I just noticed that, judging by the position of Martha's hand and the fact that she was touching her middle finger when she was describing the phalanges... she told the woman to f*** off!

Joan is so cruel to be racist and doubtful against Martha.😠

A product of her time. She was never particularly horrible to Martha, but she made an observation which was true at the time. Martha never judged her for her way of thinking as Martha is very intelligent and knows it is silly to judge her, Martha instead proved her wrong in a respectful way

@@zakapholiac9377 This scene is such a far cry from how racism is portrayed and handled nowadays. Comparing this to "Rosa" is like night and day. In that episode, every white person was portrayed as a 1 dimensional bigot. Here, it showed that people of these times were just that: people of their times. Joan isn't a bad person. She has views that we of the modern world consider backwards but that was just how a lot of people thought back in 1913. The episode did an incredible job of showing that flawed people of the past are multilayered and aren't summed up by their shortcomings. If this episode were made today, characters like Joan and Tim would be made into idiotic racist strawmen and Martha would just be a pretentious girlboss.

@@WhovianRoxas Exactly. There were things back then that are alien to them, but seem completely normal to us. Hell, maybe in another hundred years, it'll be the same case with certain things being okay that we don't think of that way.

@@WhovianRoxascounterpoint, in America "people of the time" were creating lynch mobs to kill people for the crime of being the wrong colour. Something that a lot of people don't understand is that racism really, genuinely, actually was that bad, that prevalent, and that violent for people of those times. People were killed for loving someone of the wrong colour. That was real. That happened.
