For us Classic Who fans, the revelation that Professor Yana was the Master was absolutely HUGE! He's Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock. BTW, another Classic Who reference... one of the Doctor's (7th Doctor, Sylvester McCoy) companions, Ace, used to call the Doctor "Professor" all the time. Drove him batty with it.

You don’t watch Torchwood so you missed the Torchwood theme that played when Jack was lying dead outside the TARDIS, the little bleeps and blobs. Also the ‘this is Gallifrey’ theme plays early in this episode around Professor Yana which is cool because it’s the soundtrack essentially telling us that this is a timelord before the audience is even aware of it. Also that little kid reading the names from the register won a competition to appear in the show. It’s just a shame they literally showed us that his character had devolved and been wired up into the Toclafane sphere in two episodes time. I know you’ve seen that episode by now so it’s not a spoiler

This is the first time we've seen The Master in New Who, so you didn't miss anything. In the classic series, he was The Doctor's main nemesis since back in the 3rd Doctor's day. He was seen throughout the rest of the series (in different regenerations) and was even the baddie in the 8th Doctor TV Movie. Great video!

RTD, on the DVD commentary for this episode said that the only reason they put the Futurekind in the pre-credit sequence was that otherwise, the scene would have gone from Jack clinging to the outside of the Tardis straight to the opening credits of the Tardis without Jack clinging to the outside. He joked that when they did the 50th Anniversary edition they'd redo the credits to have Jack there as well. The Master is a Classic Who person; gives me a flicker of surprise when someone doesn't recognise the name here.
