simple, the Theme for Dr. Who from 07 onward was, for many people to "dark/evil" sounding and it put them off. Sure it's a new take on the theme but changing it to be like that was effectively a nail in the coffin so to speak.

Always loved the 1996 version. Its different to all the others, as its the only one to use the middle part of the song as start for the start of a Doctor Who song. Very dramatic start to begin Doctor Who with. Also it started to move away from electric instruments to using a orchestra in its into. Which did influenced how the new series in 2005 sounded.

Delia Derbyshire's original still stands out as the best - not just incredibly advanced for the time but also sensitive, a mix of the upbeat, sinister, mysterious and hauntingly elegiac. The latter quality, I'm coming to realise, is a quality very characteristic of the best English music. None of the other versions can match that, though some of them would be good in their own right. Too many are either gimmicky, like the 1980s versions, or overblown and cartoon-heroic. They completely lack the DD original's "fearful symmetry" (to borrow from Blake, who surely would have produced the graphics for Doctor Who's titles had he lived 180 years later!). There is a version played on church organ, which is worth listening to, but again misses something. I'd love to hear someone like Jonathan Scott play it on the great Cavaillé-Coll organ of St Sulpice - now THAT would blow your mind away! This is a tune you need to FEEL as well as hear...
