminded me of that episode from series 2 about Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. It had all these great callbacks and mentions to so many characters, most if not all of whom are no longer accessible to the Doctor like Amy and Rose Tyler. Is it wishful thinking to hope that no mention of Martha means Freema Agyeman will pop up again soon? Even though it's very clear that she wasn't mentioned because she lived a happy life and their story didn't end tragically. Neil Patrick Harris was fantastic! I loved the switching of accents. Evil camp is always fun, especially when it’s as sinister as this was. And the “Spice Up Your Life” dance sequence. I still have no idea what the hell bi-generation means. I mean we heard from all the Doctors previously in the reboot that regeneration was super dodgy but making a whole new one is not a twist I was expecting! But this establishes that in a one-on-one-hundred-million-billion-billion chance, Time Lords can reproduce asexually. However how many times can the Doctor make a copy of themselves? The end fight with the Toymaker had the frenetic pace of Ten's fight with the Sycorax way back in 2006. I loved Ncuti’s energy. He really felt like a showman, much more than the other Doctors previously. And because they said he processed his trauma, Fifteen seems like he’s going to be a Doctor who is having fun and not haunted by his dark deeds or running from something. Which is a Doctor RTD never gave himself the chance to write. It's like Fourteen was supposed to go on this journey of trauma healing and at the end regenerate into the happy and fun Fifteen but the Toymaker got in the way. And it looks like we have another RTD mystery box on our hand with The Meep’s boss still left unanswered and now the Toymaker’s “The One Who Waits.” Let’s face it, it’s probably The Meep’s boss. I love that Fourteen’s costume got split between the two so Fifteen spends the entire episode in underwear! But because he got the shows, not only does Fourteen speed the entire 3rd act barefoot and commando, which is hilarious in and of itself, Fifteen feels even more naked. Donna’s “Do you come in a range of colors” is perfect because it addresses Ncuti’s blackness without making it a big deal. _Because It’s not!_ I love that they let Ncuti keep his true accent. I love that we didn’t have to say goodbye to Tennant again. Not really. That scene of him having lunch with Donna's family, really his family, was just perfect and I'm happy that his last words are technically “I’ve never been so happy in my life." You can really hear Tennant’s Scottish accent on “wheelchair accessible.” It really feels like they are setting up a UNIT spin-off. And I am here for it! I need it to be Kate, Shirley, Mel, and the Vlinx, whatever the hell that is, and maybe Osgood (fingers crossed).

I loved that it seemed like we were getting ready to say goodbye to Tennant again, only for something to be different, and to be gifted with the delightful personality of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor, and then David Tennant's Doctor getting to be comforted by the one person who will ever truly and completely understand because it's him. I watched the episode with the captions on, and one thing I really loved and appreciated about the bi-generation scene was that after the new Doctor appeared, Tennant's captions said "Tenth Doctor," which, to me, was just saying that getting to stay with Donna and her family is what should have happened back when he was still the Tenth Doctor, and he would have if Donna had been able to stay with him. It would have helped the later Doctors by giving time to heal, but instead he was left alone and ended up going through so many other things from Matt Smith to Jodie Whittaker and is now finally getting time to heal so Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor can succeed and be in a better place going into a new era of the show.

Honestly, Neil Patrick Harris stole this episode for me, it looked like he was having so much fun doing some silly things. And also, even though he had little time on screen compared to everybody else in this special, Ncuti Gatwa is genuinely looking to be one of the most charming incarnations of The Doctor yet.

What's crazy is Ncuti could be "gone" before his first season ends. With the speed they're shooting (already finished his second) and he said something in an interview about going back to theater work in 2 or 3 years which some attributed to him doing 2 or 3 on Who which would be about average.

My guess is that the loop will close at some point. 15 said something along the lines of “yes, I’m fine because you took the time to slow down and take care of yourself.” I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe later down the line we get another special or multi-doctor story where Tennant ends up regenerating into Ncuti and it leads straight into the bigeneration. Maybe 14 even picks up the jukebox at some point and it explains why it was in the other TARDIS. I’m cautiously optimistic about this right now, but it’s a neat idea at the very least. Plus I’m glad RTD ended up giving us a multi-doctor story in the end after all.

I did think it was a bit crazy this bi-regeneration, but now I kind of like it. David Tennant doctor was the only doctor who cried not to leave, his wish finally came true. IT also reminds when his hand was cut off and it started regenerating, so this bi-regeneration does have the grounds to exist so regeneration can occur when the host splits whether it be a limb or himself it seems now.

So bigeneration: The Doctor essentially splits. Tennant's doctor stays and lives out his life and has time to process everything he has gone through, heal, and age. Then when his time has come, he dies, at which point he is transported back to that moment where the bigeneration happens and becomes Ncuti's Doctor, who has healed and processed everything, and is ready for a new era. Wibbly wobbly timey wimey

For the bigeneration, I think it's something that happened where 15 was accidentally pulled back through time to that moment and 14 will properly regenerate into him in the future. He already knew that 14 would fix himself over time and be happier, which he couldn't know unless he is still from the Doctor's future. I don't see it as a case of there being two separate Doctors now, but rather that the regeneration went wrong and instead of 14 turning into a brand new 15, it brought an older 15 back to that moment. I still think 14 will regenerate into the brand new 15 at some point, but we may or may not see it.

@33:00 they didn't mention Martha because, "This is what happened AFTER the doctor left you, Donna Noble!" The puppet show was only showcasing the companions after Donna had her memories wiped at the end of season 4. Martha Jones and Rose Tyler didn't appear in the puppet show because they came before Donna's time. The Toymaker was trying to get under Donna's skin just as much as the Doctor's by letting her know she wasn't the only companion to him, and also how he lost those companions (DR who: She died of old age. TM: Well that's just fine then!).

33:15 That is what it was. He was playing on The Doctor’s guilt. So, in the puppet show, the Toymaker was only talking about the tragedies since Donna. He didn’t mention Rose. He mentioned Amy, Clara, Bill, and The Flux (from Whitaker’s run). In the Tardis later, 15 is also only talking about tragedies, but from their whole time traveling. Since the first Doctor. He only lists tragedies. Martha left on her own and was pretty much fine. And all of Whitaker’s companions (4 total) were fine too. And, to be fair, Amy, Clara, and Bill all had tragic endings, but are all also fine in their own ways. Even River still exists. What I found odd was that the Toymaker mentioned Amy, but not Rory.

We also see her one more time that falls after the library chronologically. When she projects her consciousness in The Name of the Doctor to meet with Vastra, Jenny, Strax, and Clara. She then later follows Clara and the Doctor to Trenzalore and she and the 11th Doctor kiss. This is her consciousness projected from the library computer and linked with Clara, after she's already technically dead. So, River Song's consciousness lives on.

Plus, they suggested that they regenerate the other way to end up as Baker again. And my addition to this is, who are better suited together than an archaeologist (River Song) and a Caretaker to look after the stuff she finds (Tennant as Caretaker). We all know she saw him again as 10th Doctor was too young!

I feel like the bigeneration is the time stream trying to make up for the Toymaker's meddling. He's an extra-universal being, an intruder who just enacts his will on things in a way that doesn't even have any mechanical reasoning. His actions weren't meant to happen, and forcing the Doctor to regenerate when he wasn't otherwise destined to altered a fixed point in time. The Toymaker was too powerful for the timestream to just kick him out or send reapers after him, so it just krinkled in on itself to try and meet the Toymaker's will halfway. Bringing the next incarnation back at the exact point of regeneration to participate in the Toymaker's game, but refusing to let him kill the current one at that time. 15 says he has 14's memories and healing within himself, so 14 will live as long as he needs and eventually regenerate once he gets better, teleporting back in time when he does so.

One thing I heard Eccleston say is that after the chaos of his season he, RTD and the producers, and the BBC agreed that he was going to go but then the network and/or the producers announced his departure on their own and said as the reason that Eccleston was “tired.” Eccleston said that he was never “tired” just fed up with a lot of the day to day production bullshit that nobody was doing anything about. He said that for a previous employer to announce that he left a successful show because he was “tired” did his career some harm because people who were thinking of hiring him would have second thoughts because apparently Eccleston gets “tired.” So Eccleston’s still quite raw from all of it, and that’s fair enough. He’s been delighted to play the Doctor again for Big Finish and attend fan conventions but he’s not willing to work for the BBC or RTD and the others again.

There is a commentary episode with RTD, a producer and Tennant for this special, RTD explains a bunch of stuff in terms of storytelling without revealing too much and if you guys can get your hands on it, It's quite an interesting watch. Personally, I really don't have any big questions about the bigeneration. They had to do smth particular for this one after what happened with Tennant coming back and that was a really good way of doing it. And It brings Tennant a happy end, which he really didn't get the first time around ("I don't want to go"). It also kinda RTD way to tell us "hey, we're doing it all over again", kinda retcon thing. I'm with it 100 percent. Ncuti was on screen for a few min and he's already oozing the charm and charisma I was expecting (because of watching Sex Education, where he's defo my favourite character).

Doing Therapy In Reverse: In the TARDIS, 15 tells 14 that he [15] is fine because 14 got better; i.e., he stayed put with Donna (at least for awhile - though still carrying on having the occasional adventure: which will also explain any future absence on Earth when a catastrophe strikes and 15+ has to sort it themselves [of course, there are now three David Tenant Doctors' time streams criss-crossing all the time now, if you count the alternate universe 10]). I like the idea that 14 goes on to retire, live his life, ends up ‘the curator’ that we see during Matt smith’s special that was played by the 4th doctor. Especially works if you go back and watch that scene. The older 4th doctor eludes that he is Matt’s future not past. Idk could be a nice loop for 14 to be his own thing.
