The master was created in the very early 70s as an evil opposite to the doctor, with the 3rd doctor he appeared in loads of stories and he carried on right through the classic series, in fact a version of him was the baddie in the last ever episode of classic who before it was shelved... its never been clear what their relationship is, only that it started since they were at the academy together as boys... the 3rd doctors regeneration story was supposed to reveal he was the doctors brother and he was then going to die saving the doctor but sadly the actor, roger delgado died in a car crash abroad whilst filming so it never came to pass.... fans of classic who blew their minds when he appeared in this episode....

Check out some clips of the original master from classic who! The actor was called roger delgado, he played off against the third doctor in the early 70s

The Master is essentially the Doctor's Joker/Moriarty. The excitement in 2007 was immense.

Derek Jacobi was cast as Yana/The Master in this because, as it happens, he'd played The Master before, in a one-off attempt to revive Doctor Who as an animated web-series in 2003. While they were recording, a young actor in a neighbouring studio heard that they were recording a new version of Doctor Who and begged them to give him a role in it because he loved Doctor Who so much. They wrote in a character with a couple of lines, a lowly caretaker so the actor got his wish... Hilarious in retrospect because that actor so desperate to be in Doctor Who was David Tennant..!

Gun to my head, I call this my favourite episode of Doctor Who. I've watched it dozens of times. 45 minutes of pure thrill. Many episodes in the next season come close though ;)

The master is a classic who villain and the voice he heard in the watch talking to him was the classic master idk if it was the same actor but it was a very similar sounding one

The voice that says ‘open me you human fool’ ect was derek jacobi, but you can also hear anthony ainley’s chuckle, and a couple lines from roger delgado saying ‘destroy him’ ‘and you will give your power to me?’ Which is from The Daemons

I'll join you in wishing the Derek Jacobi had played the Master for a lot longer, especially as I am not terribly enamoured of John Sim's version (and, of course, I know the Master from Classic Who--first played, and most memorably, by the late Roger Delgado) . I remember Jacobi best for his starring role in the BBC production, 'I, Claudius' way back in 1976. If you have not seen it, I can thoroughly recommend it, if only because virtually every well known British actor of the time makes an appearance including (among many others) John Hurt, Brian Blessed, Patrick Stewart and the wonderful Sian Phillips. Notably, Jacobi plays the title character all the way from a young man through to his death as an old man of 78. The production runs to 12 x 50 minute episodes and is still in print both on DVD and Blu-ray.

That's the most excited I have ever seen you! This is one of my favorite episodes! The reveal of The Master was super exciting, especially for those of us familiar with the classic series. I was really hoping to have Derek Jacobi as The Master for a while, but... no... sadly.

I wish I could like this video a dozen times. Your reactions are fabulous, and seeing someone new to Doctor Who going through this is fantastic. Derek Jacobi played the old "Master" in this episode. He's a classical Shakespearian actor of the genre of Ian McKellan. One of the very best and didn't he do well! I have this episode and the two following on DVD as I thought they were some of the very best in the entire series. And John Simm is perfect as the regenerated Master. Ooooh, can't wait to see you reaction to the next episodes. So glad you are up and running again. x x x x

It's quite subtle but at 3:26 you can hear Gallifrey's theme (and in other scenes with the Pr. Yana and the Doctor if I remember correctly) Edit: I've just checked, you can indeed hear the theme throughout the discussion between them just before the sounds of the drums kick in at 4:30 and at 6:55 before he shows the watch

I just stumbled upon your reactions and am trying to catch up. I love your attention to clues here. You pick things up way before I did and I’d watched classic who in the 70s. This ep is just fantastic. Series three is definitely one of the strongest overall. I thought this ep was the strongest of the three part finale. Russell Davies did a great job introducing this classic doctor who villain to newcomers

It is a real shame we only got a few moments with Derek Jacobi as The Master, as you said he is a brilliant actor and his turn when he opens the watch is spinechilling. There's some audio dramas where you can listen to him perform as The Master, and there was also a short animated series before the 2005 reboot of the show where they actually cast him as The Master there too. Quickly became another form of canon as the show was rebooted shortly after but a nice nod to his role there

little info on the master (old info) was he is a time lord villain from classic doctor who times. when he was first introduced in classic who, it was said he had already used all his 13 regenerations and was on death row but throughout his time on doctor who he always managed to survive somehow many different times and "come back to life". so here we are now present time and the doctor already knew who it was when Martha told him about the watch and there could be another time lord.

Great reaction! So excited for you to watch the next 2 episodes! Shits about to go down. Your in for a crazy ride with John sims master! Quite Literally!! He's brilliant in the role 👌 If you ever want to add something new to your channel in the future, then i deffaintly suggest torchwood! Part of doctor who's expanded universe. Season 1 leads right into this episode! I just describe it as the grounded adult version of doctor who! I think that sells it enough 😂😉

Starting from Human Nature, you have entered the golden era of new Doctor Who which (in my opinion) doesn't really end until the end of series 5 - though that doesn't mean there's no other brilliant episodes after that (far from it!)

Classic Who fans were sort of expecting the Master to show up,as the first two series of the revival had reintroduced the Doctor's two other greatest foes (Daleks;Cybermen) - so it was always a matter of time before the Doctor's Time-Lord protagonist showed up. I'm not sure the introduction worked so well for new fans,as the character might be seen as coming 'out of the blue',with no proper introduction/explanation.

14:19 So here is the one thing that bothers me when I look back here: (Spoiler for those who have not seen The Sound of Drums) With Saxon already being in play in earlier episodes before the Master leaves Utopia we have a paradox. The "present" is already affected by Martha, who will tell Yana about the Fobwatch once she travels to Utopia. The has not discussed this yet but this means that them going to Utopia has to be a fixed point in time. Otherwise the chain of events should be non-deterministic and only changed after the Master leaves. That is the way time usually works in the show.
