You've probably already had this explained to you but Rassilon, the Lord President shown in this episode, is actually the founder of Time Lord civilization. He was canonically dead for the entire classic series but he was resurrected during the Time War along with the Master, who was also dead at the time. As the Time War went on, his sanity slowly degraded until he started referring to himself as a deity during a call with the Dalek Emperor. This also led him to creating the Final Sanction, his plan to end time.

18:54. Well, first of all, he was standing in the shadow so she probably didn't had a really good look at her face. And second, he won't have this face when she meets him for the first time. And also, as you said, she probably won't remember him when she sees his face when he will change. Basically, he's still a random stranger she spoke with in the street for 30 seconds. She probably won't remember him many months later.

@@CrankyGrandma this; to us and the Doctor it is one last meeting between The Doctor and his first NuWho companion, for Rose it was a breif meeting with some random drunk several months before she met her first Doctor, probably close to a year before his regeneration, most of us wouldn't remember the face of someone we'd had that kind of interaction with the day before, Rose likely completely forgot about the meeting long before the regeneration.

Regarding the plot thread at the end of “The Waters of Mars” that you noticed was dropped... that was picked up by extended media and was a sprawling cross-platform event in 2020-2021 called “Timelord Victorious,” which included novels, narrated audio books, full cast audio dramas, comic books, action figurines, escape rooms, and even an in-person theatrical experience called “Time Fracture.” David Tennant reprised his role on audio for it too. It was modeled after a similar Star Wars event from 1996 called “Shadows of the Empire,” which took place between Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi - and featured a story line that crossed over: a novel, a comic book series, a video game, a soundtrack, trading cards, role-playing games, posters, model kits, Micro Machines toys, statuettes, vinyl dolls, and a series of action figures and vehicles.

I think the Rose thing, the Doctor was supposed to be hiding in the shadows so she couldn't see his face. Fun fact: The song at the end as the Doctor regenerates is sung in latin and translates to "goodbye ten." Bit meta lol. I agree that this storyline isn't the best, but like many of the others I love the scene's between the Doctor and Wilf, the return of the Timelords (albeit a short return), and the Doctors "reward" at the end (getting to say goodbye to everyone).

I like with all the call backs in this episode because this is Russel T Davie's final hurrah as show runner of Doctor who. I do believe that Rose did forget also the fact that the Doctor was in shadow so she probably didn't get a good look at his face. also something else this is about the Time woman that appears to Wilfred. We never learn who she is however there are some theories (so do take them with a pinch of salt) but the most popular theory is that she is the Doctor's mother, another Theory says that she might be the Doctor's granddaughter Susan who is from the classic series and is actually a companion of the First Doctor. I believe the one with the women being the Doctor's mother more as Susan actually left the Tardis during the second ever Dalek story, The Dalek invasion of earth due to falling in love with a human resistance fighter over the course of the serial. However as I have read on the Tardis Wiki Susan did play a role in the Time war so the women could be an older Susan. however those are just theories and have never been confirmed.

I met RTD in 20?? at the Radiotimes TV Festival & personally asked him who the woman was to his face, he told me as a writer (as he had written it & he's said this in his book, "The Writer's Tale") it was The Doctor's mother. He phrased it like this, if you were at the end of your life who would you want to see? However he loves all the fan alternatives to who she was but for him it's mum. RTD was at the Festival to do an on stage talk about his career & to promote his adaptation of "A Midsummer Nights Dream" after the talk he surprised the organisers by staying behind & meeting all the fans who came with autographs and photos. To such an extent that Steven Moffat turned up and jokingly had a go at him for making everyone late for his panel with the 12th Doctor! I say all this because I'll never forget how RTD went above & beyond that day & can honestly say he was the nicest man I could have ever hoped to meet. RTD loves Doctor Who & loves it's fans even when he was long gone at that point.

3:33 - Ironically, Rassilon's character here is a lot closer to how the Classical Era Master (especially Roger Delgado's Master) acted than the Revival Master is. The gravitas, the low, commanding voice, the more refined manner. I personally much prefer Classical Era Master (although I do still like John Simm's protrayal), which is why I wish we'd had more of Derek Jacobi's Master on-screen. He seemed a lot closer to that character. And I agree, Timothy Dalton absolutely knocks it out of the park as Rassilon. I love him in this role. 5:42 - By my understanding, all the events of the Time War exist within the time lock. These events occurred before the Time Lords were killed on the last day of the war; this is them trying to escape before that destruction. Why their escape happened to emerge at the specific time it did, I don't know. I suppose they can only break through at the point in time when the Master realises the drums were a signal and starts cooperating.

There’s so much to say about this episode. For one, Rassilon (the time lord president) is played by Timothy Dalton aka James Bond. Another thing I’ll say is that the whole thing with Rose and The Doctor, he was in the shadows when they spoke and the chances that she would remember the face of what she assumes to be a random drunk guy from New Year’s. Regarding you getting used to Matt Smith for a period, don’t worry, it happens to everyone! Every new Doctor takes some time to get used to. One premise for this episode that I think would have worked slightly better, especially given the ending of The Waters of Mars, is The Doctor going too far, breaking the laws of time and bringing Gallifrey back himself, just because he feels like he can. Then the Master would be in the unique position of being the one trying to stop him! However, the episodes we got have some of my favourite scenes from the entire show (that scene with the Doctor and wilf talking in the spaceship, I get shivers every time wilf tells the Doctor that he doesn’t want him to die). Hoping you enjoy the Matt Smith era! It’s also a transition in terms of the showrunner, since Russell T. Davies was in charge of the first four seasons, and now Steven Moffat (writer of The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink and Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead) takes over! He’s here until the end of the Capaldi run. Anyway, enjoy!

You are gonna Love Matt ... i think so far all the actors playing the Doctor have been fab! I may not be a fan of 13s stories/era... but even she is good. I absolutely get the goosebumps... its such a beautiful ending... perfect for 10.. and this is what i wanted to say earlier... he isn't dark superman ... i think going that way for his final story wud have wrong especially for a family show... so we get an in between.. where he's not evil but he lost a sense of what it means to be the Doctor... yet is still heroic and saving the day and still funny at time's etc.. but the overall theme is that this Doctor was initially healed from the time war traumas due to Rose... but then kept suffering loss after loss... even when the world was saved... he still wud lose someone... so he was slowly breaking... to then get to water of mars where he does break and he becomes the very timelords that he had once had to stop... but ofcourse the consequences hit him quite quickly with Adelaide's su*cide.... but then he thinks this will lead to his death... so his time lord victorious switches to another bad time lord trait like the Master and Rasilon... doing what he can to survive... but then that also leads to consequences as well... cos the Ood were asking for his help...and he delayed that cos he thought he was gonna die... and that led to the master coming back and all the rest as well... so now he accepted that he is gonna die... but if he is its gonna be epic.... that fits the status of a Time lord... ofcourse along the way we still see hints of that kind Time Lord that ran away from Gallifrey for this reason whenever he's talking to wilf and reflecting on the Master and his own life choices... but he's still prepared to be either killed by the master, smashing through a glass ceiling, or by the hands of Rasilon while saving planet earth...and well time itself... But no... none of that matters... none of that makes the Doctor ... the Doctor... its the "little people" ... its the little actions... in the end his death is cos he had to save one old man... that's it... he feels angry at this cos he thought the reward will be greater... but no... this is his true reward... his friends.. that's why he then goes around doing "little" deeds for his companions (including wishing Rose happy new year and seeing the person who healed him initially)... all the master and timelords stuff is just a surface level thing... all mirroring the Doctor's enflated ego... but deeper its a story of the Doctor realising why he isn't like the other timelords and why he's the Doctor... but his vain self still doesn't go away completely especially with his last line... though that makes sense... he's finally been humbled... he doesn't want to go just yet... And David... man ... he was brilliant in every scene... i agree that scene with wilf with the gun... two old men talking.... amazingly directed and just beautiful dialogue.... u also tear up at the geoff noble scene... the fact that the money that Donna will win is a wedding present from her dad... how beautiful 😢 The music is still considered one of the best for a regeneration scene... it was played at the Doctor Who proms to all the regeneration scenes... absolutely epic... gives u goosebumps... murray gold is a genius... its okay that you didn't like the master... though its a shame as well cos he's literally the main villian of Who history beside the daleks and cybermen... so for him not to work must be annoying for u... 😅 hey ho.. i do love the master in all their forms... even the most campy ones (you need to watch the Doctor Who movie... i wud love to know your opinion on the master's clothes there 😂) Re him not being like Rasilon... well that is on purpose... cos technically the master is a renegade timelord that is rebellious like the Doctor but for evil reasons... while Rasilon is about order and formirty of the Time lords... he doesn't think hes evil like the Master who knows he is and enjoys it... Rasilon wud class himself like a god... so he definitely wud behave the way he did... all dressed up in robes and power... and yet like the master ...and well here like the Doctor... all about the survival of time lord race... (so many parallels) Re Rose... i think for her its literally some drunk man on new years day asking her what year it is.... plus he's a little hidden... barely spent 2 minutes talking to him... so isn't likely to remember...especially as he doesn't seem to be his bright cheerful self that she will get to know... so don't think it spoils anything continuity wise... but the whole era comes full circle.... a big final goodbye to not only DT... but everyone who basically worked on those 4 series's... 😢 (its all coming back now though 😂) Oh and re the Dark Doctor... i do wonder that if we didn't have specials but an actual series... i wonder if it wud have been explored further... cos having a dark Doctor for a series rather than just two episodes probably wud give it more justice ... Also initially the plan was to have one episode ... set on a spaceship where the Doctor ends up doing the same ...but instead of wilf... he ends up saving a small not so important family... so that theme of small rewards and "little people" wud have remained. Onto series 5... i do have ups and downs with it... but since the 13th Doctor era... ive come to appreciate it more.... i definitely love all leads... i hope u can avoid the thumbnails on iplayer though

Thank you for saying all that of that and explaining your POV. Everything you said makes complete sense. The Rose stuff, I definitely over reacted. Looking back on it now, it isn’t that serious, very easy to forget something like that. That’s probs an issue I have with reacting, you be getting my immediate thoughts the second the scene happens. Usually people will gather their thoughts after watching something or give it a day and then see. I’m like that with movies, I don’t like to give my immediate thoughts on movies because most of the time they change. I can be such a crybaby for fictional shit. But literally the ONLY time I ever cried for real life stuff since I became an adult was at my mother's funeral. And a bit in the aftermath as well, of course. Like, I'm still missing a bunch of memories from that time. Guess that's how my body coped. Unpleasant times. 2020... Glad my mom missed the whole covid thing of course. 😅🤭 But still... I find it weird, that I never cry for real life shit. I wonder why that is.

To be honest I always thought the way this episode is framed is supposed to imply these events occurred before they were destroyed: "He still possesses the moment, and he *will* use it to destroy Daleks and Time Lords alike" is future tense. So if the whole war is time locked, this is them trying to escape that lock at a moment before their destruction. I could be wrong, though.

The Waters of Mars ened with The Doctor realisong he had gone too far, and that the rule of Time and the Universe still apply to him, even though (as he believes at the time) he is the only one left. So he was never going to start this story with the same attitude. Both The Doctor and The Master are using names they chose for themselves, not their childhood given names. So just because The Master sounds like he should be in charge doesn't mean he was ever actually a powerful Timelord. Like The Doctor, he has spent his lives on the run from Gallifrey. They never say who the Timelady is.....but fan theory, which RTD never said was wrong or right, says it is The Doctor's mother. Rose saw him for 1 minute in the Early hours of New Years Day after having been partying the night away...he was in the shadows too......there's no way he made that much of an impression on her in that moment. Plus of course, the Doctor she met first and got to travel with for months/ years did not have DT's face....I don't think that moment is a continuity problem. I cried.....I don't mind admitting it, even after all these years. That Ood song does it every time. I'll say it now......I don't like Stephen Moffet's era as showrunner at all. I had very high hopes because of the amazing contributions he made during the RTD era. It' not Matt Smith as The Doctor, it's the direction SM goes in.... hey ho.
@HamzaReactz Жыл бұрын
Ah okay well that makes sense. The rose stuff, looking back at it the next day I was definitely over thinking 😂 regarding my thoughts about the ending of water of Mars connected to this, I meant it more as his guilt of what he caused at the end to play a bigger role. I honesty don’t know how to explain it, but I just wanted that stuff to have more of an impact for these last two episodes. As cool as it would be to see him go evil, I don’t think I would want them to do it because it will cause issues and becomes a huge risk if they make it so it’s hard to redeem the Doctor.

Weirdly Rassilon here is more like the classic Master, in the classic era Rassilon was a believer of Immortality being a curse, & was seen as a King Arthur meets George Washington figure in a best ruler of Gallifrey & a pioneer/founding Father sense (despite being a tyrant in reality, as seen here in End Of Time). Back in 2010, this two parter got some critiques. Like with Matt Smith era, there was a feeling of it being a soft reboot in the air based on news of major crew changes & obviously the new Doctor. And with the cafe scene & "I don't want to go", some felt it was giving Smith a even steeper hill to climb on top of the usual uphill battle that a new Doctor faces to win over fans. About 5 years after this aired, a comic story was released where the reader/the 3 doctors, Tennant being one of them, are shown the Doctors biggest choices (as in where they nearly went against being the Doctor). For Tennant Doctor the decision was sparing Wilf, in the unbound (Doctor Who's answer to Marvel's What If?) time, the Doctor let Wilf die, becoming a dictator, going by the Timelord Victorious for the 3rd time, who goes on to be assassinated by a Raxacoricofallapatorian using a regeneration inhibitor (meaning the Timelord Victorious/Doctor couldn't regenerate no matter how many regens they had). Apparently the scene with Luke crossing the road, was because when filming SJA, the road would be closed, and the actors wouldn't look when crossing so some parents would complain that their kids weren't looking when crossing in real life. Tbf with timeline of Rose, in the novel version of The Christmas Invasion, the Eccleston regeneration is covered, and makes note of Rose recognising Tennant Doctor at the back of her head, but faintly (in that remembering who was on a bus with you, six months ago sense).

That Time Lord that you call kool is Lord High President Rassillon. He along with Omega and the Other created the time lord society then Rassillon took control of all existence by creating new physical laws of existence and installing those laws into the fabric of reality itself. This allowed the Time Lords to be the most powerful beings in existence, even more powerful than gods, the six fold god, the Eternals and the Guardians of Time. Rassillon also was the one who limited all other Time Lords to 12 regenerations. Rassillon was at the height of time lord power, extremely blood thirsty. Any alien race that got out if line, he would erase the entire species from time (past, present and future) making it so that they never existed and all non time lords would forget that the erased race ever existed. The correct term is Temporal Dissolution. We see in this episode a re-awakened Rassillon. He was asleep for millions of years while other time lords became president. They needed him to save them during the time war because the president (and former companion of the Doctor) wasn't up to the job to save Gallifrey

i’m not the biggest fan of this story (or this era if i’m being honest), but the final like 30-40 minutes of this special with 10 and Wilf and the confrontation with the time lords is so beautifully done. I’m excited but hope Tennant and Tate’s return at the end of the year doesn’t undo how perfect this ending was for their characters. The twist with Wilf being the 4 knocks is insanely clever. The cameos really make this for me. Luke almost getting run over is an inside joke with the cast and crew because in SJA they never look when crossing the road because they obviously close the roads for filming but it sets a bad example for the audience so RTD wrote this in. Elisabeth Sladen also wasn’t even given context for the scene, she was just told to cry at David Tennant from afar which is just a testament to how great of an actress she was. I think with Rose if you go back and watch her reaction to 9s regeneration you could pretend some of the shock is that she’s seen that face before. It’s also a very small encounter so she could easily have forgotten. Not sure how I feel about Mickey and Martha randomly getting married offscreen. Rassilon (the main time lord) is sort of similar to how the Master is in the classic series (before the time war made him crazier) so you’ll probably like that version a lot more. I think everybody struggles a bit with a new era / doctor transition but Series 5 is definitely one of the best, can’t wait to see what you think :D

Definitely has its weak points but the scenes with Wilfred are amazing. I find it interesting seeing Jack post torchwood series 3, drinking the pain away and then being paired up with alonso from the titanic episode. The woman signing the books was the granddaughter of the woman the doctor fell in love with in the episode where he turned human with the watch, I’m not sure if u noticed that but the stuff she was saying referenced it and I personally didn’t notice it til my 2nd viewing of the episode years later. In terms of rose, she probably wouldn’t remember seeing the doctor’s face after experiencing all that insanity with the 9th doctor so the timelines don’t get messed up lmao. The woman the doctor saw next to President Rassilon was his mother as far as I’m aware. David Tennant is definitely the best doctor imo, he only became an actor for this role in the first place! I think his arc from the Waters of Mars carried on with his tantrum before saving wilf and then came to a close with him redeeming himself and sacrificing to save wilf, which was a great way to close it off imo. Matt smith is generally considered a close 2nd place to him so u shouldn’t have any problems enjoying him either lol. For me, Matt smith is 4th best but that doesn’t mean I don’t think he was amazing, I just think they’re all so good and I couldn’t put him over Eccleston and Capaldi.

I'm sorry you were somewhat spoiled on the 60th that would had been a huge surprise but ah well. It's not a critisism or anything like that your entitled to your opinion that's the fun of a reaction but i am curious as to why you did not like The Master in this is it his acting, the way he was written or.?..i think in my opinion The Master was better here in this story than he was in the Series 3 finale simply because he was alot more manic and scarier and funnier making everyone into him is so The Master as vanity is his weakness in Classic Who The Master wasn't always like this he was very villainy but he also had a charm as well as sinister evil which what without spoilers made Roger Delgado's version of The Master great, your saying The Master should had been out of this story i have to disagree with you because it was required to include him with the Time Lords returning and the four knocks which of course turned out to be Wilf they had to use The Master as a device because they wanted to make us think he would be the cause of the Tenth Doctor's death and it made sense to have him in it without The Master i don't think this story would have worked honestly. This will be a controversial opinion David Tennant is a great actor but i have to say he's one of my least favourite Doctors his version was far too human and ordinary and too self indulgent for my liking i don't like seeing The Doctor cry and the way he talks about regeneration is like as if he's seperated from the other Doctors well no because they're all him same man, same memories he's not dying he's regenerating from someone whose seen The Doctor regenerate nine times before the way Tennant's Doctor handled it i thought was playing it too over melo-dramatic and out of character because usually The Doctor embraces regeneration like it's a normal thing i also find it odd that when he threw himself off the ship from miles above the sky and lands through the glass ceiling and landed a big thud on the floor that should had triggered a regeneration immediately so i still find that a continuity error there as one of the Classic Doctors died from a great height from falling off a telescope as for the 60th if there's any other Doctor that deserves a come back it should be Tom Baker and the long goodbye dragged far too long he should had just said goodbye to Wilf at the wedding be on his way in the TARDIS and left showing The Doctor in the TARDIS having flashbacks of his companions then regenerated sorry for the long rant but that's just my opinion great reaction either way. Also why Rose didn't recognise The Tenth Doctor during her travels when he arrived was because he had hidden himself in the shadows so Rose didn't get a proper glimpse of him as this takes place 3 months before she met The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston). I look forward to seeing what you think of the Matt Smith era.

David Tennant returning was something I knew before I started watching DW. I think it’s actually the reason I started watching the show in the first place because there was so much buzz and hype about it online. And it made me want to check out the show. Regarding the master, it’s just as simple as I don’t find him enjoyable to watch. Nothing to do with the actor, very rarely that’s the case. I just don’t care about the character. Boy those (almost) tears! I know you don’t cry at stuff but I can see for all it’s flaws the end of the ep got ya! 🙂This is a very timey wimey episode. For the time lords death has not yet happened. They are coming from the doctors past. I have very mixed feelings about this episode. I hated the last tour as it felt like they were breaking the fourth wall…saying goodbye to Tennant, not the Doctor. Regeneration is not death, it is as Nine said a way of cheating death. Yes the physical aspect of personality can change but the doctor is still the same being. However I get that this incarnation really wanted to stay. He broke the rules to keep this face once before. I dunno. I loved part of this ep but didn’t like other bits. I loved the gallifrey stuff and the tie in to the master and doctors history, plus when you find out the lead time lord is Rassilon (from classic times, just remember the name). I loved that the master and doctor still have, in all their enmity, the dynamic of people who had been friends. And the master saved the doctor in the end (granted for selfish reasons). Sooo much here and a lot of mixed feelings from me.

Yeah i definitely can see why. Not a fan of most of it except the Doctor and Wilf stuff, the goodbye to all the companions and the regeneration scene :)

With the Rose thing, Its new year, alcohol. I doubt she'd remember a random man over by the Christmas of that year. I believe Bernett Cribbins did film scenes for the the 60th specials, they were filmed over about a year ago but i do think the gap is a little too long. Matt Smith is great. He and Tennant based their doctors on the 2nd Doctor.

Yeah I over reacted with the Rose thing. It’s a thought that came to my mind, and I say my thoughts out loud so you guys know what I’m thinking but looking back at it, yeah it’s very easy to not remember him 😂

Well, to he fair, this version of the Master is THE WORST version. All other versions are much better and in different ways, albeit with occasional episodes that sometimes make them look ridiculous, just not as ridiculous as this incarnation as a whole.
