As the hardcore Troughton fanboy that he is, Will has decided to analyse the Multi Doctor stories which feature the Second Doctor and grade how well they meet his standards. And in the midst of this, he finally gets to tackle one of his least favourite fan theories...

I can mildly tolerate season 6b after reading the terrance dicks short story ‘Save Yourself’ from the target storybook where it’s shows the second doctor awaiting his sentence where a time lord comes up to him and sends him on a mission in exchange for his and his friends freedom. But at the end of the story he has his memory of the adventure wiped before being sent on another ‘one last mission’ going in circles. I like it because it adds to the tragedy, the second doctor in all those stories was doing it in the hope of seeing his friends again with no idea that the time lords had no intention of that ever happening

If you aren't already aware (and based on the pretty knowledgeable references to EU in this video, you probably already are), Big Finish also released a completely non-6b rationalization for The Two Doctors called The Black Hole. I really dig it because it manages to feel right at home in mid Season 5, as well as being an overall better story than the one it's accommodating. It's like a creative writing assignment where the student went above and beyond the simple requirements of the prompt and made something pretty dang good.

I felt that in the Three Doctors the based of the short footage we see of the 2nd Doctor for the first time in this (which probably was new footage for this story),the future Time Lords may have taken the 2nd Doctor from the planet of the War Lords from The War Games shortly before the Time Lords of that time caught him, maybe?

While you make a lot of excellent points in this video, this is a fantastic video, I will argue one detail in support of Season 6B, in that the Doctor still has to regenerate at the end and will still loose everyone. The Time Lords have given him false hope. Obviously it’s still incredibly flawed creatively but it doesn’t undermine the ending of the War Games as much. Much like taxes Jon Pertwee is inevitable lol

I like and appreciate you covering this aspect of Classic Who about the second Doctor’s multi-Doctor appearances. It’s never established on screen, but the novels have noted that the previous incarnations forget the chance run-ins until their later years/incarnations to protect the timeline. Dodgey explanation at best. Wholeheartedly believing in 6B and seeing how the Time Lords forced the 3rd and 4th Doctors into service, I felt the Second Doctor was at the end of his incarnation while in service to the Time Lords in the Five Doctors. Even without the full 6B explanation, it seems there is a secret life of the 2nd Doctor. My point of contention (slightly) is that the second Doctor says Jamie and Zoe shouldn’t remember him. Not True. They were allowed to remember their first adventure with him. Jamie may not remember Zoe. As for the Doctor’s feelings about Androgums, I took it him meant they had an irresistible hunger for cannibalism. Eating meat was one thing- eating human beings is alarming to me. That does not fall under prejudice to me. I like the idea of the Time Lords using the second Doctor then wiping his mind of the missions. They had a CIA doing some undercover stuff.

Troughton almost didn’t want to return. It eventually worked out later on as he needed to return as the time then only 5 of his story intact. Later on, Sylvester McCoy would continue Troughton’s character.

Really good video as always Doctor’s being somewhat flanderized in multi doctor stories never really bothered me outside of twice upon a time as the actors still give a really good performance & bounce off the current doctor really well. As for the season 6B theory I completely agree with what you’re saying. I hate that the fans (despite coming up with a imaginative solution) have to fix a problem created by the writers being lazy & inserting their own interpretation that contradicts what’s come before. And the worst part is it comes from a writer who’s held in such high regard. Robert Holmes, despite writing some of the best stories & influencing some of the show’s lore & along with Hinchcliffe being behind the golden age of classic who, is not perfect like godhood status the fandom has given him over time.

To be fair, that one came about because of Jack Kirby ignoring the 1950’s era when he drew his return to the character in the Avengers and the later retcon of the other Captain America as an imposter whom took an unstable version of the Super Serum which later drove him crazy does line up with what the Super Soldier program was originally about prior to the loss of it’s key scientist. They could have ignored the era entirely like DC does but instead; they just wrote the explanation of the 1950’s CA being a fake who made himself look like the original. As far as character retcons goes, that’s one of the more simple ones believe it or not.

They tried to insert a whole series of Brutus Monty adventures after his death in Monty on the Run which is distasteful. Ruins the emotional impact of Monty’s decision to kill him. His lover. Undermines Monty’s coldness towards Grandfather Monty due to his inability to get attached to anyone after Brutus Monty betrayed him.

The Two Doctors bit about bigotry is way over analysing a very upfront 'bad guys are bad guys in adventure story' thing. There are Cybermen who are individual and good, The Doctor still assumes every one of them is awful. The Time Lords are all completely individual and yet the Doctor hears they're coming back and decides immediately to take a gun and try to stop it based only the actions of some of them. Could go looking for examples of this for ages. What actually is prejudice is the Doctor's attitude towards anyone involved with the military especially given his history with UNIT, the Brig, Liz, Jo and so on. Just saying.

Given all the differences in the biology of various species in the DWU, what's wrong with a little bit of race (or species) realism? Androgums may not be able to help the way the evolution made them creatures of pure appetitic avarice, but that doesn't make them worthy of inclusion into polite society.
